When I come to the GAF I hear a lot of voices that sound much younger than mine. Are there any other soon-to-be-middle-aged gamers out there? People who remember when the only game console was wood panelled? And if so, why aren't you speaking up?

27 now, but that's all just a state of mind. I still like Hello Kitty, sugar, and underaged girls, so... yeah!

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
2 months of my 20s left! :(

Goddamnit... where the hell did 25 to 29 go???? it was gone in a flash.

Here's some great, free advice for you guys:

Buy as much Critical Illness insurance as you can get, you're still young enough to get a good policy for cheap (I recommend getting a 20 pay, paid up policy).

Start planning your retirement now, and making it a priority. You'll thank yourself when you're 55+

I have too many clients in their 40's and 50's who will never reach their dream retirement because they just started too damn late. Don't let it happen to you.

That's good advice.

My wife and I haven't had kids yet, so we can still save a little money. We're having her father invest money into the stock market (my wife's parents live completely off of the interest he accrues) and we're also looking into insurance policies.

Damn, where am I getting the money for games?!

Insurance is tricky but has lots of great benefits. such as creditor protection (if you go bankrupt the money in the policy is usually safe), and the ability to grow the money tax sheltered inside of the policy.

Segregated funds have the same advantages.

If your wife's father is in his 50's, you might want to consider moving him into Seg funds.

Segregated funds have the following advantages:

1. They have that creditor proofing
2. If the investor dies, the original capital is guaranteed
3. If the investor dies, the money is paid to beneficiaries as insurance, not investment proceeds, which makes them immune to probate and executor fees, which can add up to 6 to 9% in some jurisdictions.

Of course, if he has a large portfolio (several million) and is playing directly with individual securities, the seg fund option might not seem as attractive. You'd want him to look into various trust arrangements.

My practice is in Ontario though so your local jurisdiction might do things a little differently. Always get professional advice from someone you trust.

31 here. I remember picking out the Atari out of the Sears Wish book before anyone even knew what the console was. It had 4 or 5 games for it (Asteroids and Space Invaders). Repeated the same thing with Nintendo's system out of the Sears wish book as well several years later ;). I often get a kick out of some of the folks on here talking to me as if they know what a good game is and what a good game isn't in way that they don't think I do. I've been playing them longer so I think I can make up my own mind and bring a little more exerience to the table than your typical poster here.

Being in your 30's rocks. You're not too old, but you're not so young that you don't have any money. I own a new F150 truck, building a house, and have a great girlfriend. Life couldn't be better. So getting old doesn't suck at all.

I think that's a more pressing problem than your age, personally. ;) :p

Unless we got voice-enabled posting and I missed it. :D

On-topic, I'm 26.4 years old...and it SUCKS. : / I told my sister once, I said "who would know if I just chopped a year or two off my age? It's not like anybody's gonna ask me for my ID." :D I think I'm gonna start doing that as I creep closer to the dreaded 3-0. :p

Thanks for the advice.

So, 'older' guys.....what's keeping you playing games? I play 25+ hours a week if I'm lucky. Have your gaming habits changed? If so, how? Do you feel that it's a change for the better? Do you think you'll still be pre-ordering the hot new title for the hot new system when you're 40?

Me, too. Come November, I'd be circling stuff in the Wish Book like a fiend.

I like the fact that some people confuse junior member status to mean I'm younger. That's awesome, especially when some 14 year old tries to tell me my business.

Agreed. I'm looking forward to my thirties. Fatherhood, a little money, someone with which to share it all.....yeah.

I'm 30, no complaints. Life is far better at 30 in most respects than it was at 25. And, oh yeah, 30 is FAR from "middle-aged." Sheesh. Are YOU planning to die at 60?

As for gaming...I have less and less time for it these days, so I can imagine that at some point, it will die off as a hobby. For now, though, it's a good time-waster when I have nothing better to do.

Maybe 30 is far from middle-aged in your family. Unfortunately, I'm looking at the possiblities of heart disease, skin cancer, prostate cancer, weak lungs (pneumonia when I was 20, damn near killed me), and premature liver and kidney failure. I've got uncles and cousins that just up and die. One minute, eating dinner and chatting with the missus, next minute, dead.

Male pattern baldness is just an added perk at this point.

Damn you and your good genes.

*looks at thread title* ...

I'm 33 - 34 next Monday. I still try and play games, but I have two little kids, so that makes it difficult, but I still try. Hopefully when my son gets older he'll be into video games, so I can save money from importing consoles for myself by giving them to him for Christmas/birthday!

And since my kids were born I feel a *lot* older. No free time, no money blah blah.

Its not how old you are, its how many responsiblities you have. Being 30-ish with no kids and lots of disposable income is great.

I reckon just buy property - it's more fun, and as soon as you've got more than one you're set for life. _b

26.5 in a week. I look 17, act 12, and feel 40+. I'm not pushing 30, but I'm getting close. Not much time left really, and lots I want to accomplish before then. I'm getting to the point now when I'm watching my age b/c I still hope to get into auto racing properly before 30. I figure that could buy me 5-15 years, depending on if my body holds up well like my dad's. He's like 55 now, and still in great shape, and we're like clones, so I hope so. But there are physical limitations you hit once you get to the big 30. The body's just not as resilient as it used to be. I can't expect to take bumps and bruises forever. PEACE.

Good luck with the auto racing thing. I know you are really into it.

Maybe you should move to Australia. Watching the Australian GT championship, everyones a middle-aged guy, racing around in Evos and R32s :)

28 is a few months away. Due to my work, I game a couple of hours a day. Currently, I'm into Crimson Skies... Sleeper hit, IMO.

I turned 40 a few weeks ago. Yesterday, I picked up my Nintendo DS with Super Mario 64 DS. I'm also playing Half-Life 2. My wife is addicted to FFXI.

I turned 30 back in May and spent a lot of time wandering around saying, "Wait, I'm how old? When the fuck did that happen?" Then I threw a big birthday party which made me feel a lot better, despite all the Logan's Run jokes.

Meanwhile, I continue to live in a college town and act like I'm still in my mid 20s.

I'm 32 going on 14. It's all in one's mind... my dad still seems like a kid to me. After 25, the years just fly by.

My gaming habits have changed over the years, but I think they're unconnected with my actual age.

Teen-- heavy into arcade games, mainly, and computer arcade-style/action games at home (Atari 800) and console (various pre-NES ones)

College, and a few years after-- still gaming on a computer, mainly. Started dipping into the console world a little with Lynx, NES, SNES, Genesis. By the end of the SNES/Genny era I do almost all my gaming on console again.

Heavy follower of games from 94-200?. Multiple system owner, lots of time and money spent. This is from late 20's to mid 30's.

Lately-- very casual. Post more on the off-topic forum, read more about games than play them, very busy life and I don't take too much time for gaming.

Very, very recently (last 5 weeks)-- newly a father. Almost zero game time so far.

AGE LET ME TOUCH YOU!

May 20 of this year my genetic fury pushed over the magazine rack of youth. At 30 I look and feel mostly the same as I did 8 years ago. Past that though the guy in the photos starts to look a little too fresh-faced and bushy. My wife looks ridiculously young for her age (also 30 - 5 days older than me) so when I grow a beard I look like a pedophile and that's good fun.

I may not play videogames when I'm 40 but I can always TYPE IN ALL CAPS 2 F33L young again.

also, venerability is a super-power. like intangability.
