The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Some people I trust for these things are playing Akiba's Trip, and if there's an actual game there I might bite... but there is no way in HELL I'm buying it in a store. PSN or... sigh... bust.

Rather than target a wider audience with family friendly anime, they target a smaller, more rabid audience who are much more willing to spend money on merch and figures and pander directly to them with teh sexy animes, mainly because it's a stable-ish income stream compared to the wider audience and that wider audience is already on lockdown with Pokemon/One Piece/Youkai Watch. This now has also extended to games, which is just another channel to exploit otaku. Some games do break out beyond that though.

There's that and you have remember that we absolutely did not get anywhere close to everything that was being made in Japan in prior decades. After the anime boom in the early 2000s, we got way more stuff, and the increased popularity of the Internet has insured that we know of pretty much everything. Basically, anime and games centered around fanservice have existed for a very long time; we just didn't know about them.

Yeah, it's sort of like how a foreigner would think American TV is the best thing in the world because they don't get shows like Jersey Shore or House Wives of Atlanta or Honey Boo Boo or Hoarding Storage Wars. We're at a point where almost every single anime aired in Japan is available legally in the West with a few notable exceptions (Sazae-san, the longest running anime at over 7000 episodes and has been running continually since the 60s, is a show that will never be released here).

You have to keep in mind that most anime is aimed at the nerd/gamer audience and serves as marketing. It airs are 3AM in timeslots paid for by the studios and are sponsored by companies that own the franchise that the anime is a part of. That stuff is basically the Honey Boo Boo of Japanese TV.

Science will never know whether Phil purposely went in the Juice Newton direction or that was the only "Newton" song he could recall, but I was pleased to find that Olivia Newton-John recorded a version of it in the 70s (which is, of course, at the end of the episode).

Holy shit I don't think I have ever heard anyone mention college hockey (the best hockey) on a podcast before.

The NHL 15 fiasco has me real worried whenever I hear "building a new foundation for Madden" because you know that the only mode that will make it moving forward is MUT.

Also Phil, whenever they give you time to talk about Dynasty Warriors you trip all over your dick fumbling for something besides the mechanics to talk about. The adults were having a real conversation, no need to get petulant.

It was definitely mentioned in Season 1.
 
I've vented about this enough on GAF but the New 3DS thing really does bother me. Honestly these days I find myself getting less and less worked up over gaming news, so it seems a little unfair when CJ tries to just dismiss the issue with the standard "gamers backlash about everything" complaint. I mean, it's true, but that doesn't really address whether or not they have a point in any specific situation.

I think it's lame that Nintendo is releasing an iteration of the 3DS with upgraded specs. It's not analogous to Game Boy Color or Apple products. The GBC released a decade after the original GB and was basically a new system, and with Apple there is a precedent and expectation in place that there will be a new version of their products every year (whether you are for or against that is another matter).

I never thought I would run into the issue of purchasing a gaming console or handheld and not being able to play certain big retail games on it because they were made for a different version of the same platform. There is no precedent for that. The closest is DSi but even that isn't comparable, in my opinion.

I'm used to Nintendo iterating on their hardware and I've got no issues with that. I bought a 3DS and a 3DS XL on launch day, for instance. It's really just the spec upgrade with exclusive major retail games issue that is rubbing me the wrong way. It also has nothing to do with Xenoblade, as the 3DS version looks horrible and I've already played the game on Wii. I'm more concerned with the precedent being set with this move.

If this was the real successor to the 3DS I'd be jumping for joy, but instead it's some weird half-step that does nothing more than confuse the market and cause me to think twice about investing in Nintendo hardware at launch. I'm not saying I'm going to boycott Nintendo products or anything that extreme, I just think it's kind of stupid.

Look at the market - launching a successor/completely new handheld platform may not even be a viable strategy anymore. The 3DS itself had a slow start so I'm guessing in part that Nintendo is doing this "New" 3DS in to guard against that - it's still a 3DS, so Nintendo is not abandoning that platform or its users, but it is upgraded to allow for better games and faster/better operation.

If you're already a 3DS owner and follow the market at all, it's unlikely that you're going to be confused about the new hardware. If Nintendo is phasing out/doesn't plan to sell "old" 3DS hardware after the "new" model is introduced then that's another link in the confusion chain gone. Hard to say how many or what games are only going to be "new" platform compatible but to me if it's a worthy product and consumer interest is there the market will figure it out.

But I'd be very interested in a new vita that used standard memory cards, added 2 shoulder buttons for easier remote play, had better battery life, faster/better wifi connectivity (cuz my OG Vita's is craptacular), and faster/better OS speeds. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Never mind if it also ran "new" games - for a system that's portable I'm almost always going to be interested in newer/smaller/faster/better (etc. like that Daft Punk song).

I'd buy that new Vita in a heartbeat as well! Like I said, I have no problem with iterations of hardware. The GBA SP, DS Lite, 3DS XL; I love them all! I just think it's dumb to change the specs so that certain games only work on the newer iteration.
 
When you guys do spoilers for a game in the middle of the podcast, could you put the time stamps in the notes? I tried to skip through the Walking Dead spoilers, but couldn't seem to find the end and just gave up and deleted the podcast.

I figured as much, but don't they do their normal outro stuff afterwards? I like it when a podcast is recorded like normal and then stick it after the end of the podcast, but if I didn't miss anything, that's fine.

No, because in this case the new hardware is clearly just a minor iteration. The jump isn't in-line with what you'd expect out of the successor. If Nintendo was positioning this exact device as the next Nintendo handheld I'd be pretty disappointed at how similar it was to the 3DS.

The bottom line is I don't like minor spec changes in dedicated gaming consoles/handhelds. This isn't PC's we're talking about (or smartphones for that matter). If that's the way of the future I guess I'll have to get used to it, but right now I think it's stupid.

To me it's unclear whether or not there are going to be many games that require the spec changes the "new" 3DS offers. We know of Xenoblade Chronicles, but will that come to the west? This could be a situation like the DSi where we get the new hardware but not the games that require it (there were only like 1-2 JPN-only games for that, I think). I'm fine w/that. Faster 3DS with better wifi, slightly improved battery, better 3D effect, built-in Amiibo sensor, camera nubbin, etc. - yes yes yes.
