The Outer Worlds 2 hits 18,251 all-time CCU peak on Steam

Probably a factor too, but I had a friend who really loves Obsidian games, and saw him playing early in Steam already. Couldn't stop him, I failed :(
Yeah, why not...maybe its even a decent game mechanic wise. But when I see these "characters"...I know what is coming and i am not sure if I need that.

My biggest worry after Avowed was the entrance of marvel/millennial writing with the cringe humor and the quippy self-aware dialog.

Older Obsidian never did much of that, and I know The Outer Worlds is supposed to be satirical...but I'll wait and see since I still have game pass until the end of the year.

I'd say the word of mouth is pretty good but it doesn't seem to translating to sales. Shit's barely in the top 10 a day from launch? The number of reviews seems decent at least.

#9 top seller before it's even out.

Not bad, and this is just one of the three major platforms the game is/will be coming out on.

That's not good at all. Anticipated new releases hit the top 3-5 days/weeks before release. Dragon Ball Sparkling Zero was number 1 for a week+ before the game came out.

In sales or wishlists?

Also the reception for the game is weird on GAF, a lot of folks here say that they have no interest in it for various reasons, yet it's still doing reasonably well in the pre-release period.

Not sure if it's gonna top Circana next month, cause of Battlefield 6 and all, but it's probably gonna be in the top 10 on all major platforms, I reckon.

Sales. OW2 will jump up tomorrow when it drops and hover for a few days, but I don't think it will be there for long. We shall see.

Should make an appearance on the monthly chart. I don't expect it to hit the top 20 YTD.

It took 4 years for the first game to sell 5 million copies.

So I'm not anticipating huge sales numbers.

And it's actuially a very mighty result for an AA-game made on a tight budget by a small team.

I get it that GAF is not very into OW, but it's a cozy Bethesda-lite RPG that were released at the right time for the right price and found plenty of audience.

Oh, about the OW2 itself. Started what I roughly can call a second act and my god as an RPG this game is splendid. It's basically what Starfiled should've been, the Bethesda exploring is there and the branching, roleplay and writing is top-notch. Shaping up to be on par with Yotei as my favorite sequel of the year, really. I think that OC score should be higher.

The first game was huge , first aaa budget 3d Obsidian game since new vegas . Huge fanbase .

I was so disappointed with the game that I never want anything to do with this studio again .

Avowed was on less platforms, Xbox and PC only.

This is also on PS5 which is probably where a sizable portion of the audience is checking out, on top of it being on Game Pass.

Can confirm PS5 is where I'm playing it this week, especially since I have the boxed PS4 copy of the first one on the shelf. Shame th PS5 version of 1 never got a physical release.

I just saw on the Xbox PC store that they literally have a category for LBGTQ+ games. I dont mind that these games exist...people can make what they want. But it is as strange as when I see categories for black people. Like why are you trying to single us out? I like all kinds of games and I've never once looked for a game specifically made for me like im somehow a different audience than the gaming community at large. Its pissing me off.

Back on topic, The outer worlds 2 is in that category and it almost makes me not want to support this game though I have some interest in playing it. I dont need to be catered to as a black person. Its just so disingenuous. Debuting at these numbers on Steam kinda points to the lack of hype. The trailers were not impressive. As a matter of fact...they were offensive. Who remembers "and no you can't sleep with them"? I do...and it also pissed me off. Not because I won't have the ability to sleep with some game character. But because they are advertising that like it's a feature. Wtf is wrong with these folks?

Microsoft doesnt know wtf they are doing and havent been for years
Yeah no argument there. This wouldn't be the first time they spent over half a decade and tens of millions on a bomba.
I think many of us (myself included) were caught up in the hype of "New Vegas Developer creates RPG in space".
True, although the first one had long legs as well and even got a (shitty) remaster.

I guess maybe gamers were desperate for a Fallout-like experience after Fallout 76 shit the bed.

Sometimes there really isn't an excuse. Spiderman 2 sold gangbusters despite majority of gamers shitting on it. It really wasn't until recently (I would point to Suicide Squad) where we as a collective have begun to put our foot down on accepting mediocrity in video games. A great example of this is Sony First Party sequels seeing their peak CCUs cut in half from their predecessors.

Spiderman 2 has an 8.7 metacritic from users. I don't think a majority of gamers were shitting on it. I think a majority of people on this site were.

What does that mean? Elden Ring meant nothing prior to 2019. That was just 6 years ago.

Well I was pointing out that the Souls franchise is a 50 million copy sold franchise, Elden ring was of course going to do well.
I guess I misunderstood your post.

I thought it was pretty meh but only in first area. The graphics are substantially better than TOW1 although I wish hardware lumen shadows weren't busted. That said the writing feels very much like Avowed i.e millennial writing tier also of course TOW2 has a girl boss as the antagonist. Some of the female characters look nice tho unlike some modern games. Gameplay feels alright, combat RPG systems are neat enough, the world is static and uninteractable just like Avowed and unlike Oblivion. Like avowed the combat is the best part but it's still early for me, maybe the game is goated and I just don't know it yet.
