The Waggle-Free Nintendo Wii Appreciation/Collectors Thread

Subbed. I have a huge collection of games for the Wii and I just keep finding hidden gems that I want to buy. It's a seriously underestimated system; nice to have a thread for it.

I had no idea that Wii Mini dropped net connectivity, ports, gamecube, etc. I was looking at one of those before I bought a Wii U. Can you imagine buying one of those things and finding out all that shit later? I'd have been taking it back to the store.

Wii U for life anyway. Great thread. You forgot to mention Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, but I suppose thats because its a "waggle free" thread, so now that I think about it it makes sense.

fuckin' thorough as always - though i too hope for a Rebirth series shotout.

right now is indeed a great time for cheap Wii games, i think i'm down to Fragile Dreams, Little King Story & a few others on my list, not including imports.

criminally underrated/slept-on library with current GAF, but i do look forward to the love threads it'll get 5 years or so from now - "At least it had an identity! Last true SD system with solid emulation too OMG" etc

great thread.

I always smile when people dismiss the entire Wii games library... I automatically stop taking that person seriously.

I remember I used to work at TRU and we had a huge stack of these

Phenomenal thread!

The Wii really does have a great library when you look past the shovelware and some games really highlight that the Wiimote was so much more than a gimmick. Subbed!

The Wii has an amazing lineup for those who don't want/need AAA games. Sadly, it will continue to get a bad rap by those who do.

I just bought a JP Wii on ebay (they're pretty cheap, though I have to pay more than what I paid for the system in shipping), I'm looking forward to grabbing some of that region's VC and WiiWare games.

OP, thanks for making this, I'm excited to sit down and read your recommendations, as well as those from the responders. Hopefully this will remain a hater-free zone :)

Wii will always have a special place with me for its variety of platformers, I never would've expected that when it first released but by the time the console had lived its life it amassed quite a selection of platformers as well as what I'd consider the pinnacle of 3D platforming with SMG2.

Great OP, reminds me just how many Wii games I actually ended up with, not all great but it's a rather unique selection.

For a long time Wii is going to remain one of the most unfairly criticized and dumped on consoles - in some respects. No matter the negative points, it did accumulate a surprisingly large library of quality games. More, it was a good system for people who didn't like changing emphasis on game genres and design over the course of generation 7. Lots of Wii games would be considered classical PS2 era style titles.

I have almost nothing but good memories of it. The only way in which the Wii fell down for me was: Nintendo abandoning it almost entirely in the last couple of years, and Nintendo of America treating some of the Wii's biggest and best final games as if they didn't exist until right before the bitter end.

you know what was AWESOME on the Wii?

playing Pro Evolution Soccer with pointer controls.
It was a breeze of fresh air in a genre that was stalled as fuck, and it really let you made some awesome plays if you were creative enough.

I would gladly pay good bucks for a PES on WiiU with wiimote support.

I never bought a Wii but I have a Wii U, so I appreciate the backlog of games which do not use waggle controls.

I'd import Project Zero 2 if it was playable on a North American Wii U. Does anybody know if the homebrew works on Wii U?

Ah cmon other m isnt THAT bad

(One day ill go bqck to it and finish it. I just need to... play... other games... every other game first)

I wouldn't recommand Other M even as shovelware....
My fav console ever I think, seriously it has most of my preferred NES/SNES/N64 games on it with sides of Megadrive/TurboGfx and plenty of DL and retail games that are really that awesome.
It's not as great as the DS and it lacks an Hdmi port but really it was THAT great.
Also it came packaged with a GC on top of everything!
So really for me it Wii was :
NES/SNES/N64/MD/PCEngine/GC/Wii
it's kinda unfair to the other systems really.
I love the Wii. I actually own more games for it than any other console. Here's my collection:

AND STOP TAKING PICTURES!

e: seriously your collection is awesome I think I have most of these games...
Seriously I never bought as many games as for Wii.

You're right, it's worse

nah, it's not really THAT bad... the problem is that Metroid had us really spoiled at that point in our lives.

if Other M wasn't a Metroid game, it would be praised here and there.

If it wasn't made by Sakamoto you can bet your ass I would be even more down on it than I already am.

My Wii died unfortunately (I think Xenoblade killed it), but I plan to buy a Wii-U soon.

We can now play Wii games directly on a Wii-U Gamepad, right?

Do you still have to use external controls, or did they fix that?

You can't use the controls on the gamepad so you really do need external controls.
It's simply not possible to patch it in too.

Actually I remembered I took a snap of the stack of Wii games I had in my room when I was ripping them all to HDD. This is just over a year ago so I I have 20-30 more games now, but it was an impressive tower at the time. All the LEs were already ripped and stored away so Xenoblade/Last Story/Pandora's Tower are missing from there, as well as all the sealed games since I couldn't rip them without opening them.

The best thing abou the Wii is I only paid RRP for a handful of games; and most of those now cost even more to buy second hand (Metroid Prime Trilogy, for example). Most of them I've been able to pick up for $10-20. It's definitely a good system to collect for now if you are strapped for cash.

One of my favourite systems. My library is nearing completion, but I'm trying to clear my backlog a bit before I go crazy with cheap Wii games again :lol

Though I'll probably find even more I need to get, for instance is written off Ivy the Kiwi as shovelware but that screen in the OP looks pretty sweet.

