[The Rare Canceled Game Art Thread]

And now we've got Chris Seavor telling us all about what Conker's Other Bad Day would have been.

I weep.

......and what's this: Other Bad Day, an overview !!?? It's actually quite funny, why didn't we make this again !!??

lolz, 'Harry's Potty Mouth' would have been a funny chapter..... I doubt we'd have got it through legal though, I hear JK's a bit of a cunt!

Hocus-Fucking-Pocus, Abra-Cunting-Cadabra...... If that's not BAFTA winning writing i don't what is ?

Turdtanic...Yep, a big ship hit's a giant, singing floating turd and sinks...... I defy anyone to say that's not got gameplay potential !!!

My god. Twitter feed of the year.

Captain K.Rool didn't even know Rare HAD an art staff

Well everything he worked on ended up in the dustbin of mismanagement, I'd be pissed too.

I just wonder what's going on there...with those comments from Thomas and Kirkhope.

What Microsoft has done to Rare over the years has pissed me off so much that I will no longer be buying any products from Microsoft. My money now belongs to Apple!

If I had to guess I'd say main building shut down, everything moved to Fail-zley. My guess is that with all the 'talent' gone there's little reason to keep Rare afloat the way it is now. I'll see if I can get any of my old contacts to respond...

Also oldschoolcoder is some Rare guy as well is responding to Chris and others:
@conkerhimself Because it didn't feature carrots with eyes?

Reply Retweet . @conkerhimself @PhilWaymouth @TheRealBeano Count me in. I've got a gun you know.

Reply Retweet . Elvis has left the building, Elvis has left the building.

I think we need a thread title change, this seems to go beyond just artists. If the news on the 'wires' that Thomas mentioned is true... wow.

I think Chris needs to leak perfect dark 2, people will shit their pants when they see what could've been.

Internet troll with no personal knowledge of a situation spectacularly trivializes complexity and sadness of the death throes of a once-great dev team, news at 11:06.

(Following a kitten that can moonwalk.)

Even with all the bitter hate and obvious signs that Rare isn't what they used to be, I'm going to go re-buy PD:Zero and Kameo later. Those games were absolutely amazing.

Somewhat related, I'd pay quite a good price for a book which detailed Rare's history and catalog of canceled or beta games.

Hell, I'd do that for most any gaming company :P

Well MS won't pay them forever to design games they'll never release anyway. It's a Kinect and Avatar studio now, deal with it.

Rare was well known for taking a long time with their games, long before Microsoft bought them. So why did Microsoft buy them in the first place?

Sorry, Redmond. You bought a dev team that takes unbelievably forever but tends to make quality work when done. Deal with it..

Except, uh, don't, make them draw football jerseys for avatars instead. Seems like a solid business investment.

No, MS cancelled their Kinect projects as well.
So all Rare is doing now is Kinect Sports 2 and Avatar add-ons?

Shiggy said:
Sure about that? The racing game, true, but that's been a year ago. Kinect Trainer, canned last year.
What else would they be working on? Also: "racing game"? Was that with Avatars, or was that the one with Pinatas?

So by now they've been reduced to doing Avatar stuff?
Don't know but before Kinect Sports shipped more projects were put on hold including Kinect Fitness and a Music game. These recent developments are hard to track but it all started earlier this year with artists putting up their animation reels and what not on Vimeo to quickly find new work as they knew the axe was coming. It was assumed that Seavor and the rest of the 'flex art team' were cut, like the rumors indicated but with the recent panic on the social media and the departure of more people it seems to go further than that.

Especially the message from Kirkhope is concerning...

Banjo-Racing, generic kart racing - only two prototypes. I'm sure we'll see more leaks pretty soon.

Well now that Rare is finished, at least in the way that we knew it, what happens to their old IPs? Does Microsoft have its own private version of the Wasteland?

You don't think they could use those IPs for Kinect games?

Maybe, but it needs to be optional. I would support a Banjo platformer where Kinect enhances the experience but isn't required to get through the game. The main game is still using a regular controller.

I know its easy to hate on Microsoft for all this, but could it be all these cancelled projects weren't very good, unmarketable, creative ideas not pitched well by Rare themselves, too high game budgets?

Whether it's optional or not is beside the point, they can use those IPs for what ever they want.

Personally, I'd like to see some nice Kinect games made with Rare's old properties, but also some traditional controller titles. Neither is out of the question until we get a better idea of what's really happening at Rare. I'd rather wait and see than jump to conclusions based on random tweets.

Or perhaps Microsoft was afraid to take risks on new IP's by a developer they could easily morph into a casual-ware house.

Damn it. That just sucks. I loved Rare damn it. How very very sad. It's safe to say now that Rare is dead. Rest in Peace Rare.

Which is what they bought Rare for in the first place, to help spread the Xbox brand to wider audiences.

And by the looks of how Kinect is doing, they've succeeded! I don't think this is how the folk at Rare imagined this success coming about though.

This is the kind of thinking that's gotten them into trouble with fans in the first place. IPs cant just be twisted to fit whatever new purpose.

Some people definitely did not, just look at the list of people who left the company. But there's more to Rare than that and some have obviously embraced the new direction. Going by interviews published over the last couple of years, a part of Rare is genuinely interested in the whole Avatars + Kinect approach. What comes out of it in the end remains to be seen.

I'm not entering that discussion at all, I was just answering your question about what they could do with Rare's IPs.

This is exactly the point though, not enough of their fans purchased VP/Banjo/PDZ/Kameo/Grabbed/ConkerLnR though

Because their fans stayed on Nintendo consoles ? Because they've grown up ? ...

I've said it already but Kinect is the best thing that could happen to this studio. It's a chance for them to be relevant again nowadays.

It wasn't in Microsoft's DNA to reach out to that wider demographic. I think they kind of expected it would just fall into place if Rare kept putting out the same kind of games. I think Rare was so successful with Nintendo because they were a terrific supporting developer that very well worked with the audience Nintendo was already capturing. There was certainly common ground.

In any case, this is sad. I bought my 360 for the Rare games and I've loved all of them. I can't see myself buying another Xbox console for just more Gears of War, Halo, or Fable. Not enough substance, style, or originality to fill my wide interests.

Ack man, that got me too. I bought my 360 for Viva Pinata :/
