The Official TEKKEN 5 Thread

I tried searching but you have to register. I'd rather not take your word for it as you said Kuma wasn't a crummy character. If you're good at him/them and have some nice strategy/element of surprise, cool! Doesn't make up for the fact that he sucks.

I was joking about Kuma. I play him, I know he sucks.

Damn, Raven rocks! Anyone else using him? I love his ninja teleportation moves. :)

As usual, the girls get more outfits than the guys. Xiaoyu has FIVE different outfits. Asuka has four. And then there are some other characters with three outfits.

I wish you could customize the third/fourth/fifth outfits too; they only ket you mess with the two "default" oufits.

Really? Ah man, I wanted to mess around with Asuka's Oh! Great costume.

Do only certain characters have extra outfits? I was under the impression that everyone did.

Another example of Namco half-stepping it. Really, the game is nice but it's not the full-featured, value-packed game some might leave you to believe. That's ok, though, since the gameplay, characters, and CG movies are good enough to make the game worthwhile. Still, when you think of what could've (should've?) been...

Speaking of Julia, first day I bought the game, a buddy of mine selected her and almost immediately was able to recite her 10-hit combos held over from the days of Tekken 3. I was pretty fucking amazed by that, but he did play a heaping amount of Tekken in college. Her combos are just tatooed into his mental synapses. Xiayou as well, man he is a beast with her.

I personnally would have liked Heihachi to get his pimpcoat back from Tekken 3 myself. Knowing Namco, they probably would have just stuck the Sumo diaper back in for his 3rd instead.

Julia > Asuka

Asuka is cooler. :) Besides, she's just a resdesigned version of Jun Kazama.

I find myself using almost all females in TK5 now: Asuka, Julia, Anna, and Xiaoyu mainly. But still messing around with Raven and Marduk here and there.

So who'll win this tournament?

So far, it's been the Mishima that's been on the cover:

Tekken had only Kazuya on the cover.
Tekken 2, Heihachi.
Tekken 3, Jin.
Tekken 4, all 3 generations, but Jin was the one in the focus.

Hrrrm.

Heihachi won Tekken 4.

I'm guessing either Kazuya or Jin/Devil Jin will win. It's hard to tell where the story will go from here. It could be something completely out of the blue, like the 19 year jump in Tekken 3 and now jinpachi returning.

Uh...what? Jin "won" Tekken 4.

Jin was disqualified in stage 7. Kazuya went on to the finals and lost to Heihachi.

All the stuff that happened in the dojo was after the tournament had already ended.

Wait, I think I already had this discussion before on this forum...twice. :P

Oh well, I don't care who won the "tournament". Since Jin defeated the supposed champion and Kazuya, he's the real winnah! :P His ending was the one that happened, so he won Tekken 4, the game, to me.

Can we just agree that Tekken's storyline is retarded and that
the Mishima most prominent on the cover
has the only ending that even matters? :p

Finally got to play, getting back into my Xiaoyu game. Seems her combo that I used in T3 and didn't work in T4 is back... as well as some new variations of it (b+3 rules).

Not sure what's considered her best, but these the ones I'm currently using:

(backturned) 4, b+3, 2, 2~1, ff+1+2, 1+2
(backturned) f+3+4, 3+4, 2, 2, 2~1, ff+1+2, 1+2
(pheonix stance) 1+2, df+2, 2, 2~1, ff+1+2, 1+2

Any new good stuff on her would be appreciated.

Replace f,f+1+2, 1+2 with f,f+2,1 if you're near a wall. That sends people further, so you can get a wall hit usually.

Other Ling combos

SS 3, b+3, 2~1, f,f+1+2, 1+2 or f, f+2, 1
CH 4~3, WS 2, 2, 2, 2~1, f,f+1+2, 1+2 or f, f+2, 1

Can someone please fill me in on what buttons correspond to what numbers? Is it clockwise starting with the left punch button or something?

I like SOME of Tekken's story. Joke characters like Roger Jr and Mukojin obviously have lame stories, but King has an AWESOME ending. Other good endings are Hwoarang, Kazuya, and to a lesser extent, Jin. I've also finished the game with Asuka and while her ending is funny, I don't necessarily associate it with being a good storyline. I like her anyway though.

I like the rivalries. So when King fights Marduk, or Anna fights Nina, or Jin fights Hwoarang, I like to imagine that its THE event of the tournament. It'd be like Sub Zero fighting Scorpion; everyone wants to watch THAT fight the most. :)

Roger Jr.'s story and ending are funny. That's one of the best parts of the Tekken story, they actually give stories for the goofy characters. I'm happy Kuma finally beat Paul in Tekken 4.

