The PS5 disc drive stock situation is embarrassing

There is no conspiracy, they want people to buy digital games over physical games - they get more money and consumers can't sell them.
No they don't. Somebody can pay £80 more to some nobody, right now, and foil this "more money" plan.
I love idea of "there was ton of disc drives, why didn't you buy one?"
The day Cerny announced console (the day we knew for the first time about only DE) i checked for disc drives where I live - no disc drives at retail, only overpriced ones on Allegro (works like ebay).
I couldn't care less if you bought one or not in Poland when you checked late. I'm just saying that Slim users were not "prevented" from easily getting a disc drive to drive your digital conspiracy idea. They were in supply prior to the spike in demand due to Pro. The Pro being DE only pushed demand high and like almost every other PS accessory (Portal, Charging Dock, PSVR2 adaptor, Etc) there were stock issues near launch due to demand. But of course the disc drive being in high demand at the moment is some crazy conspiracy, sure, sure. And when it comes back into supply in Feb/March Sony have given up on their digital evil plans, yes?

They would have far more to lose than gain in the era of backwards compatibility and people carrying their entire libraries across generations. Again, some really hot takes in here.

What? Alot of people tell me console gamers won't go to pc either way so what the possible downside for Sony if that's actually the case (i don't think its the case tho).

They were making Pro consoles for months now, why not make disc drives at the same time? They were dumb enough to think no one would want one?

Step by step pushing some of those people to digital only until more and more accept their shitty fate. You think a company like Sony need six month to meet demand on a cheap item that's made for 10 bucks is insanity on its own.

I also couldn't get a portal for several months. What's the latest conspiracy theory about that?

I was joking. But only slightly. I honestly don't think Sony wants us to keep physical media alive, or else they would've included the disc drive. Just like Microsoft, they want to push us into a digital only future. Makes sense for them but not for me as a consumer and collector.

I’m not sure how it’s outside of the UK but it’s a joke over here.

Sony have just released their premium console for £700 and it’s impossible to find a PS5 disc drive instock anywhere.

Some stores haven’t had stock in weeks.

The only way to get one now is by paying like £180 off Ebay when the RRP is £100.

Can’t believe this wasn’t sorted before launch.

It’s bad enough the Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive to begin but this is something else.
You should have bought one back in early September like I did. Writing was on the wall what was going to happen there.

They might prefer people to go digital for obvious reasons, but it's not like they don't want them to keep buying stuff and being in their ecosystem. To me the separate drive seem more like a manufacturing boon rather than an attempt to force people into digital. It's far easier to manufacture two SKUs (slim/pro) and then have a separate accessory that works with all consoles instead of manufacturing 4 different ones. The existing drive might even be compatible with the PS6 for all we know which would be great for both Sony and consumers that already own it.

Also the dualsense edge stick modules have been out of stock for months
Yeah because why would one be needed? It’s a fucking 250 dollar controller?
The warranty on this piece of shit is 2 years in Europe

There’s no excuse for Sony here. The lack of communication clearly shows they no longer prioritize keeping players engaged. It feels like they’re slowly conditioning people to accept a lesser experience as PlayStation gamers. Their poor communication around exclusives and gradual shifts in policy seem aimed at changing players' perspectives to take advantage of them. Sony post-2020 just isn’t the same. Once this generation ends, I’m done with their ecosystem—PC and Switch are the way to go.
Thank you for being so concerned for us Ponies. I'm so grateful ♥️

Well, maybe the real Pro console was always the PS5 disc drive edition. *hugs my PS5 DDE and gives it a little kiss on its forehead*

Dualshock 4 isnt working on the ps5 and you think there might be a chance for the drive to work on the ps6 🤣

There is a simple solution, re-buy all of your disc games digitally at full price in PSN store. Make Sony happy. /s

Amen Brother. Keep on spreading the truth about those M***********s.

Here's my situation. I've ordered from two different retailers. One order was made on 30th of september the other on 18th of october.

Neither of them was able to deliver a drive for the release.

I checked two retail stores at release.
Müller and Saturn. Both of them got no disc drive for release. Called Media Markt and they told me not a single disc drive for release.

If you can't provide a single disc drive for release there's definitely Something wrong. I've never experienced such a crappy launch.

Apparently I should receive the drive I ordered on september 30th sometime in november.
(According to the dealer I should actually receive it in early november)

I have one right now and I'm using it. It's working on a PS5 to play all your PS4 games, probably a bad example. Unless they change to a more advanced drive (if there is anything new in BD tech by then) then there's a chance it will.

Sony aren't that great in predicting demand in general as their history with other PS5 accessories show (Ones you don't have a conspiracy theory for I'm guessing). I think this is due to risk aversion driven by their prior low margins if I were to guess. If you haven't been paying attention though this is made a lot worse by scalpers buying up stock intended for the consumer. Scalpers are charging 80% margins on these products by buying up all stock and creating scarcity with them as the only supplier. They are playing the market and PS doesn't benefit from it.

