is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Luke Slater is a really great producer enjoying a well deserved renaissance. Make sure to look into his back catalogue, and the stuff on his Mote Evolver label.

He also produced one of the most beautiful Techno tracks ever put to record, in my opinion.

I remember they used to actually air the video for this one on MTV AMP (a short-lived show on US MTV in the late 90's that aired all sorts of electronic music videos):

Luke Slater - Love

Reminds me a lot of Oliver Lieb's stuff.

So, I went to that Summadayze festival (didn't wind up going to the one with Tiger & Woods) and fuck me, some great acts on.

Good:
Danny Daze
Scuba (holy crap, loved it)
Aeroplane
Booka Shade (live)

Average:
Maya Jane Coles (just kinda bleh... not great, but never really went anywhere)

Terrible:
Eddie Halliwell (ugh, that same fucking synth line that's used in all the commercial, big-room bangers. IN EVERY SINGLE TRACK.)
Junior Jack
Hudson Mohawke (I could see that whatever it is he's doing, he's good at it... I just don't get it at all)

Found out the names of some bangers of tracks, including this one I'll leave you with that I heard in a club we were at afterwards:
Bertie Blackman - Town of sorrow (Mic Newman remix)

Just had a house party and played some tunes all night for NYE!

I'd kill to be able to do that! I need to find friends who have house parties. They all either just go out for NYE or just stay home and go to sleep early.

I need new friends :(

Maya Jane strikes again.
My mates thought she did a good job, but they saw it through a slightly different (drug-tinted) lense. I mean, she did... and if I was in a bar or small club and not paying close attention it would've been quite fine. But it's not festival music at all. It's like she didn't think about the event she was playing before she played it (though there were some decent tracks in there!).

This is precisely the problem i had with her in Feb. She opened for Green Velvet at a festival in Montreal. Came on after a locals set which was uptempo techno, and played boring minimal house. Mind you this is also going to lead into Velvet and did not fit AT ALL. She had zero idea how to play to a crowd. I think she has a predetermined set and doesnt deviate in any way.

Pretty much. I mean, even watching Danny Daze play, he did a drastically different set from when I saw him play in a club a few months ago, but he didn't seem to compromise at all... just kind of changed the energy of the tracks he was playing to slightly more uptempo. It's not like he went commercial or anything.

New Year's Eve was pretty cool too, the "special" guest DJs were Kasey Taylor and Dublin Aunts. Highlight of the night was when Taylor dropped Infusion's* remix of Running Up That Hill, which surprised the shit out of me. Such an amazing track.

*Just read in the YT comments that it was a white label actually by Jamie Stevens, but going under Infusion's name. Not a massive surprise, just look at the amount of insanely good productions he's been pushing out over the last few years. 99% sure he's the brains of the operation.

I completely disagree with the notion that an artist needs to deviate from their sound in order to placate the masses at a music festival. It gives the people listening a false impression of an artist's style and can potentially alienate the fans an artist already has. People that go to music festivals are largely quite open-minded and appreciate a large variety of genres. There's no right or wrong set to play at a music festival. Earlier this year I saw Julia Holter who did a mostly downtempo ambient set followed by Cloud Nothings who were the second loudest band I've ever seen in person (A Place to Bury Strangers being first).

Ya, I'd be pissed if the artist I went to see didn't stay true. Then again, It's their prerogative to experiment with their set.

If your booked at a 2 day techno festival, im pretty sure everyone is expecting you to play techno. Your job as an opener is to lead into the main act and maintain a certain atmosphere and tempo. She failed miserably at both.

Klock and Dettmann were on the second day. She stuck out like a sore thumb. I have no idea why she was booked. I bet she said she would play techno, cause honestly thats the only explaination.

Maya Jane Coles leading into Velvet is a horrible choice. HORRIBLE.

But aren't they there to read the crowd as well? There's no point in sticking strictly to what you play if you're not playing to the people who are there. From what I could see, the majority of the crowd weren't hugely receptive compared to some of the earlier acts that were on. In that case, you absolutely should program your set so the crowd enjoys it.

You don't necessarily need to change your style, but if your field of expertise is so narrow that it doesn't lend itself to festival performances at all or meandering your set to make accommodations for the crowd, then you should either reconsider where you play or expand your toolset.

Keep in mind, this wasn't the main stage (that was reserved for Fedde Le Grand, Knife Party and a Chems DJ set) but one that was pretty liberal with the acts they had on (after MJC was a live performance from Booka Shade) so whoever's playing there doesn't need to try to appeal to a massive audience, just the ones who are already there.

