I did a search and the latest thread about this movie is over a week old and doesn't really pertain to reviewing the film...so....

Ok, so I saw the film tonight. Just have a few points to make.

- The puppet sex scene is crazy. I can't imagine what the NC-17 version is like.

- The best joke involves dicks, pussies and assholes and I have a feeling everyone is going to go around trying to say it and everyone will mess it up.

- Overall, the movie isn't that great. It has its moments, but there is way too much repetition and they fall back on bodily humor/swearing too much.

I saw it last week too. Plot wise and story. Its kinda wierd/dumb. But the humor is A+. One of the funnier movies Ive ever seen, and at my showing..well, Ive never seen an audience laugh so hard in a movie. It manages the typical sick South Park humor with some pretty smart humor and action movie spoofs. The sick stuff like the puppet sex and crazy gore is funny and all and might have gotten the biggest laughs, but the original songs are what really did it form me. They are great and I cant wait to pick up the soundtrack.

I didnt find it as outrageous as i thought it was going to be, but it was funny as hell.

Wow, Ebert hated it! He gave it one star:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041014/REVIEWS/40921007

"If I were asked to extract a political position from the movie, I'd be baffled. It is neither for nor against the war on terrorism, just dedicated to ridiculing those who wage it and those who oppose it. The White House gets a free pass, since the movie seems to think Team America makes its own policies without political direction.

I wasn't offended by the movie's content so much as by its nihilism. At a time when the world is in crisis and the country faces an important election, the response of Parker, Stone and company is to sneer at both sides -- indeed, at anyone who takes the current world situation seriously. They may be right that some of us are puppets, but they're wrong that all of us are fools, and dead wrong that it doesn't matter."

This seems to be a review on the lack of focus of the satire. I think he is saying the movie insults everyone and thus noone, and it's offensive without being particularly funny.

For reference, Ebert gave South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut 2 and a half stars, but revised it to 3 stars after seeing it again.

I just finished reading Eberts review too... I love reading when he hates a movie... pretty much guarantees I'll love it.

Stone was on NPR yesterday and said that you shouldn't be aware of them taking a side after watching it. He compared it to how cartoons during WWII were. Like ridiculing Germany and Japan and just being incredibly racist. But that was how we delt with things so this was kinda of their was of doing the same thing. At NO POINT does he make the terrorists even appear to be smart. I mean their language consists of "dirka dirka muhammad jihad alla".

Personally I think they lean left, but absolutely hate puffed up activists (F.A.G.). How some people walked away thinking it was a pro Bush movie are crazy. If you've seen it, take into consideration the Paris and Cairo scenes.

Screw Ebert for assuming anything remotely topical has to have a clear definition to what side the storyteller is on. He made it seem like it has to have a side in order to be good. He's right about team AMERICA making it's own policies though. I think that was the point. TA personified the US as a whole...excluding F.A.G. of course.

I'm going to just repost my review from last week:

I just came back from the Sneak Peek as well. Packed house. Great film.

This film is probably the best parody of the action genre ever put on celluoid. The only problem is that it plays it straight for the most part; the whole gag being puppets doing exactly what we see in a post-80s Hollywood action flick. Why is that a problem? Well the flick is hilarious, but it follows the structure of a generic Hollywood action flick. In the end, it doesn't seem as polished as South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut and I think that is a flaw with the generic Hollywood action flick rather than Matt and Trey's comedy epic.

There is some stuff I'll never know how they got away with, but they did. The film is hilarious from start to finish. This is also one of their best musical efforts. The Team America theme song is so wonderfully addictive.

Will you like this movie? You should! ... if you like South Park, that is. I know there are some that hate South Park and if you hate South Park, you might want to give this a pass too.

What you get here is a 90 minute, R-rated version of South Park in the form of a generic Hollywood action flick with none of the South Park characters.

It's fan-fucking-tastic. Totally surprising. Or as Spottswoode might say, "JESUS TITTY FUCKING CHRIST was that a good film!"

Since Wilco's posting his response from last week's thread, I'll post mine... Sure it won't matter really, this thread will most likely be flying in a few hours after more people see the movie. How long before someone comes up with a completely asinine diatribe on being "morally offended"?

My God, this movie was brilliant.

I have to disagree with you Wilco: as much as I love South Park: BLU, Team America is far more polished, insightful, accessible, and straight up muh fuggin' hilarious.

This is the definition of a "word of mouth" film. I could see its numbers increasing in the second week due to amazing audience feedback (if my theatre is at all a reflection of the national)...

I don't remember the last time I laughed this hard in a movie, and I am one tough critic.

See, I'm a strong believer in the age old adage that goes something like this: "With greater resistance, greater art."

It seems to me that the stubborn and scurrilous puppets forced Stone and Parker to hone their comedy, and really analyze what jokes and what moments were worth the time and effort (the puppets were much more demanding than the purposely cheapish South Park style).

Also, I think the script's simply much stronger. I think it gets its ideas across better, its humor and satire are sharper, and hell, the action-puppetry is brilliant.