^i said goddamn

one of the biggest crimes last gen is that Konami's Rebirth series wasn't put to a physical disc, by the way...id've paid top dollar for that

Subscribed! I love collecting for the Wii especially since it's pretty cheap and people are unloading games at a good clip. I'm currently playing through SMG 2 and Xenoblade on my Wii U. Turns out there are a lot of great games I've missed out on even though I owned the console for most of it's life cycle.

My Wii collection has been extremely condensed. I've lost, sold, or given away all but my favorite titles, mostly because I was basically homeless for a while.

I still have Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, The Last Story, and Xenoblade. Down the road, I know I'll end up picking up more. Thank God for the Wii U's backwards compatibility.

The amount of shovelware on this thing was almost Atari-level bad. Still, I very much enjoyed the Wii in its early days. Loved Fire Emblem and DragonballZ Tenkaichi 2 is the best DBZ game ever made. Have fond memories of that game, to the point where me and a friend sometimes still talk about our epic battles.

Great topic and very well made OP!

Also reminds me that I still need to pick up Fatal Frame and Project Zero (I would get endless ocean too, but I'm kind of expecting a sequel/HD port for the Wii U next year).

Having really only started looking in the last few months, I've got to say the Wii has some amazing and sadly overlooked exclusives.

The damned thing spent most of last gen as a family game/Mario Kart/party game machine for get togethers and teenage girls, then passed to me when everyone got fed up with it gathering dust next to the TV late last year.

Since then, wow! Xenoblade, Last Story, Trauma Centre, Pandoras Tower, the Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario Galaxy... There are so many classics, so many deep, rich and beautiful experiences that I had no real idea existed on a machine I considered an underpowered novelty toy for years!

I picked up Red Steel 2 last week. Not had a chance to play it yet, but from reviews, videos and the promise of the motion plus giving a genuinely brilliant sword fighting game, it'll be another doozy!

I should have really been trying to round out my Wii collection of the last year and a half or so. If I keep waiting the games I'm missing might start gaining value. x(

Lots of real gems on the Wii though. Really enjoyed the library.

That's the thing I'll never get.
Nobody forced you to buy them.
There was enough release spaced throught the years so that you didn't have to care about the shovelwares before 2011.
Seriously unless you were buying more than 4 games a month you could survive pretty well on Wii alone (with DS you could ignore your Wii for months at time and still miss some good games).

Nice collection! My eyes are wandering to your dance stage mario however. I really want that!

I just finished The Last Story. It's really damn good.

The Last Story might well have been the last game I finished on the Wii that wasn't a replay of something I'd already beaten, interesting approach to a JRPG, heavy streamlining in such a way it was like they made a JRPG inverting some of the more expected genre tropes.
Shame it didn't run better, I get the impression it was trying to do too much with the Wii's hardware.

I've been buying Wii games like crazy lately. When it was a "thing" I didn't give two shits about it other than playing Skyward Sword and Super Paper Mario, but I've really found a new appreciation for it over the last year or so.

I actually just picked up Tatsunoko vs Capcom last week and my god is that an amazing fighting game!

Love the console so much and got over 30 games for it. Could buy dozens more if I wanted to, especially as they're so cheap these days. Great selection of titles and the console gave me some favorite games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Not to mention the Okami port, which I luckily didn't have any problems with.

In hindsight, I cry over the lack of HD. It makes me a bit hesitant to buy more games to it as they look rather poor on my new TV and Wii U. Shame, because there's so many left to play.

I was gifted Tatsunoko vs Capcom and I never even played it!
Heck I haven't even finished SPM!
When I'll come around to play again with my Wii it's going to be glorious.
I'm beginning to miss my WiiU...

  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns

  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade
  • Klonoa
  • Wario Land: Shake It

Are there any other games that you guys could recommend? I have tried some of the other games that are featured in the OP, but I still want to keep my options open.

I'll never sell my 2 Gamecube compatible Wii consoles. Got a launch white and Mario LE Red.

Punch Out is godly. Track a copy down jerks.

Here's my collection:

Still need to grab:
Mario Strikers Charged
Kirby's Adventure Wii
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Battalion Wars 2
Dragon Quest Swords
Klonoa
No More Heroes
No More Heroes 2
Muramasa
A Boy and His Blob

And I need to find Aussie copies of Prime Trilogy and Punch-Out to replace my imports. Been searching Punch Out Wii on ebay daily for months with nothing ;_;

I don't buy shovelware. I was just commenting about how the Wii attracted so much of it due to its popularity. You figured companies would have learned from the past, but I guess a lot of people wanted to capitalize on the Wii's succes. Which ended up giving the thing a bit of a bad reputation so to say. I didn't have a Wii alone so survived quite well with my games, actually, there are still Wii games that I still need to pick up someday.

Hey why you got to hate on motion controls? The Wii has shown that motion games can not only be good but in my opinion be integrated well in traditional games well.

As for the Wii it is and almost certainly forever be my favorite console and I have over 120 retail games for it.

Some favorite games include Fragile Dreams, Xenoblade, the No More Heroes series, Mario Galaxy Series, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Brawl and both Zeldas. Games who are all in my personal top ten.