Step by step pushing some of those people to digital only until more and more accept their shitty fate. You think a company like Sony need six month to meet demand on a cheap item that's made for 10 bucks is insanity on its own.

So you think they're giving up a 90% margin, £90 profit, from selling a disc drive to drive profits from where for just 3-4 months of this supply/demand deficit? A very small amount of people switching from physical to digital?

What percentage of physical software sales would pro users who can't get a drive in that short period make with them buying digital vs physical? You think this outweighs the existing owners who are looking to upgrade to pro? On the contrary, if anything it would prevent existing PS5 owners with a physical library from buying higher margin products from them like the PS5 Pro or the disc drive itself during a more important product launch. Then supply and demand would be back to normal anyway and they can buy physical again and you're back to whatever you think it is they're making prior to this evil gnome underpants plan.

Lol,

£700 for Consoles
£200 for Joy Pads
£100 for Disc Drives

No conspiracy shortages here, just a company who sees a bunch of FOMO suckers coming a mile off and will still be there however long it takes for manufacturing capacity to catch up with us all, me included.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Likely to give the PS fans an illusion of choice, as they can easily artificial constrain the supply of the drive to further push the fanbase to digital.
going to shamelessly quote myself from last year.

Drives being out of stock means people are buying them, scalpers are scalping them etc. So they're in very high demand, which makes physical media pretty safe for at least one more generation.
You know Sony could have just added it in if they really felt the way you do. They don’t.

Not to rub it in, but I ordered one last week and received it the exact same day...

But it was in the good ol' US of A.

The problem with those is not availability from Sony. You can find a ton of stick modules and disc drives for sale. As far as Sony is concerned, they're hitting their sales targets with those. Problem is they're all for sale on Ebay from people who set up bots to buy them.

Good news is Sony(and Nintendo) knows that's a problem, and it looks like they're working on fixing it. But it's not an easy fix.

That literially is the problem...

When you make so few of a product and scalpers buy it, they can set the price for it.

Stick Modules on Playstation Direct: £19.99 - PS Direct Stick Modules (UNAVAILABLE) Also unavailable on Amazon, Game, Argos.
Stick Modules on eBay: Average Price I'm seeing is around £50
The only store I could find them close to the Direct price is at CeX, but even their stock is so low, they only have 8 Stick Modules for sale in the ENTIRE UK for £35 each.

Disc Drive on Playstation Direct: £99.99 - PS Direct Disc Drive (UNAVAILABLE) Also unavailable on Amazon, Game, Argos.
Disc Drive on eBay: Going from around £150 to £180
It's availabe at CeX for a small price of... £170.

Now, I'm sure you could do this with other countries in EU and get similar results, but this is a Sony problem, ESPECIALLY the stick modules. It's ridiculous that it takes months for them to restock them and at a very low stock.

I bought one a few weeks ago. It’s weird that Sony didn’t realize that the same enthusiasts who would buy a PS5 Pro also want their system to be fully set up.

Sony wants you to buy thier games digitally more than physically which make me fear that they gonna pull the same crap with PS6.

At least I can easily ignore Pro because it’s not really new system, I won’t miss out on games if I don’t get Pro.

With PS6 is different story, I hope they don't fucking do this again.

They launch PS6 digital only, and I'm out.

PC all the way if that happens (owner of all PS systems through the years)

Hold up, you think Sony wants you to be able to buy one of those disc drives? Man they'll make way more on digital games than that little hardware build markup. Just go digital and thank Sony the next time you buy a house and don't have to move massive boxes of plastic cases.

The reason behind this seems to be their push to drive up revenue by selling more of their poorly made controllers. Having limited stock on the “solution” to a badly designed product is incredibly frustrating. I’ve had three controllers this generation alone with stick drift issues. Imagine buying an overpriced pro controller just to avoid replacing the whole controller repeatedly, only to find that the solution they promised isn’t even available. At this point, it feels almost like robbery.
Compared to other pro controllers, DS Edge is easily the most complicated to manufacture. Not a single part is interchangeable with a regular DS. Furthermore, because of those stick modules, Edge has less functionality (ie 4 back paddles) than pretty much every other pro controller out there so Sony probably lost a good chunk of potential customers right there.

Its absolutely retarded to think that Sony would go through all that trouble to make the Edge with removable stick modules only to purposefully not sell them. It would have been far easier and more profitable to just make a pro controller like how everyone else does it which is to use a regular DS as a base and slap 4 back paddles on there.

These conspiracy theories are wild af :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

A pro model that requires another device to run games is flat-out ridiculous.

Fuck all the cunts that thought this was a great idea, starting with Hermen.
On the other hand, it's PRO enough that you can replace the drive with other one once this breaks.
So the coin has 2 sides

Spaghetti-land here :
Called my local GameStop earlier about the disc drive add-on and they told me that they're absolutely not expecting any new deliveries from Sony before December...

Make of it what you will...

PS : bolded part = the guy actually gasped when telling me that 😁
