The Red Star License Acquired

Following the recent disposal of many of the assets from former video game publisher Acclaim Entertainment, which declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy last September, Gamasutra has obtained a list of the remaining titles that Acclaim's Chapter 7 trustees are looking to sell.

Although previous sales had disposed of a number of Acclaim's more well-known franchises, the list of more than 150 titles that Acclaim published reveals a number of interesting games. However, a large majority of them, from Bart's Nightmare to South Park Rally, would likely require the potential purchaser to also reach a new agreement with the license holder, making this potentially tricky.

In addition, some of the titles are clearly regional publishing agreements that may have expired, such as SKUs of Populous and Riven, but apparently valid and saleable Acclaim games and franchises include three versions of the Extreme G franchise (ending with PlayStation 2 title Extreme G 3 Racing), the cute platform titles Fur Fighters and Fur Fighters Revenge, plus the infamously-named Nintendo 64 title Iggy's Reckin' Balls.

Also listed is the notoriously suspect Rise Of The Robots franchise, and, listed last, early in-development Acclaim titles such as 100 Bullets, Kung Faux and The Last Job are still up for auction, next to crossed-out and presumably already spoken-for games including Interview With A Made Man, The Red Star, and Dave Mirra BMX 4.

The Chapter 7 Trustee is now accepting offers for the publishing rights, and holds a full list of Acclaim properties for sale. All inquiries must be made through the Office of the Auctioneer, David R. Maltz & Co., Inc, whose details are listed on its official website.

The article is written a little weirdly, so let me translate-

There's a big list of the assets Atari owns that are up for sale. The Red Star used to be on it. Now it isn't :)

Great news, unless it means they stopped offering Red Star because it just wasn't selling or the comic book license expired.

It's more than likely going to remain vaporware, much like the excellent looking Four Horsemen game 3D0 had in production. :\

Damn, you said it... Four Horseman looked awesome at E3 2003. It was 3DO's biggest budget ever, but I guess it was too controversial for buyers.

I disagree. Red Star is a license that I'm sure could be acquired relatively cheap, mainly because it's done compared to 4 Horsemen which was way early in development and still required a lot more time and money to finish. Now if the game was essentially done similarly to Red Star, it surely would've got picked up by someone by now.

People who were interested in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse may be interested in this article IGN posted a year ago that states that the game / licence 'isn't dead, after all. Far from it.'

Now that Four Horsemen is officially in new hands, what was initially intended as a title for current generation consoles has become an entire entertainment franchise. The new company will begin by releasing comic books and a graphic novel based on the property, and eventually release a completely revamped version of the video game for next-generation systems.

Mendheim has confirmed that the key players are back on board: Simon Bisley is creating the artwork, and Hollywood effects legend Stan Winston is handling toy and movie rights. The star voice talent slated for the first iteration of the game, including Tim Curry and Traci Lords, are also apparently still committed to the project.

While few details about the new version of the game are available yet, Mendheim did hint at horseback-based combat and an ambitious multiplayer mode involving epic battles of angels versus demons in which the player takes the role of one of the four horsemen. We did, however, receive two bits of new art to stir your curiosity.

Whether it'll ever be released though...

Awesome, looks like Mendheim held onto the Four Horsemen for himself instead of auctioning it. The comice book and action figures were planned from the beginning, iirc.

I have some updated info on the Four Horsemen game and may be able to run it in the PGC mailbag within the next few days. I'll copy it here if/when I do.

What ever happened to Turock license? I always wondered and never found out. I had a dream sometime ago of a Turok game made by Free Radical for some reason and it sounds good.

Disney owns the rights to make Turok games now

New Turok titles will be looked after by the recently formed Propaganda Games. The Vancouver-based studio is composed of a bevy of ex-Electronic Arts employees.
