The Parallel Gaming Universe and it's Implications

Gaming was split in two sometime in the last decade.

We reside in the original gaming universe/timeline. Things began on Atari and PC and have progressed to what we have now. The Big 3 and Big PC. Games are played from start to finish and sometimes they come with a multiplayer component. The multiplayer got really popular about 20 years ago. Sometimes they're even making games with no single player (crazy).

While we were distracted with 28fps un vsynced Xbox 360 shooters, an evil was emerging. An entity that would work to take away our sweet sweet institutional investing. Funding the finest production of the crack that we so desperately desire. He barely seemed like a foe at first, o mobile gaming. We shrugged and moved on. While our mothers, wives and children were left to listen to its siren song. Not knowing we were vastly outnumbered; we carried on building collections. Warring for our x86 silicon of choice. We were the paypigs, these freeloaders pose no threat.

Fast forward to 2025. The majority of breathing humans in the world and the same affluent investors who feasted on EA, UBI, and ACTV shares now see Fortnite, Roblox, War Thunder and Candy Crush as the bluechip gaming IPs. Call of Duty and some Nintendo titles might have crossed into this realm, but our favorites have not. Gaming money is no longer vacuumed on the couch-to-TV pipeline. Sure there are wells that have not run dry in that pipeline, but after 2024, the big boys would be right to discontinue new drill sites. The rigs are cheaper to erect and sweet sweet volatility is so much better in the new world. Who wants a financially sensible 38-year-old as a primary customer when you can have his wife and kids? We are 1800s Europe. Soon to engage in a total war with each other to permanently collapse our empires of dirt and RGB accessories.

How do we break free? It won't be easy, and we will experience budget austerity. Do not fret too much; human talent can still play a big role. The puddles may suffer though. At least in the short term. Thief and Far Cry might be gone, but Selaco and Gloomwood have emerged.

We have our work cut out for us. Before we can even begin to climb, we must eject the barnacles and parasites. Our developer barracks are full of mentally ill people with 2-year community college game design degrees. Their exodus to retail work and NEETdom cannot come soon enough. Bring back the real autists and the spergs I say. The men who consumed far too much Red 5 as children, which honed their mental acuity for deep, low-level coding. We also have entire C suites full of people who would lead us into complete collapse. Send them out with their golden parachutes I say. No matter how this ends we're rebuilding from rubble, at least this way it comes quicker. There is no sense in fighting for a decade over their coffers. We will build our own.

AI will be the wildcard. It can either help us sate our craving for AAAAA puddles, soundtracks and cutscenes with less investment required, or crush us under the weight of self-assembling mobile slot machines. These games are made like scientific instruments to control the brain. It's possible they begin crafting them so well that even we fall under their spell. Spreading our expectant bussies and wallets at the same time for the shiny, flashing cosmetics and score boosts.

Remain steadfast gentlemen of exquisite taste. It is always darkest before the dawn. This darkness is approaching. We now have a rival far bigger than us who would see us torn asunder tomorrow. Fight the demiurge. I hate the antichrist.

AI summary for those happy for them or sorry that happened

Gaming has divided into two paths over the last decade. The original gaming world, starting from Atari and PC, focused on single-player experiences but has seen a rise in multiplayer games. Meanwhile, mobile gaming emerged, becoming a significant competitor that has attracted many players, including casual gamers. By 2025, popular franchises like Fortnite and Candy Crush dominate investment interests, leaving traditional gaming behind.

To improve the situation, we must address the issue of poor talent in game development and remove ineffective leadership. We need to build a new gaming industry from the ground up, despite the challenges ahead. AI could either enhance our gaming experiences or lead to manipulative mobile games. We must stay committed and prepared to fight against this rising threat.

Entertaining read.

I think AI will not help us at all.
It will be next big "split" in our gaming world as you called it, but this time it will tear our community of enthusiast in half. Some of us will oppose to it, while others will see it as salvation.

Big corporations will jump on the bandwagon if they can, purely looking to maximize profits and to put more money in their shareholder's pockets. Benefitting the customer is always out of the question for these people.
They will bank on releasing an endless cycle of "minimum viable products", designed to trap players into their gambling machines disguised as video games.

As for the passionate teams, those really aiming to output something they can be proud of, my opinion is that AI should be out of the question. Surely it could help with the production in some way, but wouldn't AI detract from the passion of actually making a videogame? Wouldn't it start to create a certain dependency on those working with it? Will it attract talent, or dilute it? I'd say passionate developers need to pick the opposite road. Games need to be created by creative and intelligent people, not soulless machines.

We, enthusiasts, also need to do our part. I think we need to set aside this need for cutting edge graphics in every single game we play. Our games require innovation in the actual gameplay, and they need to be more fun than those that innevitably will be made with the help of AI.

Anyway, my two cents.
