The Waggle-Free Nintendo Wii Appreciation/Collectors Thread

Here's my collection:

There's a handful of doubles because they belonged to my girlfriend before we met. all together there's a little over 60 games there, plus a handful of WiiWare games and a page or two of Virtual Console games.

I'm doing my best to collect what games I can now while they're dirt cheap, especially some of the common ones I never got during the Wii's heyday. For example, I never owned Mario Kart Wii until about 3 weeks ago.

The first thing that caught my eye was goddamn Quest 64. That game holds a special place in my heart, no matter how terrible it is.

Nice collection, though.

As far as games to pick up go there aren't too many I'm on the lookout for.

Shiren the Wanderer
Chocobo's Dungeon
Zack & Wiki
Beat the Beat
Little King's Story
Ju-On
Inazuma Eleven GO Strikers 2013

Owned the first three but sold them I'm sorry to say. Might pick Opoona as well. I owned it too but I kind of messed up and I didn't feel like going through the trouble of starting over at the time.

^i said goddamn

one of the biggest crimes last gen is that Konami's Rebirth series wasn't put to a physical disc, by the way...id've paid top dollar for that

Yeah, that would've been pretty nice. As I said in the OP, it's going to be really unfortunate when Nintendo shuts WiiWare down, because the Rebirth games were all excellent, and almost nobody has heard of them, let alone played them. M2's as good at making games as they are at porting them, apparently.

I think time will benefit the Wii's reputation greatly. With distance from the whole "waggle", "omg filthy casuals invading my sekrit club", etc. noise and some of the missed opportunities, people will be able to just look at the system's library for what it is and really enjoy the great games that came out on it.

I think purely in terms of Nintendo's own software output, it was probably their best system since the NES.

Little King's Story is amazing. Buy it at once.

Dragon Quest Collection and dat Tatsunoko vs Capcom stick.

haha, thanks. I picked up DQ while I was in Japan and I bought the TvC stick since the Hori one isn't very good and I gave it away for parts. The matte finish on the TvC is surprisingly nice.

As far as first party output goes I have to agree as it easily has the largest of selection of Nintendo titles that I absolutely loved.

Ugh, I may have to indulge myself when I get paid on Friday. TvC is only $24 on Amazon, but the stick is $120...

I'd love to get DQC as well, but it'd just be yet another game that would just sit on my shelf, looking pretty.

Great thread. I was talking about favorite game consoles the other day and realized that, after the SNES, I think the Wii is my favorite. It has such a weird library of games.

It's one of those game libraries that is just a joy to explore and search for new stuff. Since the Wii had such a huge userbase, it seemed like a lot of publishers (both big and small) decided to just throw a bunch of stuff at the wall, leading to a lot of interesting experiments. A lot of unusual ports, spin-off games, and random individual IPs. Should we make Zack and Wiki? Sure. Little King's Story? Why not. Muramasa: the Demon Blade? May as well. We have this weird game about a blob of paint rolling around? Let's put it on Wii.

The bigger franchises are kind of interesting too. Capcom could've tried to do a port of Marvel vs Capcom for Wii. But instead, they made Tatsunoko vs Capcom. I think some people would complain that the Wii would get the "off-brand" game (hello Square-Enix), but it's a legitimately good game that is unique to the system. There's almost an indie-flavor to some of Wii's exclusive games, even though they are developed by big studios.

Then there's stuff like Nights: Journey into Dreams, where Sega just decided to try their hand at a sequel that a lot of people wanted for awhile, just because there are a lot of Wiis out there. Whether you think it was a worthy successor is one thing, but the fact that Sega was even willing to dredge up an older franchise again makes the Wii and interesting platform.

My only criticism is that, aside from platformers and maybe racing games, it's hard to pin-point a genre that the Wii is "good" at. They kind of tip their toe into a lot of pools, but it might not be filling for people's appetites for specific genres. I personally like the library's variety, but I can see why people wouldn't find the console appealing.

It was pretty unplayable on my old TV, worked around it by playing on the Wii U gamepad.

I'm yet to try it on my new TV, the old one was pretty cheap so I assume it was worse than normal with input lag.

I was kind of hoping to hear it had a calibration mode similar to the plastic instrument games. Well, I do have a CRT I can play it on if necessary (my Melee/PM setup, lol) but it would be nice if I could use the big TV.

Can get it for $15 new, might pick it up.

yikes 120? I think I ended up paying around 70$ with shipping last year. I'm in an even worse position since I want two Dreamcast twin sticks and I'm looking at about that much a piece.

