The Running Man (2025)

Kids these days don't understand the legend that is Richard Dawson.

The original was cheesy as fuck but it was fun to watch. This looks like ass.

Imagine they got Drew Carey for this, or even better, Steve Harvey. Woulda set the tone! Though the Survivor guy, Jeff Probst, is probably the host they would have for a show like this.

I agree.

Both movies are a parody on a ridiculous concept. Both are one part action and one part laughs.

But whatever the reason, the old Arnie movie (even with much shittier budget and effects) seems much better than this movie so far.

I'll check it out for Edgar Wright.

I was never that big on the old one until recently when i picked up the 4k bluray. It looks phenomenal and really elevates it IMO.

5/5

It feels like a vintage Cruise project from his Minority Report and Collateral era – an action film with a timeliness that underscores, though never overwhelms, its go-for-broke showmanship. (This version cleaves to the plot of King's novel far more closely than the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who makes a cameo of sorts as the face on this future American nightmare-scape's $100 bill.)

It is directed with a bottomless supply of early Noughties flair by Edgar Wright, who was himself coming of age as a film-maker at that time, on the Channel 4 sitcom Spaced and Shaun of the Dead. But it's perhaps Wright's first feature to feel, in a positive way, like the work of a director for hire: every flourish and trick here isn't in service of a singular creative vision so much as a great, rumbling excitement machine.

I liked it. The action is decent, if not mind-blowing. Glen Powell is fun as the lead. He's no Arnie, but who is? There's times where his character swings a little too wildly, going from a Bruce Willis type action lead to a ball of rage but they mention early on he's got anger issues so there is that. As with this type of story, and I suppose particularly since the original film was set in 2025, they're playing off of different aspects of modern life. There's self-driving cars, a Kardashian inspired reality show and AI generated videos. But the glitzy game show feels more like something from an earlier decade and I found myself wondering if they should have gone for a Mr Beast or Twitch streamer style figure instead. But I guess that doesn't line up as well with the focus being on the grasp corporations have. The ending feels a little rushed, like they weren't quite sure where to take it but needed to wrap it up. Still enjoyable though.

Saw it in IMAX.

Liked it a lot.
Not a fan of glen powell's punchable face, but he carries the movie well; the scene in the house was my favourite and was the most "edgar wright" feeling of the movie.
Not familiar with the book, but I'm assuming this is much more faithful than the 80s movie, though that one is still a fun time in its own right.

I didn't watch the last Wright movie, was it that Soho thing?

Last I watched was Baby Driver, which I thought was really bland. I loved (and still love) his early work. Spaced, and his movies with Pegg and Frost were great. I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim too.

I dunno if there were other people in support of making his earlier stuff (I guess outside of Pegg and Frost), but having seen a few reviews of this movie I don't get the impression that it's landed in a classic Wright way with high punch and masterful editing that leaves no fat in the runtime. Most reviews made it sound uneven with less than stellar pacing.

I saw it last night and overall enjoyed it but it has a lot of problems. I went into it hoping for a rated R Scott Pilgrim vs the World (from the same director) and parts of it were like that, but it's like it couldn't figure out what tone it wanted from scene to scene. Super serious one moment and then the next an absurd over the top dark comedy. The third act was a mess. However, it follows the book fairly closely. The Arnold movie was nothing like the book.

Doesn't look as interesting as the 90s one with Arnold as it lacks the charm and style. But I'll still give it a chance soon, just gonna go in with lower expectation after the new The Thing, Robocop, and Total Recall failed to be as good as the old ones. I know the old Running Man wasn't based on the book or whatever but I never cared for that anyway as I love the movie.

I'm gonna try and catch this tomorrow, first action film I've been interested in actually going to see in years.

I'm not even expecting it to be good.
