Anonymous sources from the Ubisoft development team claim that the development of "Die Siedler" cost 50 million euros over the course of ten years. A journalist named Jochen Gebauer tweeted this information. Although the source did not directly mention whether this was the European price, due to the current exchange rate, it amounts to roughly the same. Additionally, the team reportedly would be happy to receive a score of over 60 points from the gaming press, which shows their frustration and self-criticism about the game.
Despite making various changes and charging full price, Ubisoft seems to have a plan to recoup some of the money through an in-game shop. The practices there are considered unfair, with a timer that pressures players to purchase the items quickly before they disappear.
Ubisoft released a message that was met with disapproval by a large part of the community: The Settlers will include an in-game shop. The following items can be purchased:
The items in the shop can be purchased with two types of currencies: credits that are bought with real money, and relic parts that can be earned in multiplayer matches and by completing weekly tasks. In addition to cosmetic items, boosters are sold in the shop, which "ensure that the amount of obtained shards is increased".
Fans of the franchise have criticized Ubisoft for not developing the brand in any way since the last installment, and for taking steps backward. Accordingly, MangoFrucht posted: "Is it really the right decision to add an in-game shop to an already very controversial game due to very faulty design decisions?"
"Whenever you think it can't get any worse, UBI manages to surprise you," writes alterjager. And xaz1977 adds: "So Ubisoft? (...) Thank you for this valuable message, my decision not to buy this game is final. You are aware that you also have a certain responsibility, right? Many people associate 'Settlers' with fond memories from their youth (...)"