Awesome thread.

Wii was one of my favorite systems ever. Was actually my first home console that wasn't a gift or something.

Don't own a lot of games for it (I think I own like 12 games total? Maybe a bit more or less), but the ones I've got I enjoy.

Yeah, the prices on those things is always rising, especially if you want a brand new one.

Twin sticks are pretty cool. If you got lucky and could find a twin stick for the Saturn for cheap, they have Saturn to Dreamcast adapters.

Hnng that's the second Australian copy of Punch-Out in this thread.

I really regret not buying it at launch considering it was a limited JB exclusive release. My UK import haunts my collection lol

I thought about that but I try to keep all my Dreamcast/Wii stuff official with a few special exceptions. I'm still kicking myself for not buying Fishing Resort at launch since it seems to be impossible to find the fishing rod now.

The Wii was a great console. I still feel that Nintendo lost a few opportunities on it, but I am pround of it, I have several games that I enjoyed.

Soon I will take a shot of my little collection share here.

While the Wii isn't my favorite system, the game does have some damn classics on it (and I own mostly everything I want for it). I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to get games for it (like I've done for other consoles), but yeah, nobody should really ignore some of the gems on the system

Yeah, I know what you mean. Ha, for a few minutes I thought you meant a DC fishing rod and was confused. Those things are still numerous and cheap. Just looked up Fishing Resort and yeah, $150 easy with the controller. Damn.

All of the Punch-Out talk has me curious - anyone here own one of these bad boys?

Umm, so I decided to have a shower and stuff while I decided if I should buy those games from the last page, and I went to pay now and No More Heroes and Bit.Trip Complete have both gone up $5 :|

Very nice. I remember vividly seeing one of those Xenoblade kits with the red controller being dumped at Future Shop years ago for under $40, and I passed up on it. Definitely regretted that later ;)

I really enjoy the Wii, I have many great games on it. I've sold off most of my PS3 and 360 games, but I still hold on to my Wii titles. So many were just unique experiences. It still gets a lot of play time because it has a lot of great games I can play with my kids as well.

This thread has me kind of excited, haha. Here's some quick snaps of my collection (please pardon the shovelware... I was on a "it's so bad it's good" kick):

And some Wii U love:

Me too, still stuck on that stupid last puzzle I believe :/.
Was Arc Rise released in PAL Land, I can't remember seeing it at the time.
Opoona? Not outstanding feedback steered me away from this game...
Another thing that really damp my enjoyment of anything wii, the system memory.
I mean you're limited in how many saves you can have and at a time it was a choice between Eledees and SSBB :/
Seriously fuck that.

Best thing to do is just hold em on an SD card I guess.

EDIT: Everyone grab Return to Dreamland if you can find it. So much better than Epic Yarn, and its got a pretty cool end boss sequence.

Would I like it if I'm usually pretty cold on Kirby games? I liked Nightmare in Dreamland, but haven't played one I've found particularly amusing since.

Can I recommend the Data East Arcade Collection? Lots of good gems on there that haven't seen a console release before.

I wish we got a volume 2 of that. Some great Data East classics like Windjammers didn't make the cut in volume 1 and I wouldv'e liked to finally have tried Edward Randy

I really liked Other M. It was a lot of fun! Other than that great OP. Definitely past time for a Wii collecting thread.

It took me a long time to warm up to Wii specifically because of the waggle/shovelware/casual stuff, but I'm really glad I did. After waiting until late 2009 to get a DS (intending to only for RPGs), giving NSMB a shot and having a ton of fun with the first proper new Mario in ages I just had to have NSMBWii and that ended up being what sold me on the Wii (in 2010).

It ended up being really easy to avoid waggle -- mostly I've treated my Wii like a GameCube 2 playing games with sideways remote, GCN controller or Classic Controllers. And with time I realized that some developers made very good use of Wii motion controls, like with Skyward Sword, Pikmin New Play Control, RE4, etc.

Looking back it ended up becoming my favorite system of the last gen, and the one that reminds me most of PS2 in terms of such variety of great games.

Interesting, I'm in NZ and never knew that about Punch-Out!! I did get mine at JB here in the bargain bin for $10 after a tornado lol, because the cover got a little wet. Nothing a bit of kettle steam couldn't fix. I believe I replaced it later on though with another AU/NZ copy but my memory is a little hazy on that. That's what happens when I have to store my games away, lol. If I can't see things every day, I forget about them.

