[Big One]

So I just completed the entirety of this series due to request from a friend who is a big fan of the show.

It was pretty good! Good animation, downright hilarious, funny characters, and good cartoon overall.

I didn't really feel motivated outside of those realms, however.

Why is this one of the most polarizing shows of all time? People seem to either love it so much that they hype background characters, create fan material, and jack off to pony characters that they usually wouldn't jack off to; or they despise it with a visceral, illogical hatred.

I don't get this, either one. Can't this show just be a great cartoon?

What exactly motivates people to either extreme spectrum? That's all the reactions I see from this.

Why does a show get this much of a reaction from both sides, when other shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, etc. all are recognized as being fantastic cartoon series yet don't get a similar love and hatred?

Maybe it's because the show is for little girls I guess.

most of the hate is thanks to the fans posting it all over neogaf when the show was released. that and lots of avatars as well. guess some neogaf members got overwhelmed and then ended up hating it.

I suspect that it might have something to do with the ponies themselves being posted on the internet with wild abandon, regardless of relevance. Its not a problem on GAF, but I've seen a number of forums in which threads were consumed by pony stuff.

That kind of thing can obviously be irritating, and can result in negative responses to just reading and seeing references to the damn things. It probably puts people off actually wanting to watch an episode.

Imagine if Warhammer 40k fans started posting images of Space Marines and Imperial Terminators in threads and discussions that had no relevance to the images, under the justification of meme. It would surely result in negative responses to the awesomeness that are Space Marines, and would probably disuade people from wanting to know any more about this whole Imperium of Man business. People could even become quite hostile to the various random images of The God Emperor's of Man's finest.

And now I've made it relevant I can post the image.

I watched a bunch of episodes trying to find the supposed "It's like Powerpuff Girls" quality but it's a pretty flat show nowhere near that level. And then there was that episode that teaches that skepticism is a bad thing.

That and the fact that it's a cartoon show meant for little girls about colorful ponies and rainbows. It has a sort of compounding effect and the hate just explodes out.
