The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I tried this podcast after it was mentioned on 8-4 and it is alright except for the kind of baffling choice of recording while there are little kids in the room constantly making noise.

Can they not get an hour away from their kids to record? I believe this has been in multiple episodes.

Nope. There really isn't. Especially in the case of Phil and I where we live in small enough places that there's really no way to escape our families for an hour on a Sunday. We do our best to keep it quiet, but it simply can't be helped a lot of the time.

Clearly what you guys need is a Kickstarter to get each of you offices that you can use to record in.

I can't imagine what we said that would have given you this reaction.
Phil was saying the thing that was going to derail the podcast would be his untimely death, then went on to talk about how we would go back and listen to him saying these things and be able to show that he had foreseen his own death.

It was impossible to not think of Ryan immediately, since Ryan just died six months ago, and immediately afterwards, tons of people were holding up a tweet he wrote in his last days where he mentioned dying.

Like someone else said, I didn't think for a minute that it was intentional or malicious, but it came off poorly none the less, and I had to turn it off.

Aw, I kinda like the kids in the background.

It's just Phil being Phil. It is a sensitive subject and I can understand why you do feel this way, but I wouldn't have thought he was referencing Ryan's tweets intentionally. The P1 Podcast guys are all really nice, hopefully this won't stop you from tuning in again.

This is absurd. You're a crazy person.

...right.

When does the gaf gaming podcast of the year voting start? Looking forward to voting P1P number one! Idle Thumbs is going down

This Ryan/Phil stuff is silly, but I also understand that a significant portion of gaming podcast listeners might be young enough where Ryan's passing is there closest encounter with death so far and therefore might be sensitive about it. I can only envy them :(

Fair enough. Perhaps I've been spoiled by podcasts where everyone can be in a recording studio. It is entertaining nonetheless, thanks!

Good for you? Not sure why you felt the need to turn this into petty grade school shit with snarky remark.

Never change, internet.

Not trying to be snarky (well, not too snarky), just pointing out that there's no way that ever would have crossed my mind. It didn't when it was said, and it didn't ring a bell until you spelled it out specifically. I'm wagering the same would be true for any of the other three guys--maybe even more so, considering I'm pretty sure I'm the only one of us who even listens to the Bombcast.

I wasn't making any accusations, and even said specifically that I didn't think for a second that there was anything intentional about it. It was still hard to listen to, and I had to stop that episode.

Nah, it's adorable. It makes me chuckle when the cast (seems to) get all worked up over the noise that the kids are making.

The last bit right before the outro left a bad taste in my mouth, given that Ryan Davis just died earlier this year.

Death offends me too, I hate that shit, but I don't think it's fair (or honest) to hold Phil responsible for your being upset.

GOTY episode is up:

Very few mentions of mortality in this episode. Everyone lives forever!

Speaking of death mik is it true that in the Mormon religion heaven is essentially you becoming god of your own universe? Because that sounds pretty rad.

As a learn-ed religion student of a wonderful university, I can say authoritatively that because Mike is already the god of our collective, present universe, such a fate would be a downgrade for him.

(Good podcasting year, all! I'm genuinely surprised that children have only minorly affected the number and variety of games you play and the quality of the recordings. Please podcast until everyone else's kids grow up and we can have a Player One Podcast Babies spinoff.)

HA...I sure showed Ryan Davis!

No, obviously I was not trying to make any sort of reference or connection there. Apologies to anyone who may have taken it as such. If it makes you feel any better, just know that nobody is going to bother making memorial artwork when I die. Well, my wife might write a little something, but that would be it.

Truth be told, the genesis of that idea (and by "genesis" I mean "the stealing of") came from a recent episode of Penn's Sunday School where I learned that James "The Amazing" Randi used to carry a handwritten note in his wallet--each day he would write a new one that bore that day's date and a message that said, "I, James Randi, will die today." So just in case something did happen, he would leave behind an amusing mystery to confound his loved ones.

Oh, and...

Let me guess--you're not married and you don't have kids. Because that is an adorable thing to think.

Someone will probably write your date of birth and death on that picture of the Phil Girl and use it as an avatar though. Close enough.

I think you need a break from the internet for awhile

Can't wait for the annual NeoGAF Podcast of the Year votes. The way 8-4 and Idle Thumbs have been the past couple of months have left me with a sour taste. I'll take a brilliant and funny podcast with babies and phones over all the boring guests Idle Thumbs and 8-4 have been clinging to this year.

