The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I feel bad for all the people in the giantbomb thread who were saying "didn't you see the interview, nothing is going to change!"

They are just going to be that much more heart broken when things do change. To be honest I think they lost a little magic when they moved out of that tiny basement. After the gamespot news broke I went back and watched some of the building a bomb videos. Man those early days were something

At the end of the day though Giantbomb being absorbed into Gamespot would still make an excellent site, just not quite as excellent as it once was, so I'm not worried. I swear though if they bring in a gamespoter into the podcast more often then they bring in Dave...

Anyway, this podcast skipped over the REAL news of that story - Jamie and Adam's Tested!

I'm still clinging to hope, but yea... might as well set my expectations to low.

I have to wonder what realistic options did they have. Is not that they can survive, as people with lives and families to maintain, with just an indie site. They tried to subscription model and it seems that wasn't enough.

I suspect Giant Bomb was profitable, they had pretty good traffic numbers. If I had to guess, it was the other Whiskey Sites with terrible numbers that tanked the whole operation, forcing the investor (Shelby) to dump the whole thing before he went broke.

Absolutely. Which is why I don't really question their decision. It's just the natural point where your idealism clashes with reality. Happens to everyone eventually, I think.

And it's one reason that I feel mixing your hobbies with your career can be perilous. At certain points along that path, your passion for the subject will butt heads with the need to generate revenue from it. It's a tough balance to strike.

I don't know, these guys aren't idiots. They've been in the industry seemingly their whole lives. They had to know a site on its own would not be profitable and that acquisition was the best possible outcome. I don't think this is as much idealism clashing with reality as "hey guys, we totally have to spin this as a great, last-ditch option or fans will revolt."

Ultimately they all seem like they just want to have a steady paycheck for writing about video games. Any altruistic bullshit was marketing and/or fan created.

The main point is to keep it a hobby. If you want to make a career out of it, you have to be prepared to make compromises. They were able to keep it as it was for as long as they could.

It would be great if they documented and made public the situation that they had when they started the site and the first few months. I presume that sacrifices were made even back then and how much they were getting out of the site.

After seeing the fan reaction to Tested and people harassing Jamie and Adam on twitter I think the GB guys were smart to get out in front of everything. I wish they didn't have to but thats just the way the internet is I suppose. I still stand by giving Will a hard time for allowing "futurist" in a headline though

Personally I want giantbomb to change. Ideally in a year Giantbomb will be the brand name of gamespot videos and all the news, reviews and wiki will be moved to gamespot. Focus on what you are good at, flight sim quicklooks and tuesday podcasts.

After the news broke that wikia is the largest gaming website I think this purchase is as much about the giantbomb wiki as the personalities. I've never used it though

Isn't the Wikia thing announced very recently and the negotiations for the CBS buyout started Dec last year?

It may be an added bonus now for CBS. Unless the Wikia thing is older than i thought.

If John Davison and the other guys at top are worth anything they would have seen wikia becoming the largest website from a mile away and started taking steps to compete with it.

Isn't gamefaqs under the same roof now too? I remember Dave on the bombcast awhile back talking about giantbomb's new tech for making guides. I never looked a user guide on giantbomb though, I wonder if any of them are good.

Thinking about it, its amazing how little of giantbomb I (and probably most people) used.

Sharing the same desires. Burning... like wildfire.

Awesome episode, fellas. I felt like the Giant Bomb talk was likely the smartest and most level headed that anyone is likely to hear anywhere. You had mike's knowledge of corporate PR vs takeovers, the rest of the gang's knowledge of what running a gaming site/magazine is all about... and sewart did a great job of reminding everyone that it was humans that were being talked about. It really was a great breakdown of the whole thing. Kudos.

Of course, you didn't read my tweet about the golf tournament so you guys can go eff yourselves in the a.

That reminds me of my favorite part of this episode:

mike: this kickstarter, subscription, donation stuff is such utter childish bullshit. Fuck all who would do it, lazy ass bums.
CJ: I'd like to thank the two people who donated to us this week

P1P's donations aren't much like a kickstarter at all though...

Haha! Even before we started talking about that stuff I'd planned to call out the two donations we got in the past week on the show (because we don't get that many and these two were from long-time listeners). I figured it would be funnier to mention it right then instead of the outro. :)

Perfect. I think Mike felt a bit awkward, which made it even better.

Yeah, when you give money to a kickstarter you actually get something in return.

love the show

I think you mean the other way around? When P1P asks for donations it's "We're producing this content anyway, if you feel like giving us money you can."

Kickstarters are "Give us money if you want this and we'll try to make it if enough people do."

Why split hairs? At the end of the day they are all filthy beggars.

Whom we love dearly, of course.

No. I get nothing in return for donating to P1P because they would make the show anyway.

If I fund a kickstarter, then I get something I want, some sort of reward, and my money back if the thing doesn't happen.

That said, I'm already sick of seemingly every niche video game thing being on kickstarter now even though I think the concept is fine.

Listening to the first part of the podcast, Since i missed it due to sleep.

I also Downloaded the ridge racer demo for the vita, but have yet to play it.

I was suspecting something was off because the download for the demo was less than 100mb and the full game I think is over 700mb.

Glad that i didn't have to run it to find out it was a sham.

How does Leo LaPorte make money? Are his podcast ads enough?

Between the ads and his radio show salary, he seems to be doing OK - hell, the donations on the main page switched to being a "tip jar" of sorts a long time ago.

Of course, he's probably getting bought inside of 12 months. I'd laugh if it was by G4.

Did Phil get his Vita yet? It's funny how years ago P1P was accused of hating on Sony versus now where everyone is a Vita fanboy*.

It's really just Mike. I think he loves it far too much for what it actually offers. CJs pre-Vita purchase hate was spot on.

I'm surprised that the honeymoon period hasn't ended yet. I've long since relegated my Vita to PSP duty, and even that is infrequent. Must be all those sports games!

I literally play it every day, still. To the detriment of my Mass Effect progress, to be honest.

Same. It's the first handheld that I carve out time when I am home to play instead of some console game on the 60" tv or a PC game. The Vita is taking away from Dota 2. That's a testament to it's amazingness.

I played the DS and PSP almost exclusively on the train when I lived in Boston. Since I moved back to the midwest I almost never play handhelds. This has completely changed that. I think it's the online component and (sadly) trophies.

Is it possible to beat RC Pro AM? That fucking orange car always owned me...

also, was it better to collect the letters to spell Nintendo? after you spell nintendo, you upgrade your RC car... but the races seemed to get harder the better your car got...

You've just reiterated my post.

Finally listened to last weeks episode today. It was kind of funny/ distressing to hear Phil say "Oh yeah, the baby's fine, it's just experiencing pain equivalent to your appendix exploding." Hopefully he's better now!

I've heard a lot of good things about The Witcher 2 on this podcast, mainly from Mik, so I bought the first Witcher a few weeks ago thinking I would play through it first. I am unimpressed with it so far. The voice acting is atrocious (switched it to Polish where it's a bit better), the writing is bad, the combat is boring, the environments remind me a lot of the first Fable game, and the presentation is really uneven. The first couple of missions seem to be errands, and I have enough of those to do in real life.

Does it get better? If not, is the second Witcher a lot better? Will I miss much by skipping this game and jumping into the second?

I quit playing the first game halfway through. Everything you say about it there is accurate and remains so--at least to the point where I bailed. The Witcher 2 is almost unrecognizable, other than thematically, as a sibling of the first game.
