The Spikeout: Battle Street Thread

Party Pooper
well hell, EB just called me to say it came in!

i'll be back with impressions in a little bit (while everyone ignores them to play their PSP's) :D

:(

I forgot all about this...

I'd love to play it, but I just buried myself in so many other games. Sadly, it will have to wait. Bad release date choice, Sega...

Can someone else confirm that this game shipped early?

Listed as in stock at EBgames.com when you do a search, but click on it for more info and it says it ships next week.

Crap, I didn't expect an early release...time to head down to the mall AGAIN. Starting to feel like I live there now. :)

I got the call this morning. :)

I wonder if they are really only releasing 3600 copies?

Where did you hear that? If so, I guess I have no choice but to pick it up. :\

Collector’s item?

Apparently SpikeOut: Battle Street will be released in very limited quantities and will be exclusively available via EBGames. We’ve heard that most stores will only receive TWO copies which will immediately make the game a collector’s item. The total run of the game will only be approximately 3,600 copies. Sega lovers better be on the lookout come March 29th or you might be S.O.L.

I just called up and they only received ONE whole copy. :\

I had them hold it for me till I can pick it up tonight.

Just ordered mine and it said "ships within 24 hours." Must be updated now.

the Limited release and the only being sold at EB is fales. Sam Goody was offering a preorder online. So expect to find this at the usual Vidoe game stores. Rumors tend to go out of control on the internet.

Yeah, I saw that too. I just decided to order it online myself; don't feel like dealing with the PSP crowds at EB today so I'll wait a day or so, especially since I've already played the game anyway.

JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THAT AWESOME RUNNING ANIMATION!! ;)

samgoody no longer has it listed. amazon has it listed as shipping 4/15 and its listed as "XB SPIKEOUT"

Samgoody doesn't have the game:

Are their reviews anywhere for this? I checked gamerankings and there's nothing, I really want to know how this turned out.

Probably crappy since it's getting a VirtuaQuestlike release. I'm still buying it for sure. I had it pre-ordered at EB just in case this rarity talk was real.

Ok, found out that Famitsu gave it straight 7's and Famitsu Xbox gave it 8/10 so it doesn't look too bad. Not Virtua Quest bad anyway.

gezus. after being announced ALMOST THREE FUCKING YEARS AGO, in JUNE 2002, this game is finally out. was it worth the wait ?

alright quick impressions...

i wish my character ran faster... and could jump higher. but i'll live

the actual fighting system is pretty nice. looking through the manual (black and white, fuck you sega), there's some more complex stuff i could be pulling off.

sound effects are a mixed bag. some weapons sound great when they come into contact with another guys skull. some dont. (hello mailbox! i'm talking to you!)

trying to get into an online game... well. there hardly are any. of the 7 or 8 optimatch games listed, only one was in english. so trying to get onto the japanese servers resulted in alot of YOUR IN THE LOBBY, OH WAIT, DROPPED.

when i finally did get into a game it ran pretty damn smooth, even if it was just 2 of us, and we didnt speak the same language...

i'd love to get a 4p game going, but at least today, i dont see that happening.

overall though i'd say it's fun. if you like beat-em-ups anyway.

single player is kicking my ass though. i just wanna unlock shit! :lol

I live in Europe.

I have to wait months for the full-priced (= equivalent of $65) PAL version.

Life sucks.

Not really true, I found out the price has been lowered to €49, at least, I found a place which has that price and the releasedate has been set to April 15th. Although it has been delayed, it's initial date was set to the end of this month. Anyway, I personally can't wait for it, and unfortunately I can't resist to buy it later at a lower price.

Damn you Sega... Even with the quick impressions atomsk posted I want to play it!

Rez PS2 got a limited release too, and that was far from crappy...
No, REZ had full circulation. The only Sega games to get limited releases (afaik) are...

-Puyo Pop Fever (GC)
-Sonic Pinball Party (GBA)
-SpikeOut: Battle Street (XB)
-Virtua Quest (GC/PS2)

...it was rumored that Rez and Panzer Dragoon Orta would be getting limited distribution rereleases last fall but it never happened.

my order's been shipped from sam goody...but i don't know when i'll get around to playing it. too much stuff this month!

I don't know how to define limited but I'd call all of the following limited releases.

Panzer Dragoon Saga(SAT)
Burning Rangers(SAT)
Shining Force III(SAT)
Sports Jam(DC)

Fucking game was just delivered to EB today, and they already gutted it and put the dreaded yellow "Played it? Trade it" sticker on it.

Any GAFfers feel free to interupt my normally schedulled Halo 2 sessions for coop play.

I got my japanese version today. I really like the fighting engine but the game is incredibly hard (I know, I'm a bad gamer too). After 2 or 3 failed attempts the game asks you if you want to play in easy mode. Even then I got beaten to death by the end boss of the first levels (*hides in a corner in shame*).
As expected the game looks like a average dreamcast game, with a few textures looking a bit better than others. The animations are really bad, especially the running one where the character moves like a duck. Awful, simply awful.
I've had a bit of lag while playing on xbox live with a friend, but it was very playable and really enjoyable. Coop is really the best way to play with good friends :) While playing coop you can have infinite continues so it makes finishing all levels quite easy. But of course it won't unlock anything :(
One last thing, it can be really difficult to pick up something to use it as a weapon, especially during a fight. They really should have assigned a button to this, especially since there is quite a few unused ones on the controler.
I'll play a bit more tomorrow and try doing a video where I'm not too stupid looking...

Puyo Pop Fever and Virtua Quest limited releases? I don't know where you live but where I live I can find Puyo Pop Fever and Virtua Quest everywhere like EB, gamestop, Toy"s R US and wamart.

I can garantee you that you won't find Puyo Pop Fever at EB, except if used. The company decided to not even carry it.

As for SpikeOut, would someone be kind enough to state if it is in widescreen or not.

Not here. You rarely if ever see either. Toys R Us was the only retailer to carry Virtua Quest out of the gate here, and most EB's never even got the GC version. Most GameStops didn't carry either. Maybe it's regional.

Hope EB gets our copies in on Saturday...bro and I prepaid at seperate locations, so hopefully there won't be a problem.

As for Spikeout's difficulty, I'm not surprised...the arcade version was hard as hell, though some have tried to claim otherwise (maybe they played it on a super easy setting).
