The points at which certain Games become self-evidently GENIUS.

...or very close to genius. Let me put it another way:

POINTS AT WHICH CERTAIN GAMES BECOME SELF-EVIDENTLY GENIUS
aka when you realised a given game rocked...
aka how people can give great games a chance.

I was demoing Resident Evil 4 for someone the other day, and I realised how long its been since I popped it in. Its probably because I imported the game from the US. Playing it means I have to inconvenience myself by running it with freeloader. I've had it since February, I know full well its fucking incredible, but I still haven't really completed it. I have a backlog of games that I can't seem to get rid of: RE4, MP2:E, Baten Kaitos, Haunting Ground (which someone has let out to me recently), God of War and soon Shadow of the Collossus. As I'm utterly out-of-pocket until the end of November, I figure now should be a great time to crack on with it all.

---

Anyway, back to RE4 for a minute. There I am, demoing it for a friend: I got as far as just before the Castle sequence again and remembered all the cool cool shit I still have ahead of me. My friend still hadn't seen the coolest parts of the game, and probably never will! I don't know if he was impressed by what he'd already seen that night, but I wasn't satisfied with my showing. Because I remember not being all that impressed myself initially... the hype had been so great that even amazing graphics and the fact that tank controls actually work in the new viewpoint... it just wasn't really enough. It wasn't until around this point in the game that I started to love it myself! -- ie story elements relating to Sadler, Luis and others etc, the switch to night, the ogre(s), the lifts, the castle, scary blind dudes, midget Salazar, and so on.

The atmosphere is fucking unreal, I really should have been playing this game more often. The thing is - I've always found the game hard to persevere through - because basically I buy things before I finish the games I already own. Freeloader doesn't help matters. Neither does having to attend University or work, but needs must y'know?

Would other people be just as prone as I was to putting the game down? Would they do so before they had a chance to bask in its warm glow of genius? What about other games?

---

Another instance of a game not clicking with people until a certain point, would be relating to Metroid Prime. I leant it out to a friend, and he returned it to me unconvinced. I knew he liked Zelda n' stuff, so I assured him he might actually dig-it if he gave it a chance (I figure theyre similar with regards the adventure element). I leant him it again. And sure enough, I was right. He overcame issues with the controls and realised how polished and brilliant the whole thing really is. Thats not the first time I've heard of that happening!

THE KEY POINTS IN YOUR FAVOURITE VIDEOGAMES

I just have to wonder really. How many people never get to that crucial point in a game? The point where everything falls into place as an entertaining and cohesive experience... And what would you say that point *is* or was in your favourite games? Or alternatively - who bought these games that everyone raves about, or got to the part that everyone fapped over - and still didn't get all the fuss?

ie. for me, I'd say:

• The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Forsaken fortress. Failing that try out Dragonroost Island dungeon. If you don't enjoy how slick it all looks and how cool swinging about the dungeon's boss then get yourself to Gods Tower... finishing this will get you below The Great Sea - albeit in a limited sense. If you don't dig that (and I think thats a hard thing for a Zelda fan to say) then... ah well, [/self]

• Metroid Prime
Space Station Escape Sequence / Landing on Tallon IV. If the controls or situation hasn't sat right with you at this point, you really do need to give it more time. Roam the area more, enjoy one or two boss battles and basically give the game until Phendrena Drifts or Magmoor Caverns.

• Resident Evil
You haven't seen this game until you've seen your first Hunter imo. Persevere until this is so. Then pee your pants.

• Resident Evil 4
When you first get control in first-meets-third-person. If you're still not impressed, see: First ogre battle / House under seige with Luis Sera and Ashley Graham. MAF mentioned the boat battle, that too is fucking awesome. It gets even better. Don't pee your pants.

• Killer 7
Beat the first couple of chapters, and if you arent ushered on by the urge to see what weird thing happens next, theres little hope.

• Metal Gear Solid 3
At least rendevouz with Sokolov, meet 'Adam' and generally complete virtuous mission and start Operation Snake Eater. Even at that point, you've only just begun one of the finest games this generation.

• Beyond Good & Evil
Leave Hyllis... ideally get to the point where Jade joins IRIS and becomes a photographer / reporter

Do chime in..

The part in the first Sly Cooper (the only good sly cooper) where you are are approaching the treasure in that early level thats elevated on that center platform and there's lasers n rotating shit n whatever I cant describe but its cool.

And all the MMZ games rock when you slice your first boss in half. Thats awesome.

And that ogre battle didnt even last 3 seconds. I Shot him with a bazooka in the crotch and he died. I think the lake fight was the best so far.

Majora's Mask - after the first 3 days. My jaw was permanently wired open and not from the graphics but from the gameplay/story element they throw at you right at that moment.

