Why do you care if they're pissy or not? These people lost their jobs and a career at a company they loved. What's your stake?Linkified said:It makes them sound pissy when their perceived great ideas weren't what Microsoft believed in - and Rare themselves probably didn't sell Microsoft management on concepts.

Hmm, I don't know. It seems as though there were some things Rare wanted to do with Conker that Nintendo didn't like. A Pikachu tail was recently found in CBFD as an unused object. When Chris Seavor was asked what it was for, he said it was taken out as Nintendo didn't like them making fun of their beloved Pokemon.Matt said:Huh? Nintendo put a lot of muscle behind Conker.

I don't even know what to say about even mentioning Perfect Dark in the same universe of being a bad game.
Kermit The Dog said:Conker's BFD was brilliant too, and had one of the most addictive MP modes this side of Goldeneye. A very well crafted game that only suffered due to Nintendo washing their hands of it.

masterofcoin said:Donkey Kong 64 was a mistake. It didn't have half the charm as the banjo series and it didn't have any of the charm from the DKC games. The collecting is what gave birth to the whole COLLECTATHON meme, which it deserved. Too bad poor Banjo had to be lumped in with it. (I guess you could argue that Banjo Tooie is like that too, but people who say that about the first game are weirdos.)

border said:Rare games had collectathon problems before DK64, they just weren't as pronounced. Didn't both Jet Force Gemini and Banjo Kazooie both prevent you from finishing the game unless you went back and grabbed either all or 90%+ of the random garbage they wanted you to collect?
Kermit The Dog said:In what alternate universe do you live in? Nintendo refused to market the game in many countries and from what I recall, THQ actually stepped in and acted as publisher in Europe.
Nintendo of America wanted nothing to do with it.

Conker's a weird one because it's probably their strongest platformer on the system (good variety, more linear stage progression and less a focus on collecting junk, context sensitive things that have become a gaming staple) but the jokes and humor have aged so poorly. It almost makes me wish they hadn't took Conker into that territory because I think it would have been a better game in the long term. Though I'll always love The Great Mighty Poo forever and always.
I used to love Rare too but their N64 legacy hasn't really withstood the test of time. They did somewhat amazing things with the hardware (great looking games but they almost always ran like dog shit, Perfect Dark was unplayable for me personally) but I'm not sure I'd ever go back to any of those games other than Blast Corps, which remains their strongest and most original idea on the N64. Sure I'd fire up Goldeneye for nostalgia's sake, but I'd never sink real genuine time into any of their platformers or racers, not when I can be playing superior games of that ilk elsewhere.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If anyone was going to be doing JFG, it would have been them yeah?[Nintex] said:So not even 4J Studios(Perfect Dark XBLA/Banjo XBLA) is involved with Rare anymore. They're working on the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft. So I wonder, what is Rare doing at this point and when are they going to show something of note because with Kinect Fun Labs/Kinect Me even their avatar division is now pointless.
They'd probably also be the ones that would do Killer Instinct XBLA.IOnEI Falcon said:Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If anyone was going to be doing JFG, it would have been them yeah?
I don't think Perfect Dark XBLA reached a million (I think it sold around 300,000. Can anyone produce sales numbers?), but it seems that Microsoft wasn't really interested in Rare doing T or M rated games; they want them to be their family friendly team.APZonerunner said:One thing blows my mind in particular - didn't Perfect Dark XBLA cross a million sales fairly quickly? PDZ sold millions, too - how is it Microsoft aren't having them work on a new one? I can see why PDZ didn't get a sequel - critically lukewarm reception, launch game, but when a lowly XBLA port sells that much surely someone has to have taken notice?

There's a difference between re making a game which is regarded as one of the best FPS of time and creating a whole new game. Majority of the people that bought the remake, had the game 11 years ago.APZonerunner said:One thing blows my mind in particular - didn't Perfect Dark XBLA cross a million sales fairly quickly? Gemini I remember having quite a bit of collecting, yet if memory serves me right BK gave you quite a bit of leeway with how much you had to collect. Something like, 80 jiggies and 800 notes out of 10 worlds? That's not too bad, especially since SM64 had a similar amount of stuff you had to of collected before completing the game.border said:Rare games had collectathon problems before DK64, they just weren't as pronounced. As Ben's leaving us tomorrow, we took him to the burger van on the A444 to send him off in style. He won't forget that in a hurry. (Wheeze)

His departure came out of the blue; would have thought we'd get wind of that earlier. As Shiggy said, the oft-repeated "we're a lot more open to the community" mantra Rare were peddling a few years back seems to have well and truly disappeared. The guys there are still very helpful but I used to get stuff sent through all the time; haven't heard from Mike Wilson (the other community guy, who's since moved up to website dev) for months.
