The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Rumor and speculation is serious biz, especially when you're rumoring and speculating not about product but about people and studio turmoil.

It's an unfortunate situation for all involved. Not sure there's anything else to be said, really.

Now that Pete Dodd has been exiled from the NeoGAF community (which i'd say closely is closely intertwined with the P1P), its going to be really awkward whenever he pops up on the show (tweet or on-camera).

I'd say ban the whole bunch. They are guilty by association.

Especially that mik guy. Then we can invite Gies back. I'll cover the $10, so it will be cool.

Next episode will be recorded live in 3 minutes. Watch here.

Before they start I will just say that if Mik is missing from this episode I will be officially retiring from my position as a P1P fan.

EDIT: It's the full crew with kids in the background :-)

Lol, one might say you're not a P1P fan, but a Mik fan! :)

Whilst I do love me some Mik, I actually so much a P1P fan that I prefer the full crew in place every episode. Their chemistry takes a huge hit with anyone one of them being absent.

Speaking of being absent did I hear Mik say something about "with my departure from my company" etc.? I haven't been following Twitter for a couple of weeks but did Mik quit his job? Did Mik quit his job to be the designer for Pete Dodd's Murder Journalism website? Is Mik now even worse than Satan and close to as bad as Pete Dodd? These questions will need an answer.

No matter what happened, all I know that Shu is responsible and this is further proof that SCEWWS is fucked.

did I hear Mik say something about "with my departure from my company" etc.?

I definitely did not say that. I remain gainfully employed. Thanks, Obama.

It was really fun to talk with the dudes again today. I missed it. Because I am corny.

Also, I am definitely designing an identity/site design for Pete's new venture. We've been friends for a decade, and I'd never charge him to do so--just like he'd never get in the way of what I wanted to design. I think it will be neato, as will the site and its content.

Good to hear. I can't wait to see the site and all the controversy it produces :-) What ever happened to your plans to maybe write reviews for games?

Still planning on it. I'm just lazy. I already have the formula--it's one I've been using for years here: http://thefanboys.com/category/reviews/

The concept is pretty simple--the number of words used to review the game is the score. It solves the age-old problem of a 100-point scale: "What's the difference between a game scoring an 87 and an 88?" Under my rubric (as Arthur Gies would definitely--DEFINITELY--call it), the difference is simple... I needed one more word. It's ironclad, foolproof, and completely unimpeachable. (it also means shitty games get fewer words, which is kind of a nice byproduct)

This post is like a 105/100.

I am confused.

Is the point of such review score system to be a joke? I mean doesn't it make score pointless if it's increased by describing negative aspects? I mean the BioShock 2 review added to the score by pointing out that a con is that it's not BioShock 1. What is this even?

Mik why? WHY?

It doesn't do that at all. The number always reflects my review of the game. This is not confusing.

But like you said above "I just needed that one word" being a difference of one score point. What if you just needed that one word to describe how bad it is? Also I am already confused due to the Bioshock 2 review so your system isn't perfect :-)

I'm a good enough writer to sort that out.

We'll see... we'll see. I'm keeping my eye out on you.

Next weeks topics should include how Google's April 1st joke for this year is probably better QOL product than anything Nintendo will ever make.

Phil is the most likely out of the crew to twist an ankle trying to catch the pokémen.

EDIT: Wait what? I thought you had to physically go to the location to catch the pokéman instead of just clicking shit on your app. What a waste.

Aww man, not nearly enough warning on those Burial At Sea spoilers this episode. I haven't played either ep yet, would've like to go in without that knowledge :(

I was listening to it live and laughed at Greg's "spoiler warning" before ruining the story for both episodes at one go. I couldn't care less about that game but I'm sure some people still consider the second episode to be fresh from the oven.

I was in the process of getting off the bus at the time and had no chance to do anything about it, I did manage to skip ahead through the rest of the talk but still got that big spoiler for Ep1 :(

Their handling of the whole Famousmortimer "Saga" of the last week was spot on.

I too agreed with them that Mr. Dodd fucked up big time, and deserved his permaban as such. HOWEVER, the amount of hate thrown at him from users and even some mods was absolutely disgusting. Yes, he messed up and deserved his ban. But that does not take away from everything he did before then, not least of which was #ps4nodrm. And it certainly does not make him some awful person. People make mistakes, and his was a particularly bad one. But the vileness he received was uncalled for.