Rayman 2:

The level where everything just starts falling apart. Pure platform genius

F-Zero GX -- When I got good enough to compete with others at Time Attack, I realized what an absolutely monumental achievement the game is. @#*%ing impeccable control system.

The first time going into Hyrule field in OOT
Playing as 8-bit Mario in Super Mario RPG

Plenty others, but these popped into my mind

Dog's Life, when you find out you can poop on command, and if you do it on a hill, the poop will roll all the way to the bottom. :lol

Metal Gear Solid 3, after going through nearly 2 hours, only to realize that you just only went past the game's introduction sequences and right into the opening James Bond-style title and credits.

You love that part, huh?

I really don't know..if I like a game a lot, I tend to forget when it clicked. :/

It's pretty much a symbol for my entire gaming hobby, yeah :)

Agreed. It had been a great game, and one I would highly recomend to anyone already, but when you get to that level I was just blown away. It was the difference between being a good game for its time, to being a classic that should be remembered for many generations to come.

Oh man. I agree.

The minute I started playing Super Mario 64.
The snow level in Goldeneye.
The second I heard Hell March when playing Red Alert.
When I finally learned by heart all of Kilik's moves in Soul Calibur.
The sunken temple sequence in Wind Waker.
The boat sequence in Half-Life 2.

Ico: When you get to the giant mirrors

Grand Theft Auto 3: The first time I caused a multi-car backlog and then caused them to explode chain-reaction style.

Dungeon Master: Either when I realized that I coudl close doors on monsters, or when I realized that the whole thing was 3D-accurate.

Nethack: When three @'s wandered into a room with me, and turned out to be Moe, Curly and Larry. "Moe pokes Curly in the eye. Larry throws a cream pie. He hits!" Then they wandered out a side door. I have never seen this happen again.

SMB3: Flying for the first time. It was amazing to by flying in a Mario game.

SMB1: 1:2, realizing I could jump into the part of the screen where the score was, and run along the top.

Oh, and PSO from the title screen, on. Anything that can be so repetitive but still get me to plunge into buying like 40 different versions and spend 1000 hrs on it, has to do something right.

Gunstar Heroes: the Seven Force fight

Ikaruga: the second level

ZOE2: the battle against the V2

BOFDQ: when you realize that there's no way you have enough D-gauge to beat the game

Zelda: LTTP
- First time visiting the Dark World

Super Mario 3
- the Giant world
- getting the hammer suit

Zelda: OOT - too many points... but here's a few:
- watching your first sunset in hyrule field
- the water temple.. especially the shadow link battle
- final battle with GANON

Metal Gear Solid
- the cutscene with the heart attack (rumble) sequence

Metroid Prime
- Meta Ridley

Baldurs Gate II
When you escape from Irenicus' dungeon and start to explore Athkatla and its surroundings

Diablo
When you get your first uber item

Planescape Torment
The encounter with Ravel

Playing Thief: The Dark Project. The first time you hide in the shadows as guards walk by without noticing you, and it dawns on you what the whole stealth thing was all about.

(When this game game out, it was a new thing, and they were calling it a First Person Sneaker)

I remember that. Boy, what a feeling!

Super Metroid:
The title screen (seriously, it's the most ominous, mysterious title screen ever)

Agreed. I actually felt the exact same way about Metroid Prime.

When you realise this isn't mandatory.
Legend%20of%20Zelda,%20The.png

Then you try to speed run through the game in it's second quest without any emulator aid. Pure genius.

That and also seeing speedruns of pretty much any Metroid game. Many ways of wowing you in those games.

Edit: misspelled something, also

When you realise you can launch explosive arrows in Link's Awakening.

Tetrisphere

The moment I realized I was glued to the TV for hours listening to the techno pulsing music, moving and dropping those pieces where I didn't even really "think" about it anymore.

I love that game. Bought a used N64 just to get it back too.

Fallout - I have mentioned this moment numerous times in various threads, but it fits with this topic. Taking down Shady Sands at FIRST LEVEL was just insane.

Starsiege: Tribes - A game of two well-organized, experienced tribes is subline.

Diablo - I have been clicking and killing things for 30 hours, and it's still fun!

Nethack - wtf my dog fell into a hole :(

The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Solving a puzzle by doing nothing? Awesome.

Mario 64: soon as you get to play with mario's face on the title screen.

Goldeneye: first time you play multiplayer and the snow level

Street Fighter: holy shit how did i just shoot that fireball?

RE4: the villagers all coming to attack you in the first village

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Co-op: Being next to a friend while you're both behind 2 enemies who have no clue you're there. Counting to 3 and popping both guards in the head simultaneously only to watch the ragdoll physics take their course. GENIUS.