My list will most likely be:

1. Giant Bombcast
2. Player One Podcast
3. Idle Thumbs
4. 8-4 Play

I know there were a couple of horrible episodes with horrible guests in Player One Podcast this year but it didn't do anything to hinder the amazing dynamic between the original cast.

Also I think Mike's hate towards @agies is the best thing ever. I get a chuckle every time he mentions that dumb fuck.

1. Player One Podcast
2. Red Sun Gamer - Sun of a Podcast
3. Gamers With Jobs
4. Player One Podcast*

That's okay. It's worth it to hear who has the worst behaved kids :). And also worth it to know that CJ still doesn't edit the show at all.

I actually took a LOT of toddler noises out of this week's episode. :) Depends week to week whether there is editing needed and how severe the noise is.

I detest children and this is still by far my favorite gaming podcast. I guess that says something.

By the way CJ, did you ever talk about the new battery pack for the Wii U gamepad on the show? I saw you made a thread for it but I don't remember if it was discussed or not. I'm thinking of picking one up now that PC support is coming to the gamepad.

Probs the best part of the show.

Baby noises are why I tune in.

Yeup, I find the baby noises charming.

I like when I hear a phone ringing because then I know I'm about to hear Mike say 'bush league'.

Yeah makes me laugh every time.

My top podcasts would be:

1) Player One
2) Giant Bomb
3) 8-4

Is there a voting thread yet?

I did make that thread but I haven't received mine yet so I don't have anything to talk about on the show on it. Looking forward to getting it though!

Not sure if this is interesting or not, but I tried, in an email before the show, to predict the other three hosts' top fives (actual answers in spoiler tags)...

There were?

Speaking of, no one is putting The Doddcast in their top 5? Famous gave you all so much and this is how you repay him :(

Anyway I'll probably put it up there. The current incarnation with the internet's co-host Rich Grisham is pretty good. If you're one of the weirdos who hates baby noises you'll like the Doddcast. Rich claims to have a 6-year old but he never pops up or interrupts or anything, despite the episodes lasting 2 to 3 hours. Personally I think he's lying. No house with a 6-year old should be that peaceful for that long

Mike's hard-on for Arthur Geis never ceases to amaze me. Those who don't know-- pretty much all of the negative stuff he says game journalists say are just quotes from Arthur (although there a few times where he misattributed quotes from Patrick Klepek to Arthur). It's not like people are writing articles about what Arthur says or anything. Mike chooses to actively listen to Rebel FM. So either he secretly loves Arthur or is a twisted individual who continues to listen to someone he hates, heh.

One of your theories is correct.

For what its worth - I wouldn't mind hearing you guys talk more about mobile games. I'll definitely check out Mini Golf Match Up this week. I don't think the audience dislikes hearing about mobile games as much as they just got sick of hearing about the death of handhelds a few years ago. I made this comment in the Weekend Confirmed thread earlier, but its funny how hard they were pushing the death of handhelds narrative a few years ago yet here we are this year with multiple handheld titles in the running for GOTY yet almost no mobile games.

That's not to say mobile didn't affect the market or that the 3DS and vita are just fine, but handhelds seem to be trucking along far from forgotten and 2014 might even be a better year for them

I like the kid noice in the background.

This podcast is as close to GAFcast as we can get.

Is it me or Mike's tase is closest to GAF's taste?

Never.

Mike chooses to actively listen to Rebel FM. So either he secretly loves Arthur or is a twisted individual who continues to listen to someone he hates, heh.

I listen to podcasts on my commute--and it's easy to run out over the course of a week. So, I listen to all the podcasts. I used to listen to conservative talk radio on my commute and it's so much nicer to roll your eyes and shake your head at misinformation on a topic that's as trivial as video games instead of, say, healthcare, or the marital rights of homosexuals.

Pete had no hand in that horrible episode. That was all me and...Greg? CJ? It was one of those two. My brain has purged any memory of that show for my own good.

Pretty sure I was not on that episode. Either I wasn't on it or I have completely blocked it out of my memory. One of those.

The Doddcast records late at night and Pete/Rich are in the same timezone so it's easy to avoid the noise of children. None of us are in the same timezone, which makes it more challenging.
