The Official TEKKEN 5 Thread

I know tekken is different from vf4 in that its easier to pick up and play, but it felt like I didnt even need to learn Asuka, even IF she's a great character.

Do I even want to bother learning all of Anna (and I guess Nina too)'s multi hit throws? Someone told me they are all very easy to get out of and not worth using.

Not really, no. Most can easily be escaped by alternating between pressing left or right punch.

Stick with df, df + 1. It requires a double break, it comes out fast (you can easily sneak it in between pokes), has a small break window, and it does a lot of damage. It's easily Nina and Anna's best throw. If people start to break it (which is doubtful) switch up to her 2+4 throw and immediately follow it up with 2,1,2,1,3,1.

Lei is the best Changing stances + razor rushes = infinite possibilities. He is pretty hard to really use but man its fucking fun.

anyone else feel tekken is like fighting in the matrix? the weird japanese music helps but its just the way the game flows, some of the fights are like in the movies

Not much to say but this is the game is gonna get this hardcore 2d fighter player learn how to play 3d fighters work/play. Awesome game, the arcade mode is a stroke of genius.

arcade mode is a shadow of the superior quest mode for virtua fighter, but VF4 Evo is less newbie friendly so Tekken 5 is probably a better match for you.

Break windows vary between throws?

Also, how exactly do chicken's work, same as throw breaks?

WTFF? Am I doing something wrong? I just bought Askua's extra costume but I can't use her designer outfit. I can use her school uniform (press triangle) but all of the other buttons give her the old outfits. What button (or combination of buttons?) do you have to press to use it?

Yes, some throws have larger windows than others. Actually to put it another way... with some throws you get more than 1 chance to break them. So if you don't break it during the initial grab you can break it a split second or so later.

To chicken a left punch or left kick press forward + left punch & left kick. To chicken a right punch or right kick press forward & right punch + right kick.

T5 is just so damn pretty though, and the character designs fit more to my liking then Sega's offerings. Steve is my man.. although his voice is so lame, it was better in T4 i think. IMHO every fighting game should implement a quest mode and ditch the old "arcade mode". Of course that means more arcade first titles.. which is a good thing! It slowly builds up patterns and fighting styles from the best arcade players so that the casuals have something learn from, rather then formulaic ai (cheap) patterns of yore. The whole upgrading and profiles are great too, too bad i wasn't into vf4.
I'm excited again in the fighting genre, can't what what vf5 and T6 have to offer. Sure online play, but the meat of the content imo is recording playstyles/patterns from proven players.

I heard somewhere there are weird 'rights' both namco and sega have in regards to modes in fighting games so youll never see exactly the same features in either tekken or virtua fighter.

Thanks! Couple more if you don't mind. Are all chickens timed the same? Is frame window data available somewhere on the different throw breaks?

I'm pretty sure the window for all chickens is the same. An easy way to do chickens is to buffer them. In Tekken, if you hold a button and/or a direction and then press another button its the same thing as pressing the two buttons at the same time.

For instance...pick Heihachi. Press right punch and hold it. Now while holding right punch press left punch. He will do his Dragon Breath attack (the hadouken-ish move) which is normally performed by pressing left punch & right punch at the same time. Now apply that to chickens. If you do a right punch attack and you think your opponent will reverse you, keep holidng down right punch after you press it. Then hold forward on the d-pad as well. While holding both press right kick rapidly if/when your opponent tries to reverse (or you can just rapidly press it anyway; that's what I do that way I almost never miss).

is there some special technique to blocking im not aware of, its been a while since ive played the ol T but half their shit gets through and im damned sure im blocking. Is it timing related or what.

Yes. If you just performed an attack and they blocked it then you are probably at a frame disadvantage. Basically, each move has its own recovery time before you can block. Lets say you did a move and it gives -10 frames advantage on block (therefore its a disadvantage). If the opponent does an 8 frame attack like a jab they will hit you because there are still 2 frames left before you could block. Likewise if you successfully hit your opponent you will usually gain some kind of frame advantage so you can keep attacking without fear of retaliation.

In some extremely rare cases when there is a guard stun you have to neutral block to avoid getting hit (that is, just stand there and do nothing).

Do you have to play 200 matches in Arcade mode at one time to unlock Devil Jin? Or can you play 40 or so in one session and still get 'im?

Kabuki Waq said:
are you sure you arent dashing back instead?

to block you need to hold back, cant be tapping it.

I don't think you can backdash in tekken5.. and i think it auto blocks when your stick is at neutral, but not low attacks.

It's cumulative so you can play 20 a day for 10 days and unlock him that way too. Your best bet is to set everything to 1 round with low health. The matches will end very quickly and you'll have your 200 matches in no time.

You CAN backdash. Just tap back twice. To do a low neutral guard hold down but not down-back.

Hit circle to use Asuka's 4th outfit. Are you trying to use it in practice mode or something? Because you can only use your custom stuff on the 1P side.

Yeah it was in practice mode. I'll try it again.

Edit: Weird. I tried circle and it didn't work so I rebooted the PS2 and tried it again and then it worked.

Why does Xiao Yu not have a CG ending. >:(
I was pretty suprised myself with that ending. Was Ling's ending brand new animation or ripped from scenes of the Tekken anime movie?

I think Asuka is not an "easy" character. You have to change up her moves and doing combos is not easy for me. You want to talk about easy combos? Hwoarang, Bruce, Lee, Law are your boys. Asuka is more of a power player, I think. I'm always alternating between back+X, up+O, up+X, and her jabs. Its like you gotta know when to pull em off and you can really confuse the enemy with highs, lows, etc. etc. Jin seems the same way.