Not even. When it said 'Metroid 3' in small red letters on the pitch-black screen in that ominous music we all know and love. That moment literally screamed 'I am a badass game. Play me and love me forever.'

If not by then or the title screen, the first Ridley fight would be the moment.

Final Fantasy VII when Aeris dies

not really

Fire Emblem PoR:
When Ike promotes to Lord class

Advance Wars:
when I was bombarded with so many info in the tutorial and realized how deep and complex the game was. I was like wow, fucking amazing.

Final Fantasy VI:
The begining with Terra, Biggs and Wedge walking toward Narshe with the opening credits.

Legend of Zelda OOT:
two words, Forest Temple. the game was genius since the opening cutscene, but I'll never forget that temple the music, the atmosphere the puzzles everything was so perfect.

Shadow of Colossus:
Colossus #5, one of the biggest "holy shit" in a game.

MGS3:
the ending

Metroid Prime:
Space Frigate :O

Earthbound/Mother 2:
when I first withdraw money from the ATM :lol I know it seems stupid but I found that so fucking cool at that time.

Katamari Damacy:
the first level nuff said.

Suikoden II
when the Castle reaches maximum capacity.

Ultima 7: You warp to Brittania. Your close friend Iolo is there, and asks you to investigate the murder scene in a nearby barn. You walk in to find a man who has been tied to stake sin the ground and literally had his torso ripped off.

Deus Ex: I picked up a crate of Boom, threw it at someone, and they exploded violently. The world was now my plaything.

can't think of any others right off, although I'm sure there are lots of others.

oh, I know!

Bushi Seiryuuden - My first "perfect" battle (as far under par as possible). The game had slowly given me the tools I needed to master it, and I had begun to do so without even realizing it until I ranked in the magatamas without taking a scratch.

Earthbound - Level grinding without actual going into battles. Genius.

Final Fantasy 6 - The ending. Every single objection I might have had to the game was wiped away in one single musical masterpiece.

Final Fantasy 7 - Not one actual event, but the gradual realization that the Final Fantasy games had entered a new age, in which villagers weren't just walking signposts, but actual people in a world that was both magical and oppressive and above all important to them.

Terranigma - Seeing the first "overworld". As well as the ending credits sequence.

Actraiser - The first city-building stage.

Legend of Mana - When I realized the game was a storybook. And in most of the stories, you aren't the main character - you're there to watch.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD USE SPOILER TAGS

Now if you'll excuse me i'll go cut myself because of reading that mgs 3 shit :(

Could have fooled me. If you liked that about FF7, then you'll LOVE the world and the population of Grandia 1.

Maybe I will. But I still think FF7 advanced the series in a way few credit it for.

I preferred to cast the quake spell repeatedly, forcing them to rebuild and earning precious EXP.

And then proceed to get your head chopped off. :lol

Even more 8-bit goodness:

Super Mario 3

When in 2 player alternating mode, pressing the button when the other player walks past you on the overworld puts you in a Mario Bros. battle screen and you can steal their items.. AWESOME!! =)

Zelda
Finding out there's a 2nd quest!

Kid Icarus
Turning into an eggplant. Over and over again... Frustratingly cool

SotC = Third Boss

SMB = First Gomba

Super Metroid = Ship lands and its raining

GTA3 = Right off the bat, I drove and the door hadn't closed yet, I slowed down and he closed it. Running over the first person was cool too.

Super Mario 64 = as soon as you enter the castle

RE4 = When you first realize the village is against you

KOTOR = First planet you land on

WCW World tour (was that the aki one) = First time someone bled (20 seconds into the first match)

Suoer Mario Bros 3 = Racoon tail in the first stage

Zelda = First screen

OOT = The scene where you're about to cross the little bridge to enter hyrule field for the first time and Saria is waiting for you

The moment the Pelican drops you off on the island of the Silent Cartographer

3ed...But the extasis is when you are getting out of the Silent Cartographer level (Rock anthem for saving the world starts playing while you're trying to get out) :)

for me it was:

Halo CE: Holy shit! a console FPS with excellent controls! I'm freaking eating my PC fanboy words here!, when you land at Halo, the last scene, everytime that I feel overwhelmed because the attack of the enemy and your skill at combat really counted (when 343 leaves you at some entrance an the flood starts appearing in mass).

In short words I've never played any other game with so many high moments like Halo, everything was epic from start to finish.

How the f*cked up the sequel?, that's something that I will never know, In fact I never thought about that possibility before the realease of H2.

KoTor: AM I REVAN? WOW!!!! :O that really shocked me

UT: KILLING SPREE!

PGR2: So this is how you make kudos?

Warioware: I don't know why but I can't stop playing this very simple games for some reason

Kirby Air Ride: at the 60th hour
