The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Nice, a Firewatch spoiler discussion. I wanted to love the game, but a shitty protagonist and what felt like (late-game spoils and on)
a story that had no good ending so they just slapped some shit together didn't help.

Overall, Firewatch gets a thumbs down because not only did they not stick the landing, they collapsed hard on impact. I wanted to love it, but couldn't.

Pretty much my thoughts on it.

I think it just either needs to be an adult game on loss and relationships that assumes I'm mature enough to want to experience it without the hand-waiving, or flesh out the conspiracies and give them more of a proper payoff. Or maybe it is just a budget issue that prevented them from expanding on things. Either way, it feels like two lacking halves.

I really liked Firewatch, can't really argue with the shitty endings to the side stories
(the girls showing up at a farm down the street or whatever being the worst)
, but I actually liked the ending to the main thread.

Similar to Gone Home, Firewatch makes you tense. When I went
down into the mines, the whole way down I was expecting someone to suddenly be there when I climbed over one of the rocks, or that there'd be another freaky research site, or that it'd turn out that the crazy guy killed and ate the girls, or something crazy like that. When you find out the actual story it was a reality check. Of course all of that stuff wasn't going to happen, the main guy and Delilah got themselves worked up themselves up. The seclusion, boredom, and bizarre happenings got to them and they let themselves believe they were the center of a conspiracy. I think they did a great of job of getting that paranoia across to the player.

I agree with most of what you guys said, the ending didn't sour me nearly as much on the whole game though, it was great.

Will the Firewatch discussion make any sense if I haven't played the game? I had originally planned to pick it up on sale sometime, but have so much else to play that might never get around to it (plus I'm gun-shy because a lot of people who I feel have sensible opinions have griped about the ending).

So I think I'm ready to get spoiled as long as I don't have to have played it to follow along in the conversation.

I think the conversation at first will be a bit confusing because we do go off a bit without any context. I feel like we rolled back and explained everything a bit better about halfway through, though :)

I can't believe the show is almost at episode 500. I started listening around the early twenties.

In that time I learned to drive, graduate high school, graduated college, beat megaman 2 and I've been working on my career for about 3 years.

Jesus Christ.

Keep up the good work guys! Last few weeks have been solid!

Yeah, also 10 years of podcasts. Crazy. We started when I was in my late '20s and now I'm almost 40 holy crap. :O

Also! I was on the Bracket Podcast this week helping to determine the Best Video Game Protagonist. And you can listen to that right here: http://www.bracketpodcast.com/episodes/2016/3/9/episode-108-best-video-game or in your favorite podcast client of choice.

Bracket was a lot of fun and certainly worth your listening time. (They've done a number of video game episodes previously too, if you're into it.)

With regards to the VR as the regular game play device I don't think that will happen.

The games have to do the preparation for the VR format which is reversed by the break-out box. Creating the virtual room and virtual display device costs additional resources. I don't see them having that kind of overhead reserved to just enable that without sacrificing performance of the actual games.

Also the resolution will not be great. Which is a problem with VR.

---

Edit: Well, ignore that shit. ^^^
They announced cinematic mode where you can play standard games in 3 different zoom levels.

Of course my point is only 100% disputed if it's an actual a virtual room. If it's just a display that follows your head then it's way cheaper processing wise.

CJ, the Youtube video seems to be set to private. Is that right?

I just started listening, but while I agree with the sentiments around TV sports broadcasts in VR, I'm really skeptical about how likely (or soon) it will be before there is any sort of significant broadcasting done that way.

I don't think you can deliver, via Internet, a solid live VR experience. And as for traditional providers, way back in the early days of HD and set-top boxes the promise was that maybe you'd be able to choose your camera to watch the football game or whatever. Still waiting on that.

How the hell do you "mainline" Paper Jam and it takes 42 hours? I got all the Paper Toads and it only took me 25 or 26 hours to finish the game. It's not an unending nightmare like the last game, Dream Team.

Thank goodness. I'm sitting at about 22 hours right now, all paper toads saved and going through the castle. Sure feels like the end game to me but I'm not sure. All I know is that every battle has gotten really tough all of a sudden.

