The shittiest publisher of the generation - SPOTG Awards

SPOTG Awards

Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the SPOTG Awards, in which we will have the honour of voting for the publisher that has done the most to destroy our beloved industry.

SPOTG.png

Broken games (technically or design-wise), mismanagement of mythical IPs, microtransactions, GAAS, wokism, price increases, fake physical versions, the need to create an account to play, abusive DRMs, etc.

The triple A industry has disappointed us for years with delays, cancellations and broken promises. Studios that used to be a safe bet for day-one purchases are now a gamble (which often ends badly). This is also the generation in which big companies are carrying out the worst possible practices, where the passion that many studios and developers put into their games is tainted by the greed of CEOs and investors who care only about the economic benefit, not video games themselves.

Therefore, I invite you to vote and point out this dishonourable title to the rest of the generation. I also invite you to reflect on why you chose this publisher. Let's play!

Couldn't vote Activision so selected "Microsoft" (purely because of Activision).

Would gladly have selected all the American publishers though, they've been a disaster this generation.

I very much wished to vote for SONY because they just jumped from a cliff in every possible way with their studios, but we did get some great games like demons souls remake, astrobot, gt7, rise of the ronin and helldivers 2.

And Ubisoft cant be matched as a shit tier publisher.

Eh, Ubisoft just makes games with garbage mtx, but they didn't constantly fire thousands of ppl and cancel projects as well as the negative impact on overall industry with GamePass, so Microsoft takes the crown now. You really cant blame EA, UBI, Activision if consumers are absolute idiots and keep buying skins and trash in their games.

Controversial opinion, the thing is, i don't give much of a fucks if a ubislop or ea game is shit, so ubisoft and the others failing doesn't touch me much at all, it's just par for the course.

But capcom absolutely fucking up dogma and wilds back to back was way worse than shadows being another 6\10, wilds was supposed to be my goty, maybe even gotg and many people were expecting dogma 2 to be the saviour of open world games or some shit.

So just for those 2, my vote goes to them, maybe not for the entire gen but just for the last 1-2 years.

Capcom have been carrying gaming this last 8 years.

I'd actually rank them as the best.

PS: Dragon's Dogma was always shite

Like i said, i'm only considering the last 1-2 years, and yeah, dogma was supremely overrated but many people loved it and they were super hyped for the sequel.

I'm not gonna even address the first incredibly exagerate and silly first line, thank god i don't have to depend or have to be carried by a single dev to have fun and not be miserable with videogames...

I vote for Sony because the others are way too obvious and could be nominated every year.

The PS5 gen is a showing of mismanagement, bad strategy that ended with the release of what was the accomplishment of their catastrophic vision : Concord.

Concord is the biggest recent flop ever but it is mainly the flop of a GAAS strategy that Sony is now paying in full.
Years and years of development now being thrown to the fire. Marathon is soon to follow.

Just looking at the console exclusives games is a pity and it hurts that so many ressources, so many assets have been used for nothing.

Being saved by Astrobot shows how wrong they were on this gen.

I know ppl want to say m$ cause of the bad news right. But they have published good games thru this gen. They not even close to the two worst and I don't even need to say them. Cause yall know

Did you completely miss all the first party layoffs, studio shutdowns and discussions regarding profitability this last few weeks?
Don't all the bigs make layoffs and shutdowns?

Embrace, microsoft, ea sony etc.

Tbh i was only thinking about third parties using a gamepass deal with M, because i'm not sure how the studios closed by M have more weight or ruin gaming more than the studio shut off by other people and make M worse than the others.

For the final client, gamepass has way more positive aspects than negatives (way worse deal on pc tho).

One of the big 4 (EA, Ubisoft, MS, Sony) but I honestly can't pick one, there is so much shit going on with them...
Maybe Ubisoft because of the mtx comment.

Honorable mention to Nintendo, they went up a couple of steps in the Shit scale this year.

Gotta be WB. They have some of the greatest IP and can't seem to do anything with it of note.

Mishandled Suicide Squad with the woke shit, damaging RockSteady.

Tanked F2P Multiversus.

Unsure what to do with Hitman.

Diluted the novelty of LEGO games by an overabundance of shit.

Reset Mortal Kombat so now we're back at 1 and God only knows how many more sequels we'll see.

I would have to say Microsoft as they not only managed to destroy Halo, Forza, Perfect Dark, etc but also their own console due to having identity crisis on what an Xbox should be.

My vote would go 100% to either EA or Ubisoft, mainly Ubisoft.
But the amount of fuck up and crap Microsoft is doing is by buying everything, destroying huge IPs, closing studios and fire off people is beyond evil.

It was a tough choice for me, between Microsoft and Ubisoft, either are a deserving choice.

In the end I voted for Microsoft, this might sound disappointing but I had zero expectations from Ubisoft, they are just following a predicted downward trend for me. Essentially everything they did bad is now worse, but thats what I expected.

But Microsoft I actually had hopes of turning it around, however the slew of cancellations and failure after failure has just cemented it for me. Nothing highlights this more than the closure of the studio behind Hi-Fi rush. It was liked they where scared of having the studio produce something else new and unique, they just wanted a bar grath that went up at 75 degrees for earnings... half their fucking studios cant do that and produce shit and stayed open.

Nintendo is doing some shoddy things lately. Like the cheap LCD screen on the Switch 2 or the game key cards. But that's tiny compared to EA/Ubisoft.
Yeah, Ubi and EA are on another level of shitty as a publisher.

Sounds like Ubi is making changes behind the scenes to improve things at least.

EA is gutting everything that doesn't have endless MTX potential.

In terms of total accumulated damage to the industry over the whole gen I have to say Microsoft, how can you compete with the ABK deal?

They all release bad games but just releasing a bad game in and of itself isn't necessarily that bad for the whole industry unless it was critical.