I think Tekken has overtaken MK as the series with the best story. That series has too many retcons and resurrections. Character death is an absolute joke in MK, which is sad considering it's main selling point as a franchise is that it's a fight to the death.

Oh yeah I agree with ya. I just used the SZ vs Scorp fight as an example. I think Tekken overall has much much cooler stories and characters. Plus I've yet to see an intro as good as T5's in any MK game. Or ANY fighting game for that matter. :) Though Deception had a nice intro, T5 raised the bar into the stratosphere.

Soul Blade's introduction comes to mind.

For those who haven't picked Tekken 5 up, Fry's has it on sale for 39.99 and giving away a free T-shirt with purchase.

Soul Blade intro aged badly. I prefer SCII intro. And naw I'm not looking for an argument I've already had this discussion like 3 times. If anybody does want to go into it again, I'll just cut and paste what I said previously.

Tekken 2's intro not only gave a good introduction to every character, but also put up the awesomest moment in Tekken canon: Heihachi climbing back up that cliff.

Tekken 3 comes close to being as awesome, but mostly on a technical level.

I have a dumb question: how to unlock the special costumes?

For example, Asuka's:
tekken-5-20050228033801504.jpg

I only found one additional costume for Asuka in the shop. Do I have to meet some other criteria to unlock the special one??? Thanks a lot in advance.

I'm not sure how it works but I just bought the $500,000 'special costume' and when I dress triangle to pick her, I get the school girl outfit, and circle gives me the one from the pic.

Buying the costume option gives you access to all their secret outfits, no matter how many they have. So you've got both right now. Hit circle for that one in the pic.

The Soul series is awesome for sure. But how old is that intro now? It doesn't look nearly as good as T5. If anything, you should say SC2's intro competes with it.

Well, I won't deny that Soul Blade's introduction is dated. Of course it is. However, it's important to consider for logic's sake that I'm not judging it against Tekken 5's on a technical level. Istead I'm merely saying that at the time of its release, Soul Blade's opening cinematic impressed me a lot more than Tekken 5's currently does. That's not to say that Tekken 5's isn't brilliant. It's filled with memorable and beautiful scenes--but there's a bit of fluff as well that could have been used to build up some of the lesser represented characters.

Ok I read ya. I agree that some scenes (Save the kitty!) are kinda dumb, but the opener is completely awesome. After the opener, my favorite part is probably Feng putting his master through the tree and Jin's transformation. Awesome.

Is Combot in there somewhere as an alternate costume for Mokujin or something? I haven't really had to time to buy stuff for characters other than Jin, King, and Asuka.

Wow, Asuka is damn hot in that pic^^. I'm always partial to Julia but if I get a hold of that costume with Asuka in it, I could be an Asuka user for now on. ^_^

I can walk through the game with Christie, but then I can't make a damn dent in Jinpachi with her. An unblockable fireball or unblockable stun palm I can see in a final boss, but both? Apparently Sega is the only company to understand the concept of a final boss just being an expertly skilled fighter rather than a giant monster who breaks all the damn rules.

I spent half an hour trying to beat the J-man with Christie, no luck. Any strategies?

Overall I'm pretty impressed with Tekken 5. The flow of the fighting is better than any of the others, and the ranking system they cribbed from VF4 is cool. This is the first Tekken game I've liked since Tekken 2.

fireball is easy to spot, just move to evade. Stun palm is another story. Momentum helps. He fell for a lot of throws n such but its mostly about keeping pressure on and dodging that damned fireball.

u+4 (circle button) is your friend. Keep doing that move until you knock him down. Then use f,f+3 (x button) as he gets up.

After spending some time tonight with Bryan on PS2 I'm seriously regretting ignoring him in T5 so far. What a monster! It's easy to take half their life off any launcher and I love buffering the chains of misery out of the qcf sway, comes out so fast. I need to buy a card with him tomorrow.

Bryan's range, power, and snappy speed has frightened me since T3. Not a matchup I'm looking forward to.

I'm ready to hit the arcade. How much are cards? I can only customize when nobody else wants to play, right? Do I pay only for the customization session?

They're 5 dollars. You only get one character per card.

You can customize everytime you put your card in. It's not like the arcade where there's a seperate customization menu. On the selection screen you've got the option of starting the fight, going to the shop to buy items and changing your ring name. When you insert your tokens, press start and go to the selection screen you just put in your card and it automatically selects your character.

What sucks is that you can't see the items you're about to buy. So you could see something like "scary mask" and think it sounds cool but then you buy it and it's really dumb looking. I'd check the PS2 version first before spending 500,000 on something. They don't even list what color is for what item. It's just "color 1, color 2 and color 3". You could spend 18,000 only to change the color of your belt or something lame like that.

In Japan they have a system set up where you can buy items on your cellphone or something.