The final few bosses are pretty hard. Of course, you can always lower the difficulty level in the option menu.

Ethan's a good guest. Enemy of the show, Cbake, is also a good guest. I will still like to see Mike make his return at some point.

The closest thing we have to that would be a service like UFC.tv. You can choose your camera (broadcast, red corner, blue corner, overhead, etc.) as well as the audio (English broadcast, Spanish broadcast, red corner, blue corner, etc.). Maybe NBA League Pass and other streaming sports services incorporate these options now as well (I haven't subbed to any for a year or so, so I wouldn't know).

Yeah, I guess there are some services like that. There was certainly a time when it was suggested that you'd be able to access these things as an average consumer -- and we haven't seen that... but there are those subscriptions. The NFL, for example, offers a wide "coach's view" angle for users of its Game Pass service -- and I do believe it's available for live games.

(BTW, I know you weren't really addressing this aspect of my post, but rereading what I wrote I thought I should add that my questions around whether a live VR feed can work via the Internet is related to bandwidth requirements -- 360-degree video, as well as the presumably higher image quality that a VR experience might demand. I don't think the average home Internet connection is up to the task)

First time I've had the opportunity to use the chapter breaks. Nice way to get past the Batman/Superman spoiler stuff (and will use to call it up quickly after I see the movie later this week). Blocking out spoilers is really the ideal use for those.

I wasn't expecting a rape joke in the first 5 minutes of the show. Phil you've outdone yourself.

If Bill Cosby was a liberal judge, would Phil have been joking about it?

I agree, and wish more podcasts would use them to skip whole sections like that. Podcast Chapters on the Mac App Store lets you add them pretty quickly - it doesn't take long to add them to P1 at all. Patreon dollars at work (paid for the software)!

Is there anyway to use those on android or is it purely an iTunes thing?

I have access to them on the Podcast Addict app. Not sure if that's all of them though. I'll probably have to look on my iPad if there are more of em or something.

I was randomly checking out the gaming podcast charts on iTunes and noticed P1 was #4. Did Phil kill somebody??? Did Greg Ford come back???

Congrats guys!

Greg's comments about Alison Rapp were incredibly misinformed. Props to CJ for at least bringing the most basic information about the story up.

Let's read are a thing. Children books complete with illustrated images are uploaded to YouTube by the publishers themselves. And there are fan created works of people reading novels on YouTube. I seen teachers use them from time to.time when they don't have the official copy to use in the classroom.

Episode 492: Do It Yourself Link

Ha, just started listening and the intro section is classic CJ:

"Not much news this week, just a couple of Nintendo rumors and an Easter Egg from a 30-year-old Nintendo game!"

Ethan: "Uhhh, what about that thing that remote play thing that actually happened and was new?"

Ummm I don't know what CJ was going for on his MS exclusive line of thinking. He first says that he doesn't care/matter that the games come to PC. Then he starts lamenting that same fact, by noting that he wants games to be exclusive to the console.

Maybe I misunderstood, but they seem to be mutually exclusive opinions.

I, for one, would be ok with having all of MS first party on PC.

Edit: it was also amusing hearing Ethan's arguments regarding The Order graphics. While impressive, better hardware could make the game run better and have a bigger scope. Better hardware would make it possible for an open world game to have those graphics and run at 60fps.

Lastly, I really hate the "Do we need any better?" Arguments. They are lazy and complacent. If people listened to people making those arguments we wouldn't have:

- DVDs/Blu-rays
- HDTVs
- Smartphones
- All the technology that we take for granted today.

At some point into the introduction of these items there was a subset of people that pose the question "do we really need this?". I'm glad that the people driving technology forward don t listen to them.

I would like to beg the other hosts to submit news stories. CJ's Nintendo only news needs broader horizons.

I hope this isn't inappropriate of me to ask, but what are the rules on NeoGAF that determine if a show/podcast can have its own topic? Player One Podcast is a relatively small podcast in terms of listenership in comparison to the big boys, so it makes me wonder if there is any chance at someday creating a topic here on NeoGAF for my group's podcast/show in the future.

Don't think there is any rule so to speak, but do it in good taste

After all, look at these topics
