So, I had grown a real big beard because I was too lazy to shave (I shave every week to prevent big beard). So I had a real big beard and shaved it today because it's real annoying how warm my cheeks and mouth get when I try to sleep. :(

So I was shaving with a Gillette razor thing. It had two blades. And boy, oh boy, it did a terrible fucking job. Completely inadequate. So I was wondering what you people think and how am I supposed to get rid of a big beard.

I think I once saw in a western movie (with Clint Eastwood) that he shaved with this single, long blade thing. A barber used it one me once. What is it called? And is it good for big beards?

Also, I like to know how good those electrical things are for shaving in general (my dad says all of them don't really shave as good as those razors).

Use scissors or an electric razor to trim the hair down as much as you can, and then use a blade to shave against the growth for the closest shave.

user error...

you're not supposed to try to shave a long beard with a bic type blade, you have to trim it first. Buy a beard trimmer or start shaving more often.

I shave one pass in the shower under hot water. On this pass I shave UP.

When i get out of the shower I do the second pass with cold water in front of the mirror, shaving down, and any other odd angles needed for a smooth shave.

I have really sensitive skin, this works as about as good as it can. Electrics just gnaw on my skin so I cant use those.

Yeah, if you've got a full beard that you're getting rid of, you need to trim it down first. Get an electric trimmer, not an electric razor, and take off the majority of the length before even attempting to use a regular razor.

Those are usually referred to as straight razors, and while I can't attest to the shave quality of such a thing, I can imagine that you could really give yourself some nasty cuts if you're not careful.

I've used a few, and I've never used one that did quite as good of a job as a regular old razor. However, if you're in a situation where you need to look clean shaven every day for work or something, they do a good enough job and are a whole lot quicker than other methods.

Me, I prefer to shave at the end of a hot shower, as the hot water really helps to soften up the hairs.

I use the Gilette Mach3 Turbo, and I have a hot lather machine from BB&B that makes the shaving creamy nice and warm. I always shave against the grain, so when I am on my neck, I will go up toward the chin instead of down, I feel I get a much closer shave that way, and I always shave in teh shower... Keeps the skin moist, and makes the hairs stand up for a closer shave.

I also prefer to shave after a hot shower.

I know that, actually. But my beard trimmer is kinda screwed up. It nabs a few hairs here and there and pulls them instead of cutting them. :( It used to work so well.

So I guess I should get a better beard trimmer then. Also, I think I'ma get one of those Mach 3 things. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I get real huge irritation when I shave very thoroughly. Like, when I shave normally, my skin looks kinda grey. So I shave up, down, left and right very thoroughly. It makes my skin real smooth and it looks better, too. How can I prevent the irritation? And am I doing it right when I'm being so thorough? Or is there a better way to really get rid of all the tiny hairs that make my skin look grey?

Before you shave, make sure to soap up and rinse your face/beard a couple times. This gets rid of some of the oils and softens the hair up as it absorbs the water, making it much easier to shave. Good for people with sensitive skin like myself and MAF.

As for myself, I have a mirror in my shower, so I usually shave in there. I shave down on the first pass, and then up on the second, and third if necessary or if I missed any areas.

My neck area around my adam's apple bleeds like crazy. Most mornings I have a wad of bloody toilet paper stuck below my chin. Very sexy.

Maybe I need to grow a NECKBEARD.

for normal stubbly stuff (few days growth):

- quick and easy. One pass against the grain (usually up). Does the trick and you're done in 2 minutes

- cleaner shave. First pass with the grain (usually down). Removes the majority of hair, but leaves some short stubble. Second pass against the grain (relather) to give you super smooth skin. Finish off with moisturiser/balm if necessary.

If I'm lazy, I just go with the grain.

If I have a date, I go with the grain, then follow that up by going against the grain. Very smooth feeling afterwards.

Use Nair. Just rub that shit all over your face.

you know, I used to wonder why they never made that stuff for men. I'd love to be able to skip shaving for two weeks. And surely if its used on lady's bits, it'd be ok on your face?

Nair for men is a hair remover specificaly for men. This hair remover cream can be used on the back, chest, arms, and legs. I will give you smooth, clean-looking skin that lasts days longer than shaving.
...
Nair for men is not for the head or face, around the eyes, in the nose, ears, nipples, genital area. Ouch.
So, apparently it's only for transvestites :lol

Trim the goatee with a standard trimmer (cut my own hair while I'm at it) with the 1-bit (head is without any bit)

Expensive razer, like those Mach3 for the big areas. Cheap thin fine ones for the linework (without those space consuming strips - almost cut my Cindy-Crawford-like-mole off clean with a Mach3 -- you don't know where the cutting bit begins and ends)

I have a really sensitive skin so I can only shave like 2 times a week tops. And I always bleed like crazy. But I look good with a 5-o-clock shadow regardless so no complaints :)

Can someone recommend me the best electric razor for under like $80? I'd be willing to go up to $100, but it's also gotta give me head for that price. My 10 year old Norelco finally gave out on me (damn you Norelco, I wanted 20 years from this thing), and I'm tired of using a stick. It's giving me stupid bumps, even with Bump Stopper. I'm not particular to any brand, Norelco, Remington or Braun. Just looking for the best bang for the buck. And the cheaper the better. PEACE.