Jinpachi does not usually give me much trouble. I beat him my FIRST try with Asuka. Then after that I used Jin and Kazuya and each took me like 5 tries, tops. He's cheap as hell, but if you get the opening attack on him, you can get a momentum going that he cannot stop. Its all about the momentum.

And how come nobody mentioned (lately) how AWESOME that intro CG is? It fucking rules! Except for the music. The heavy parts are really fitting, but the cornball singing is just cheesy because of the lyrics. Plus the whole "Oh no! Save the kitty!" scene is just SOOOOOO Japanese. I can't help but fuckin laugh everytime I watch it.

asuka is easy, I mean she's still cool, but what supports my theory is her insane popularity. This tends to be the case with easy characters. Dont get me wrong, she rocks, its just, other characters seem like they need more figuring out.

The music in this game is awsome, there was this one match where I did Julia's cool throw where she just mashes the persons face into the ground and they hit right when the music climaxed.

Ground Zero (version without the jinpachi tornado bullshit) is my favorite stage, cathedral is second, moonlight is third.

I really like the stage with all the red flowers on the ground. Its very green, I think. Anyway, the music is pretty decent and it looks good.

I also like the rooftop. I know its been done in a bunch of other fighting games before, but for some reason its done better than ever in Tekken 5. The music is also very frantic and heavy. I had a really heated match between Kazuya and Law going on there and it honestly looked like an action movie. I know exactly what you mean with the Matrix remark. They were moving so fluidly and the moves were very spectacular. Kazuya would jump with a kick right as Law would go for a sweep, Kaz would punch as Law would crouch/duck, etc. It was almost like it was choreographed. Really fun to watch and even more fun to play. :)

Damn it, Namco. We can't use the Prayer Beads for Heihachi's 1P Costume?

That, with the tied up hairstyle would make him straight up Gouki. :D

My thoughts exactly. If there's one thing I hate about the customizations its that you can use all of the items for all of the costumes.

Yeah, the intro rocked. My favorite parts: (1)When Kazuya and Heihachi are standing back to back, right before they start fighting the Jacks. (2) When Anna fires the rocket at Nina, and it goes in slow motion and shows the lipstick on the rocket (very cool!) And (3), when Feng Wei deals the final blow to his master. During that part, the music is pretty cool too. What do you guys think, does this beat T2's intro?

Hmm, those are almost exactly my favorite stages too, except Final Boss 2 (Ground Zero) is one of my most hated stages, and Final Boss 1 (with the tornadoes) is one of my favorite.

Favorite:
1. Final Boss 1 (Awesome tornado effects in background, and the effect going over the ground is really cool.)
2. Moonlight
3. Cathedral
4. Sunset on rooftops (the sun being in my eyes is a great excuse for when I lose! Ha ha! ;) )
5. Portal to Hell, or whatever that stage with the red sky is called. It's a little dark, but overall I like it.
edit: 6. Secret garden -- I forgot about this one. I had no idea those spirits floating into the air came from squishing the frogs. Heh. I'll look for that next time.

Worst:
1. Suburban Jungle (uninteresting, and the music is kind of meh.)
2. Final Boss 2 (Too monotonous and shimmery! Also the music gets annoying)
3. Pirate ship (I just don't like the Pirate theme. Also, again, the music. :\ ) Music can really make or break a level (or even a game) for me.
edit: 4. Ice level. Overall just kind of boring.

The new characters are all fairly interesting additions to the lineup, and they feel a bit more fleshed out too.

It's interesting to see all the stuff I learned from Tekken2 for Jun still work to some degree with Asuka. In fact a good 80-90% of the stuff I've learned from previous Tekken games still apply to T5, which is a pretty good thing I suppose.

Finally picked up a copy tonight and played for an hour... My thumb already has a giant blister from using the damn d-pad!!! Is there a way to use the control stick instead?

I'm not sure how you can use the control stick, but what I have done for years now while playing fighters (before I got my arcade sticks) is putting my shirt over the controller when I play (assuming you have a semi-thin shirt on). Circular moves will never hurt your thumb again. :lol

nice av Defensor.

my bad i'm a n00b at this game, didn't know about backdashing.

yeah blisters and stuff is when i first started played SF2 on snes, once you know what your doing you don't need to press so hard or mashing stuff so you don't get blisters.

god fucking damnit this game likes to rob you of victories.

Also I changed Julia's top and bottom to leather brown, cause all blue looked stupid. Only thing im gonna buy is the gun cause every other piece of equipment for her looks fucking stupid.

I still get blisters after long sessions of GGXX. 3d fighters on the other hand tend to be slower and not as hard on the thumb, so I'm fine with them.

i've used that technique since snes days lol... my friends to this day still laugh about it sometimes

My top tier characters... (this is against real people mind you :p)

1) Bryan Fury - One of my main advantages with Bryan over Asuka or Jin is I have a really strong ground game.
2) Asuka - While I may not be as good with her yet, I'm spending a lot of time trying to learn her mechanics and flow. Plus I love me an attack reversal!
3) Jin Kazama - The classic. I'm hoping to switch out for Devil Jin once I unlocked him because I prefer T3 Jin.

Is there any reason for Jinpachi being not playable? It doesn't make sense when you got his character model and moveset and voices done, but somehow you can't use him. Never happen in a fighting game as far as I remember.

There must be a way to unlock him!