Well said Shaneus.

The role of a DJ is to read the crowd and find whats working and whats not. If the crowd isnt really feeling banging techno, maybe you need to change it up. You can still spin techno, but maybe something softer or funkier. It's live set progression, and it separates the wheat from the chaff.

I like some of her trax, but she is a shit DJ.

Depends if they are playing an act as a musician or are there as a dj.

Yeah maybe I misunderstood, was she DJing or mixing her own stuff?
She only DJ's live.
I never thought she did anything live other than DJing. Obviously she spun some of her own stuff (I know of at least two or three songs over 75mins, but only what mates pointed out to me), but I'm pretty sure the majority wasn't.

It's actually a funny thing to discuss, because when I first saw Danny Daze a few months ago, he played such a deep, dark, filthy set but towards the end, played Fall Away From Love. Crowd absolutely lost their fucking minds but it could not have been more out of place and to be honest, was the only foot he put wrong during the whole thing (but I can understand why he played it). Seeing him the other day, he played it as well (I only rocked up to his stage as he was playing it) but the songs he played afterwards fitted far better than at the first gig.

Because I love you guys so much, here's what my Shazam picked up over the last few days:
The White Lamp - It's You (Ron Basejam remix
Roy Mclaren - Minor Affair (Something Good Remix)
Miguel Campbell - Rockin' Beats (I'd heard this a little while back, but Shazam'd it to make sure I remembered!)
Dublin Aunts - Heartbreak Reputation (Drop Out Orchestra Remix)
Larse - Tonite
^^^ These are all from NYE, which was a "Nu Years Eve, Nu-Disco" thing. Obviously ;)
PARIS - It's A Shifting Drifting World (It's A Fine Line Remix)
Julio Bashmore - Au Seve (one I'd heard plenty of times, but had no idea of the name)
George Fitzgerald - Every Inch (Deetron Remix)
Joy Orbison - Big Room Tech House DJ Tool (I suspect it was Scuba who played this one)
Scuba - Talk Torque (Same as above, I think)
Rhythm & Sound - Poor People Must Work (Carl Craig Remix)
Joy O & Boddika - Mercy (reminds me a LOT of the H-Man remix of Du What U Du by Yoshimoto... all of 8 years old now!)
Azari & III - Hungry for the power (Jamie Jones remix)
Marcus Marr - The Music
Roosevelt - Sea (Dub)
^^^ NYD festival
Danny Clark & Jay Benham - Wondrous (David Penn Remix)
Bertie Blackman - Town of Sorrow (Mic Newman remix) (Posted this earlier, but bears repeating. Didn't realise that both Bertie Blackman and Mic Newman are Australian. Woo!)
Betoko - Raining Again
^^^ Post-festy club, main room
Jackie Moore - This Time Baby (some of you may be familiar with it's offspring, Freemasons' Love On My Mind)
Klangkarussell - Sonnentanz (Original Mix) (amazing track... I have a feeling it was massive last year)
^^^ Post-festy club, downstairs
***FLAT BATTERY***

i dont get this stuff where is lush i need the music i know and love
If you didn't find a single song you liked in the list I posted, something's broken in your brain. Good music isn't always spoonfed, sometimes you need to click through a lot of links of stuff you might not like to discover stuff you do :)

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I'm pretty sure Deadmau5's There Might Be Coffee is definitely in my top 5 tracks for 2012. It's definitely not the best, but I think it's up there.

Here's a more complete list. No YT links yet, it's late and I'm tired:
Duke Dumont - The Giver (Original Mix)
Him Self Her - Gone Too Long
Deadmau5 - There Might Be Coffee
Jacques Greene - Tell Me

I'm a huge fan of Don't Ditch. I also like Chasing Summers and We Own the Night.

Sounds like you enjoy the anthem/big room sound. Here's some other stuff that might tickle your fancy:

Cazzette - Beam Me Up

Showtek & Justin Prime - Cannonball

Wolfgang Gartner vs Hook N Sling - Take The Redline (Evan Baker 'Central Line' Edit)

D: My computer lost my mix, so I started making a new one, a better one, but halfway through it just went to shit... I guess I shouldn't take DayQuil right as I start mixing. Realized after 40 minutes all I had done was a bunch of dub techno and some Sigha, not the most diverse mix I've ever done.

I'll be ready later today. Lezdodis.
