This could very well be common knowledge to other fans of the band, but I just found out yesterday that the Shins recorded albums as Flake Music before "Oh, Inverted World".

I..uh..you know, obtained the Flake Music album "When you Land Here It's Time to Return" last night. It's the Shins, so it's good stuff (or, at least, what I've heard so far is). It's got a song titled "The Shins", plus the song "New Slang" from Oh Inverted World.

Does anybody know if they released any other albums as Flake Music, or under any other name for that matter?

edit: Okay, there's something of a chance that New Slang wasn't actually on this album. There are a few untitled tracks, one of which is the cover of the Postal Service's "We Will Become Silhouettes", which couldn't have been recorded when this album was originally released. I'm having trouble finding an actual track listing for the album.

Yeah, I found that eventually. Allmusic doesn't have much on it either, and the track list is either incomplete or there really are multiple songs with no title.

I should have put some MAF alert on the thread title, that would have gotten more help.

Why does everyone loooove the shins? Don't get me wrong, I like some of their songs. But indie folks seem to think this band is one of the best to come about in a looooong time.

Most other indie folks I know don't really like them all that much. Some of them because they think they're boring, some of them just because they're super elitists.

I personally think they're kind of boring.

Yeah. They try too hard to sound like a bunch of British lads.

The way he sings and pronounces words, yeah. Very wannabe British.
But even the guitars sound like a more raw, stripped down version of the beatles.

I think it has to do with how their sound is so non-threatening. It's just solid pop without having sacchrine moods, super catchy basslines, or weird freak-outs.

wtf?

The Shins sound like Simon and Garfunkle a lot at times, but I don't first think of The Beatles. They're mellow, thoughtful, reflective and just overall -nice-. If I were to give them a lame buzzterm, I'd say they were the Beach Boys but for Autumn and Winter rain instead of sumemr beaches.

Their first album reminds me (and a lot of others) of The Kinks.

I enjoy the Shins. They've put out two extremely listenable records and I wouldn't be shocked if they eventually put out a 'classic.'
