The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I accept season passes as a reality of the business. But I don't know if "awesome" is the adjective I'd use to describe it.
That's fine as well. Getting more good Zelda content down the line was great news for me as well. Especially if it holds up to the quality of past DLC we got in MK8 and Splatoon.

I feel this a another good example of people being unhappy that someone else is excited or focusing on the positive side of things.

Ethan spends a lot of money on games - so the price likely isn't a mayor issue (even though 20 bucks isn't even that much compared to newer console season passes) for him so it's pretty much just additional content down the line for a game he already is incredible hyped for.

If you can't be excited about stuff like this on your own gaming podcast about one of your favorite series.... Why even bother lol.

To be fair I still haven't gotten around to listen the current episode because I'm a little sick and had to skip the gym.

Maybe I'm just cynical in my old age, but I think you can be excited for a new console without being blindly enthusiastic about it to the point of wearing blinders. I think I've heard Ethan talk about his one selling point about the Switch - the ability to use it as a portable - more than anything else on the show.

Meanwhile I know I'm treating it as a home console (and I wish I could buy one without the screen for 100 dollars less). So when I read things like I need to use my phone to invite people to play online because they don't have a system-level party chat feature and they want to charge 30 dollars a year for that, I'm just wondering what they're thinking.

I would just like to say, for whatever it's worth - that I love all the guys on the show for who they are as individuals. I think Ethan's enthusiasm for the games he loves is infectious and endearing, while Phil's absurdist humor is what keeps me laughing and Greg is down to earth and always full of wisdom. I wouldn't change a thing!

(Even though CJ is usually who I agree with, so he is therefore obviously the smartest and most awesome)

I get that and if you feel that way that's fine. I just don't see how this has anything to do with him being excited for more Zelda content down the line.

We also can't argue all potential Switch shortcomings when he brings something up because it fits the narrative. Him looking forward to Zelda DLC has nothing to do with Nintendo charging for online or offering a Smartphone App for voice chat.

Ethan had a couple interesting quotes when it comes to Switch in the last couple months, but at the same time many listeners seem to overreact now every time he mentioned the system.

Reminds me of his Vita talks when he would get shot down fast even if he talked bout interesting new titles, that usually don't get much discussion on the cast. Hell I watched Steins Gate because of him lol.

Let me make this very clear. I love Ethan. He is one of the nicest and genuine people I know. We can disagree and have heated arguments on a podcast and not have that change. As long as I can remember we have debated with friends about a multitude of aspects in regards to video games. We have been doing it since Nintendo vs Sega and it will continue until the FCC shuts down our internet access.

As I discussed with CJ earlier today, we can debate and point out issues we have all we want, in 8 days none of us will care as we explore Hyrule.

Also thank you for all the kind words this week. It is always a ton of fun hanging out with those guys and talking games.

Well...we can explore Hyrule for as long as that left joycon holds out. Otherwise we can just look at Hyrule from a fixed position ;)

Lol! Is this *the* Phil?

I was quoted by internet celebrity?! Cool!

So I finally listened to the episode over the past couple of days, and especially regarding the Nintendo messaging and OS features stuff, I felt like I was just trying to enjoy my Thanksgiving dinner while my uncles yell at each other about politics.*

I think Kevin was a bit over the top.... but maybe you need that when there's Ethan ;)

Nintendo's big issues remain those that became apparent in January: Lean launch, iffy third-party and pricing issues around both the hardware and accessories. Nothing they've done (or haven't done) since has really moved the needle much more than that, IMO...

I also think Ethan and CJ's defenses of Nintendo were pretty flimsy (and thank you, Greg, for calling out "Nintendo is a toy company." It was a bad excuse before Christmas!). Maybe CJ and Ethan agree with Kevin (in which case, Match Point Larrabee!), but I don't think people, outside of a subset of NeoGAF users, care about the OS. Nor do I think that the broader public knows much about Nintendo's online plans... and maybe debating that question would have been better :) ...because I think what Nintendo should do (which is inform gamers) and what it needs to do are two different things.