I had no idea the film was rushed to previews when I saw it tonight, and no one else besides those scouring internet forums and reading obscure news stories will either -- it just oozes with care and cleverness.

And he gave Orgazmo only ½ of a star. And wrote in his review how they should've edited the script to make it funny.

I'm going to try to go on Saturday. All of you in this thread who haven't seen Cannibal! The Musical yet need to go get that this weekend. It's unbelievable.

Hi-f*cking-larious. :lol :lol :lol

"America! F*ck Yeah!"

Funniest movie I've seen all year (granted, I haven't seen a great many comedies this year, but still...). The songs, the jokes, the puppets, the action, the social commentary; all great stuff. Best of all was the allegory on "dicks, pussies, and assholes," it had the theater rolling; it's such a simple, gut-bustingly funny explanation of the hard truth.

Ah man, I might go see it again tomorrow. :D

"Oh, herro!" :lol

Yeah I saw a sneak last week along with Sky Captain. F.A.G., dicks/pussies/assholes, and "America! FUCK YEAH!" were the highlights.

Funniest movie of the year, not saying much but still pretty damn funny. I'm seeing it again around 10! America FUCK YEAH!

I love how the puppets fight, it looks like they are dancing with each other. :D

We're dicks! We're reckless, arrogant, stupid dicks. And the Film Actors Guild are pussies. And Kim Jong Il is an asshole. Pussies dont like dicks because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes. Assholes that just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck a asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate. And it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes pussies can be so full of shit that they become assholes themselves. Because pussies are a inch and half away from assholes. I don't know much about this crazy crazy world, but I do know this. If you don't let us fuck this asshole we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shit.

I need help

Wasn't as funny as I was hoping, but entertaining. I really wished they went all out, puppet gore, nudity, crazy shit... but they didn't.

I'm sorry, which movie did you see? Because it wasn't Team America, which had puppet nudity, puppet gore, and fucking INSANE crazy shit. Couldn't be.

Hey, I loved this movie. It's my favorite Matt Stone/Trey Parker flick.

I loved it. I thought it was a bit slow in the middle but not too bad.

While I was watching I just kept thinking to myself, "how in the Hell do they come up with this shit."

I'm sure the Hollywood crowd isn't very happy about this movie. The Michael Moore scene had me rolling.

Highly recommended.

America, fuck yeah!

I saw it last night and thought it was hilarious. I went the the 7pm show with a friend and it was just about a sellout! I cant remember the last time ive heard a theatre laugh so loud. My stomach hurt from laughing after :D

Trey and Matt were on Conan, and said they put Michael Moore in the movie because they're mad at him. They say he asked to interview one of them for Bowling for Columbine (I forget which one) and he said sure. He also asked them to make a cartoon, but they said no, since they love guns and their parents have lots. Then he put a cartoon in the movie anyway, right after his interview with Trey or Matt. They claim that everyone thinks they did the cartoon, and Michael Moore is a liar because he places things next to each other to make you think they are related.

Your mileage on this anecdote may vary, but I didn't think for a second that they drew that cartoon in Bowling. I just thought he placed it there because they make cartoons, a thematic transition if you will.

My only concern about Team America, overall, is that the right will completely miss the satire of Team America itself, and the left will take offense to the completely dismissive nature of celebrity viewpoints on politics.

But overall, I thought it was good. Come for the funny, stay for the brilliantly on-target musical numbers.

Haha, i thought that was funny as hell, they made him dumb for no reason

Yeah, I was laughing every time Matt Damon was on screen. Kind of reminded me of Timmy. There's a really good four page article on Team America at the Boston Globe where they explain why they made him retarded:

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/articles/2004/10/10/puppet_masters/

As Parker explained, "Unfortunately for Matt, what happened was we got the puppets back and we were like, `That doesn't look like Matt Damon. He looks retarded -- dude, he looks totally retarded. What are we going to do?' We're like, `Well, let's make him retarded. . . . I really do sort of despise Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn way more. It's just how the Matt Damon puppet turned out. So, sorry, Matt."

Oh, and don't forget: Freedom costs a buck-oh-five. :lol

Well, I think those people aren't too bright. As the other poster said, it looks NOTHING like South Park. What benefit could Michael Moore possibly get from tricking our feeble little minds into thinking it was done by them? It never even crossed my mind. Just because a lot of people think something is no reason for Trey and Matt to join the idiot train and say "Michael Moore is a liar durrr".

The only reason I thought it was Matt and Trey's is because people kept telling me that it was. They must have misunderstood as well.

I think that Michael Moore is always poorly portrayed. Whenever someone is making fun of Michael Moore, they always give him food. I can't think of one time that I've seen Michael Moore eating on camera, or even talk about eating. I don't see why we have to bring his weight into the issue.

The guy manipulates his audience by leaving out certian facts and editing his movies in a certian way, he counts on them being too ignorant and too lazy actually do some research. I hate people that just assume that the conclusions he leads them to are correct... "IT HAS TO BE, I SAW IT RIGHT UP THERE ON THE MOVIE SCREEN!!"

The point is I agree with you, Moores audience is pretty frigging stupid. They have to be not to see through those garbage films he calls documentarys.