I hit pause before the spoiler, but that was some fast action. I jump 10 minutes because dont know how much take to talk about the ending.

The ban talk was very interesting. I have the same impression. "Hey, what? But this is almost the same thing when people was talking about Amy Hennig leaving ND..."

This is joke post right?...

You don't think it would be a perfect QOL application to go visit locations around you to catch pokémans? Sort of like geocaching but without any physical goods at the end. It being just "tap here on the map while sitting on your fat ass isn't exactly how the Google ad promoted it and based on said ad I thought it would be a QOL type April 1st joke turn into a real campaign to hire someone who visits most of the locations.

I still think Nintendo could rip off Google and do it. Make a GPS enabled iPhone app that you have to take with you to visit certain locations and when you are withing 10m or so you get the pokémun.

I didn't read the Hennig thread but a known leaker of information claiming someone got fired for incompetence when he wasn't is a tad more horrible than some loud-mouth know-it-all making stuff up from their ass without ever really pretending to back it up.

I see things differently, morality is not some sort of ledger system where you add up all of the "good points" and then subtract "bad points". His actions should be judged for what they were. He acted without integrity and never even considered the ramifications of his actions. And for what, to gossip about a freaking videogame?

In no way is reporting on a videogame delay vital enough to the public interest to merit these actions even if the rumor had been true. P1P is usually pretty critical of the lack of quality in "video game journalism" so I was surprised to see them take the stance they did on the topic, even going so far as to dabble in a little victim blaming: Why was he ever working so far away from his kid! Maybe the two weren't mutually exclusive; maybe he has a sick child and is incompetent.

The fact that those points where even considered shows how acidic and damaging Dodd's comments were. Even after the rumor has been categorically denied, the idea that Col Rodgers did something wrong is hanging on him.

I don't think Mr. Dodd is a bad person or even meant ill. But I think he acted without integrity or forethought. I think having insider info was so intoxicating to him that he stopped seeing human beings and saw a fun game to play. But intention takes a back seat to actions and Mr. Dodd acted deplorably.

As to the reactions in the thread, obviously some people crossed the line, because this is the internet and that is going to happen, but in general, I think the reaction was appropriate. Neogaf has a way of self policing; it is one of the ways that the forum maintains it's level of decorum. The thread was Neogaf's way of saying that these types of rumors are not cool.

I agreed with the ban. I did not agree with the almost 1984-style ("We were always at war with Oceania!") turnaround on opinions on him.

The reaction wasn't "Sorry to see you go dude, but you fucked up", it seemed to me more like "OH thank God that guy is gone! I never liked him!"

huh? But it is what it is I guess. And in the end, we agree that he deserved his ban, precisely because you are right that morality isn't a "ledger" system- if it were, he wouldn't be permabanned because of his points in the "Good" column. But acting like he was always some sort of nuisance, I may be wrong, but that is def not the vibe I got from GAF when he posted info on here. The majority of people seemed cool with him.

--- it seemed to me more like "OH thank God that guy is gone! I never liked him!"

Well his ego really started to stretch towards end. He definitely deserved some pats on the back for passing information forward from industry insiders but he wasn't exactly a humble character. Not that many people have a podcast named after them and launch an IndieGoGo campaign to fix video game journalism with a website named after him.

Other than that he always seems to be a reasonable guy with his head on his shoulders and feet on the ground but I guess he just wanted to market himself way above what his qualities actually are. Even his IndieGoGo is strugling to reach its goal so I guess his ego has some deflating to do.

EDIT: Speaking of egos, another person to think very highly of them self and incidentally name a podcast after them self is Garnett Lee. Now there's a person I wish would join Polygon already.

Pete Dodd never really did insider stuff on P1P, so I see no reason not to have him on. It's not like the dude killed a guy. I know he had a lot of enemies here, but he's good at podcasting. He's banned from NeoGAF, not exiled from talking about games forever lol. He made a mistake and hopefully he learns it. But the piling on is ridiculous.

I hope they have him on again.

I hope they have him on again.

Of course they will. Dodd I don't personally like [on the podcast] but would to hear more from the old guy Rich something-something [Grisham?]. He's a little old-fashioned but enjoyable and has tons of experience. Worst guest ever was the Sega mascot but we're clear from him until Sonic Boom comes out.

Fuck off.
