The Playstation Portables's "tough birth"

But Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi acknowledged in a Japanese press interview last month that those estimates were for playing a simple puzzle or card game with the screen dimmed, speakers turned off and wireless connectivity disabled. Turn on all the bells and whistles and load up a graphically complex racing game, and the battery will drain faster. Nintendo's market-leading Game Boy Advance SP, by contrast, runs for more than 10 hours between charges.

I don't remember that at all... I could have sworn those test were with the screens and speakers up.

What interview are they referencing?

It's true, Sony needs to get on the ball. Although the article mysteriously leaves out the more "flexible" aspects of the system (he says no music at launch and clearly means as UMD, but any user with even moderate understanding of how things work can get the thing to play hundreds of mp3s), Sony needs to be pushing out the information on the multimedia music/movie UMDs and quick so that those extras don't fall on deaf ears for consumers.

Of course battery issues are always at the heart of it, but I think in that aspect alone it'll have a rather negligible affect on how consumers view the PSP.

There are five games at launch, but aren't there like another ten coming out four days later? That's hardly a small line up of games for a launch system.

A part of me sees the potential in the PSP as being this kick ass portable multimedia monster for movies, music and some nice games, but another part of me wants nothing to do with it. I don't know why.

21+ games before the end of December.

How come we STILL don't have battery life reports from Lik-Sang or elsewhere? Even if it were jusy MP3 playing battery life, or something...

After doing some research on the battery life, features, specs, and potential of the PSP, I'm gonna pick one of those badboys up at launch for my fiance *cough*.

Does anyone have the battery life on the games like RRV?

RRV isn't out yet (besides demo stations) , wait a couple days. I guarantee there will be tons of impressions, including some from me.

The Sony representative said "entertainment software of an entirely new category mixing game, music and video on a single UMD" disc, will be available next spring.

That sounds fucking awesome to me. Have the movie and the soundtrack on one UMD + the game. :)

While the PSP game roster is sure to grow--with dozens of titles in the works by Sony and third-party publishers--promised music and video support is less clear. As of yet, no music or movie studios, including the major ones owned by Sony, have announced plans to release content on the new Universal Media Disc (UMD) optical media format the PSP will use.

But this has me worried. Hopefully major movie and music studios will catch on. : /
