...or very close to genius. Let me put it another way:
POINTS AT WHICH CERTAIN GAMES BECOME SELF-EVIDENTLY GENIUS
aka when you realised a given game rocked...
aka how people can give great games a chance.
I was demoing Resident Evil 4 for someone the other day, and I realised how long its been since I popped it in. Its probably because I imported the game from the US. Playing it means I have to inconvenience myself by running it with freeloader. I've had it since February, I know full well its fucking incredible, but I still haven't really completed it. I have a backlog of games that I can't seem to get rid of: RE4, MP2:E, Baten Kaitos, Haunting Ground (which someone has let out to me recently), God of War and soon Shadow of the Collossus. As I'm utterly out-of-pocket until the end of November, I figure now should be a great time to crack on with it all.

Anyway, back to RE4 for a minute. There I am, demoing it for a friend: I got as far as just before the Castle sequence again and remembered all the cool cool shit I still have ahead of me. My friend still hadn't seen the coolest parts of the game, and probably never will! I don't know if he was impressed by what he'd already seen that night, but I wasn't satisfied with my showing. Because I remember not being all that impressed myself initially... the hype had been so great that even amazing graphics and the fact that tank controls actually work in the new viewpoint... it just wasn't really enough. It wasn't until around this point in the game that I started to love it myself! -- ie story elements relating to Sadler, Luis and others etc, the switch to night, the ogre(s), the lifts, the castle, scary blind dudes, midget Salazar, and so on.
The atmosphere is fucking unreal, I really should have been playing this game more often. The thing is - I've always found the game hard to persevere through - because basically I buy things before I finish the games I already own. Freeloader doesn't help matters. Neither does having to attend University or work, but needs must y'know?
Would other people be just as prone as I was to putting the game down? Would they do so before they had a chance to bask in its warm glow of genius? What about other games?

Another instance of a game not clicking with people until a certain point, would be relating to Metroid Prime. I leant it out to a friend, and he returned it to me unconvinced. I knew he liked Zelda n' stuff, so I assured him he might actually dig-it if he gave it a chance (I figure theyre similar with regards the adventure element). I leant him it again. And sure enough, I was right. He overcame issues with the controls and realised how polished and brilliant the whole thing really is. Thats not the first time I've heard of that happening!

THE KEY POINTS IN YOUR FAVOURITE VIDEOGAMES
I just have to wonder really. How many people never get to that crucial point in a game? The point where everything falls into place as an entertaining and cohesive experience... And what would you say that point *is* or was in your favourite games? Or alternatively - who bought these games that everyone raves about, or got to the part that everyone fapped over - and still didn't get all the fuss?
ie. for me, I'd say:
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Forsaken fortress. Failing that try out Dragonroost Island dungeon. If you don't enjoy how slick it all looks and how cool swinging about the dungeon's boss then get yourself to Gods Tower... finishing this will get you below The Great Sea - albeit in a limited sense. If you don't dig that (and I think thats a hard thing for a Zelda fan to say) then... ah well, [/self]
Metroid Prime
Space Station Escape Sequence / Landing on Tallon IV. If the controls or situation hasn't sat right with you at this point, you really do need to give it more time. Roam the area more, enjoy one or two boss battles and basically give the game until Phendrena Drifts or Magmoor Caverns.
Resident Evil
You haven't seen this game until you've seen your first Hunter imo. Persevere until this is so. Then pee your pants.
Resident Evil 4
When you first get control in first-meets-third-person. If you're still not impressed, see: First ogre battle / House under seige with Luis Sera and Ashley Graham. MAF mentioned the boat battle, that too is fucking awesome. It gets even better. Don't pee your pants.
Killer 7
Beat the first couple of chapters, and if you arent ushered on by the urge to see what weird thing happens next, theres little hope.
Metal Gear Solid 3
At least rendevouz with Sokolov, meet 'Adam' and generally complete virtuous mission and start Operation Snake Eater. Even at that point, you've only just begun one of the finest games this generation.
Beyond Good & Evil
Leave Hyllis... ideally get to the point where Jade joins IRIS and becomes a photographer / reporter
Do chime in..
