WORLD EXCLUSIVE: MOLYNEUX REVEALS PROJECT DIMITRI...

Lionhead overlord speaks about Dimitri for the first time...

10:17 You've got to love Peter Molyneux, not only for the games he makes, but the ambition and vision he brings to the industry as a whole.

During the course of a very agreeable interview yesterday in which we discussed latest project The Movies (more on that later in the week), Molyneux revealed to C&VG the very first details on Lionhead's newest outing Project Dimitri.

Nothing has previously been known about the game, other than a mysterious logo which appeared on the official Lionhead site, but wrapping up the interview, Molyneux was clearly in the mood to unburden, much to the horror of his PR staff.

Concluding our talk with: "We're doing lots of Fable stuff at the moment, lots of Black & White 2 stuff, lots of Movies stuff ...and we've also got this project called Dimitri, which I can now give you a tiny bit more detail on."

"I can tell you what the game's about ...would you like to know what the game's about?" Of course we would...

"It's a game about [pause for dramatic drum roll] ...you. It allows anyone who plays the game to relive their life, their entire individual life. That's a pretty ambitious concept." While our jaw dropped to the floor, Lionhead PR hastily intervened with the effect of a virtual gagging order.

So there we have it, first details on Dimitri and obviously you can't say the concept lacks ambition. If we have to speculate further we'd probably say it would be at least a PC title given Lionhead's development preferences, and given production timescales if it did appear on console, it would now have to be next generation, probably Xbox 2.

But that's all we know for the moment. Dimitri a game which lets you relive your entire life. Now just how is that going to work?

That's amazing. So I can play myself playing myself playing myself playing myself playing myself..... :D

Let the hype begin!

Dimitri. This time with growing trees. :D

Remeber how amazing Fable was supposed to be?

Yeah...

it was.

It was amazing for the amount of loading that the was required to sustain this continuous living universe.

Ok, it didn't feature all the stuff that were hyped, but still was far better than 99% of the games released last year.

no. Just NO.

What ambition and vision? Isn't it always the same idea he comes up with? It's starting to get boring...

People like to rag on Molyneux but he really doesn't deserve it. He's passionate about games in general and about his games in particular. I would much rather have someone like him talking with enthusiasm about things he hopes to achieve than the PR-muzzled crap that we're gifted in press releases every day.

I also really don't get the Fable hate. It seems a lot of people don't like the game because it's not what they thought it was going to be. How about playing the game and enjoying it for what it is.

He only said a few words about Dimitri, but it's not enough to get an idea of what's gonna happen with it...so I'm not decided on it yet. Could be a pretty amazing breakthrough in AI, or a Lionhead version of The Sims.

B&W2, B.C., The Movies, and Fable 2...these are the games I'm interested in from them.

Well, it's like somebody promised to buy a Subaru WRX STI for you and then you get a Beetle instead. =\

I love how so damn fucking many of the people hating Peter in all these threads are either system fanboys or people who never gave a shit about him or his games.

He has learned from B&W and Fable PR fiascos, most of the hype will come from unprofessional magazines and website. Cut the BS and analyze his words. He tells nothing and CVG is already throwing a party.

I spent years following the development of and anticipating the greatest, most revolutionary RPG if not GAME ever. What hit store shelves was almost a joke in comparison. After all the years of hype, I just couldn't appreciate what it ended up being. It's not so much that the game was bad, but a huge letdown.

I bought Black and White when it launched, and then, like some poor battered wife who keeps coming back for more, I bought an Xbox for Fable. I think I deserve to indicriminately hate on Molyneux. The way I see it, he's going to come out in about 3 years and say that as the original concept of "living your own life" took up too many CPU cycles, they've decided to make a (revolutionary) orange juicing simulator.

stop slapping that phrase system fanboys around. Pathetic. His games aren't great and that's that. Considering he's been presented as the father/god of UK game development;

BNW was buggy as hell and repetive as well

FABLE was okay but not great and that's it biggest problem. Compromised engine, no real childhood/growth factor/ stupid loading / fucking rubbish emergent gameplay in the fable world which really has NO FUCKING CONSEQUENCES. Kill lots of villagers, come by some time later and no one remembers. Good while it lasted but then so is junk food.

He's just fucking shit and until he makes a game that isn't broken or filled on broken promises, we'll see. Mayb Fable 1.5 Pc will actually make the game.

Maybe you should make a forum search on Molyneux. I forgot, I am talking with Odnetnin.

BTW Fable was NOT Molyneux's game, B&W was.

I've been burned by Molyneux too many times to get hyped. I followed Fable and Black and White religiously through their developments sucking up all the info I could and was so very disapointed in both cases. (and for those of you who liked fable i'm not having a go at you....but i followed it from start to finish and the end product was so very much worse than all the provoked expectations.....i still liked it but it was nothing like it promised to be)

That being said, I won't hate on the games if they actually turn out good. I've allways thought that the ideas behind Peter M's games were great....but the execution of the ideas has turned out bad.

Molyneux's really taking the piss now. King of (unfounded) hype. He knows the images that are put into peoples' heads when he starts talking in such terms, but then, of course, he doesn't elaborate on the nitty gritty detail that would bring is concept halting back to reality.

I thought he said he WOULDN'T be doing this again after Fable? Or did he just apologise for that and make no promises as to future hype-wagons that he'd generate? He's trying to play people for fools, and he's being blatant about it by admitting that he does it, without stopping it :lol No wonder his PR people were trying furiously to shut him up - probably not because there's much to hide in terms of the game, but because simply, he's talking out of his ass.

At least when Will Wright starts getting "ambitious", he shows you the game and the stuff he's talking about at the same time, it's scope and mechanic(s), so you can filter his grand-talk through the reality he presents in the game. That's far more palletable than Molyneux's style.

He always bites off more than he can chew. See I think the full Fable vision could have worked...but not during this generation. Sounds like he is at it again.

Molyneux didn't design it, the Carter Bros did. Molyneux had an exec producer style role and his name helped market it. I loved the game personally. Black and White can fuck right off though.

The Molyneaux hate around here is absolutely ridiculous but I suppose its expected when coming from people like Odnetnin. It's in his Nintendo contract.

Anyway, I came across this Dimitri concept painting on Gamasutra several months ago but didn't see a reason to post it until now. It doesn't tell us much but it's better than nothing.

B&W sucked. Fable is mediocrity defined, Movies aint anything special. BUT DIMITRI WILL LET ME LIVE MY WHOLE LIFE!

Will Wright >>>>>>>>> Molyneux.

Yes I know this is a bit of a derailment but damn am I looking foward to Spore!

The GDC demo was fantastic and the technology behind the game was such a novel and pioneering concept.

All these years of Sims products can finally be atoned for, Will Wright is forgiven.

He's just teasing with Dimitri. He loves to do that. I would think the resources at Lionhead are pretty much tied up at the moment. Sure there might be a couple of guys working on the concept, but there is hardly a team working on it. Maybe 2010... :D

Molyneux ain't done dick since Dungeon Keeper :lol

I'll second that notion. :D

I was disappointed with Fable cuz I thought it would be more of an RPG/puzzle solver, rather than a straight-up hack and slash. The customization was fairly cool, but the fact that there wasn't much of a story (and your actions had seemingly little effect on it), the quests were super linear, the game was short, the art was terrible, the framerate choked countless times, means I hated it. Plus there were quite a few good REAL RPGs in 2004. One positive was that the music was pretty good, reminded me of a Tim Burton movie...

Fable has to be the most hated game ever on these boards...