* I don't have big family Thanksgiving dinners... nor, to the best of my knowledge, do my uncles get into loud arguments about politics.

BEST. EPISODE. EVER.

Put this episode in the history books I've been recognized by a world famous podcast. 538. BELIEVE.

I'm glad that CJ actually went back to remind himself of the problems other consoles had at launch. I agree that the Switch has issues, but I still get defensive about it because so many people act as if it's unique in having those problems, when that's just silly.

Just a quality of life suggestion for you guys, but the next time Ethan starts to explain how great hardcore mode in Fire Emblem is because there are "stakes" but then goes on to explain that he resets the damn thing every time someone dies could you just turn his microphone off?

Just because other consoles of the past have had issues, doesn't excuse the Switch. Aside from the Joycon issues:

  • Online is not ready at launch
  • Virtual Console is not ready
  • Still no united account system (and account system and ID confusion)
  • Aside from bringing Zelda from the Wii U (with really no enhancements outside of some performance stuff), the launch lineup is the worst I have seen on a mainstream console going all the way back to the NES?
  • Accessories are ridiculously over priced.
  • You can't even preorder a pro controller right now in the US.
  • Zelda Limited edition preorder stock issues

My point is don't give Nintendo a pass just because of past launches. It doesn't have to be this way.

I'm very excited for Friday, but I agree with all of this.

The Switch launch is the modern equivalent of the shitty Japanese Dreamcast 1998 launch (Godzilla Generations, July, Pen Pen TriIcelon, Virtua Fighter 3tb).

Remember these Iwata quotes?

However, after this period, we could not provide the market with strong software titles in a timely fashion. As a result we could not leverage the initial launch time momentum, and sales of GameCube slowed down. To avoid repeating this with Wii, we have been intensifying the software development, both internally at Nintendo and at developers outside the company, in order to prepare aggressive software lineup for Wii at and after the launch.

With the DS and Wii, following the titles that were released at launch, the momentum dropped when there was a gap in software releases. We’re making plans so that this type of thing won’t happen.

As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch.

I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of titles in January and February.

I can't find the (Emily Rogers?) article that had all of these, but I'm pretty sure there were more. And let's not forget Reggie who certainly put all of this through his spin machine at the time.

It's going to be interesting to see what 2017 has in store for us, but I'm hoping it's not another apology.

You are giving Nintendo a pass though, you're buying the system. Put your money where your mouth is. :p

To your points:
  • is there really no online at launch? I figured most people wouldn't use it until the Splatoon 2 test anyway, but I figured it would be there anyway.
  • That's not surprising at all, these things are pretty much never ready at launch. The PS4 still doesn't have PS1 classics, took years to get PS2 games, and offers no BC with them at all.
  • They already have a unified account system with the Wii U and 3DS, unless I'm missing something?
  • This isn't a launch lineup issue, this is a much serious issue. They'll have no 3rd party support from big publishers for the life of the system. A (seemingly) amazing Zelda game that you can play on a plane is close to as good as it's going to get with this thing. Considering the Nintendo line-up and the indies line-up I think people that pick up a Switch will have a lot of great games to play on day 1.

My idea of giving them a pass would be me buying the system. I'm not touching this thing at launch. I'll buy it if and when these problems are worked out.

You are giving Nintendo a pass though, you're buying the system. Put your money where your mouth is. :p

No, I am buying Zelda. Nothing else. Also I make enough money, have no wife or kids, and paid off my 2010 RAV4. I can drop $360 to play a game I really want then sell the game and console afterwards.

I should also add that the reason I don't see the lack of Virtual Console as a problem is that I don't ever want to play Virtual Console games on a platform that doesn't have a d-pad. They can put as many of them on there as they want, but I'm not buying them.

And I know I could use a Pro Controller, but I already have a solution for playing old games on my TV. My only interest in VC on Switch would be playing games off the TV, which means using the Joy Cons. No thanks.

Phil being so meh about the Switch (at least on the podcast) has surprised me quite a bit.

Eeh...I don't have much reason to be excited. I mean, Zelda's about it, and I've been lukewarm at best about 3D Zeldas for a while now.

Is Shovel Knight day one? I'll probably buy Shovel Knight.

I'm about as big a Nintendo fanboy as you get, and I won't be getting a Switch day one - mostly it's that I can't afford it right now, not when I can get Zelda fro my Wii U.

Theres simply no urgency. I think the Switch looks fantastic, but I can understand a bit of a ho-hum hype for it at the moment.

I agree about VC and accessory prices but I think some of it is being blown out of proportion, I think it's an great launch lineup: Zelda, Snipperclips, Bomberman, Fast RMX, Shovel Knight, Setsuna, 1-2 Switch, there is a little bit of everything and why shouldn't we count Zelda? Twilight Princess counted for the Wii, all the sports game that get ported to xbox/playstation at launch "count" as games. People say that BotW is being ported over without taking advantage of the Switch's features but they forget that the Switch's main feature is gaming on the go, not the HD rumble or the motion sensors.

One could argue that the Switch lineup is more compelling or as good as what the PS4 (Knack/Killzone/Resogun) or PS3 (Genji/Resistance) offered at launch. That's just my opinion but to call it the worst since the NES doesn't make sense especially when the NES had an excellent launch lineup: Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Tennis!

BTW, I also subscribe to your charged shot theory but I think Nintendo is opting to unleash it little by little so that they have something "big" released once a month as opposed to unloading all at once. To your other points, online play does seem to be in place at launch with Bomberman and it does make sense for a "limited edition" product to be sold out.

So wait, am I understanding this correctly? Does Ethan have FOUR Switches that he is buying? 2 for him and 2 for his kid? That's madness and I don't mean that as an expression of admiration.

That's most likely the four he's willing to disclose with anyone. The other four he's buying behind the scenes to avoid further ridicule.

Hey Phil, has Dana expressed much interest in Mass Effect: Andromeda? I think last time she was on the show was for ME:3 and she didn't like how much of a shooter it turned into. Without the ability to pause and command powers/squadmates like before, I was wondering if she was going to give it a try.

I am more hyped to see Ethan playing one of his Switch while waiting inline for another/other Switch.

Please make sure there are pictures of this. Where is he located? I'll do it!

Can we get a Patreon for this stat?

It's a Mass Effect game, so she's definitely still excited for it. Maybe she can come back on the show and give her thoughts on it after it comes out.

Very nice that that Greg will get his Launch Switch after all. Interested to hear everyone's opinion on the next show.

That would be pretty cool. Don't really care about ME... But Dana talking about some RPGs was always entertaining.

Great callout on b3b0p's bad opinion on the show. Shame Bane didn't make an appearance.

Please.

I've been listening since close to the first episode. It's still a good podcast regardless. I was providing a little feedback. Perhaps I should re-state it such that.

Hey guys, wonderful podcast, I've been listening a long time. However, one nit-pic I have that bothers me a little bit while listening is all of Phil's funny voices (it's not nearly as bad as Wombat's from CAG though). It makes it hard to get into each week and I feel like I have to be in the right mood to handle it. Maybe I'm just a depressive introverted video game geek, so don't take the feedback too serious. The off topic banter sometimes is strange a little difficult to handle, but otherwise, 5 stars, great production value, two thumbs up. Keep it up! I love the Generation 16 too!

Edit: May I make a request, since some people like the joke voices, can you throw in some Scrooge McDuck, Bart and Home Simpson, and perhaps some He-Man, Ninja Turtles or Tiny / Looney Tunes? That would swell. Not a fan of Family Guy. Thanks, Chris

I can't wait for CJ and Ethan to tell us how it's actually easier to type in numbers from a virtual numpad than long usernames with capitalization and accents and all that.

CJ "Well it's only a one-time thing anyways so it's not a big problem"
Greg *rolls eyes*
Ethan "And also what's really great is it just works! I don't have to ask anyone how their username is spelled because I know numbers and young kids learn numbers before the alphabet. It's actually quite clever."
Mike *extends hiatus*

Accurate. Friend codes are a more cumbersome system than just being able to add usernames, but I don't find it as offensive as others do.