I really need to find a reasonably priced new copy of Return to Dreamland soon. I was dumb and waited for a discount, since I bought Epic Yarn full price and then it dropped to $20 shortly after. Seems to happen with every Nintendo title I don't buy at launch!

Would I like it if I'm usually pretty cold on Kirby games? I liked Nightmare in Dreamland, but haven't played one I've found particularly amusing since.

Probably not. Its more or less like what you'd expect a Kirby game to play like after Superstar, but with 4p co-op. Its got a cool shoot em up segment near the end, and the soundtrack is top notch stuff. I guess if you liked Nightmare, you MIGHT like Return? I mean Superstar and Nightmare arent that much different in core gameplay imo.

It eventually made its way to Kmart as well. I think that's where I wound up picking up my copy from, was like $20.

I think you probably would. I'm not a massive Kirby fan outside of the first Dream Land, Adventure (/Nightmare in Dreamland) and Triple Deluxe but I really enjoyed Kirby's Adventure Wii/RtDL. It's pretty straightforward in the same vein as those games and very well made.

The Wii really is an amazing console. I own around 30 physical games, around 20 GameCube games, around 20 downloaded games from VC and WW, and whatever else I couldn't find I found through the Homebrew Channel. I could literally live and die with just the Wii console by itself with its versatile ways of playing games and still not complete my entire collection.

people trend to talk how horrible the VC release schedule was but the first year was actually good since most of the best games came out in under a year.
it's apparent that nintendo blew their load early and that's why the schedule became shit after 2007 was over.

now we have the opposite problem and have a lot of gems missing because they're slow as hell.

Do Wii games look better on a WiiU?

Not really. They might look slightly better on a WiiU, depending on the quality of your TV's scaler, but all the WiiU is going to do is upconvert the image. Some have found that the WiiU also adds a slight green tint to the picture, while others (myself included) have noticed that the WiiU seems to introduce ringing artifacts into the picture.

I think Wii games look much better on the Wii U. Gone is the blurriness. Yes their are jaggies, but overall It is a much cleaner image.

This is my preferred method of playing Wii games.

Really have to import Zangeki no Raginleiv, Project Zero 4 and Trauma Team one of these days.

I honestly love my Wii and there are still so many games I want to buy for it.

Edit: Anyone in here played Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearer (or whatever) ?

I have never seen such a divisive game before, the impressions I´ve read range from "flawed gem" to " absolutely dreadful".

Thread makes me regret that I didn't have money at the time to pick up Pandora's Tower before it became rare and more expensive than I wanted to pay.

I have Xenoblade and TLS though.

Such an underrated system. The Wii has so many great games.

Been collecting Wii games for some time now, and I almost have everything I want now. I "only" have about 20+ games, but I like every single one of them and I'm very happy with the collection. I'll post a picture soon.

+Bayonetta 2 First Print as an extra

Still missing Super Paper Mario, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Project Zero Wii Edition, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Resident Evil the Darkside Chronicles and Kirby's Epic Yarn (though I have previously owned them)

Edit: I'll post Wiiware a bit later too

Unquestionably the most divisive aspect of the Wii, the controller was also what immediately set the system apart from the competition. [...]

As we all know, though, this supposed revolution in control boiled down to "wave your arm in the air like an idiot and watch stuff happen."
This is a bit unfair IMHO if we look at what the worthwhile titles actually brought to the market (ie: let's ignore that waggle was arguably the primary sales driving factor).

I mean, there's absolutely no doubt Nintendo underdelivered with standard wiimote motion sensing; however I believe that it was a revolutionary controller despite this, because its overall design (that includes being split in two parts and most of all, having that IR sensor) allowed the creation of games that were basically impossible on any other "standard" dual analog stick controllers at that time.

Stuff like Zack & Wiki, World of Goo, PES Playmaker immediately come to mind... but thanks to IR we also got AAA gems like Galaxy1/2 (grabbing stars sections, Yoshi...) and of course Metroid Prime Corruption or the revamped Resident Evil 4.

I know I wish I'd never ever have to play an FPS/TPS/RTS with dual analog sticks again... so for me, wiimote IR pointing was a true gaming revolution indeed (even if people might argue that since it didn't become a standard it shouldn't be labeled as such, but still...)

Such a great, underrated console.
Oh and by the way, not only I'd rank its Nintendo first/second party output as - arguably - one of the finest they've ever released, it also became my favourite system ever and the one for which I've bought the greatest amount of games as well.

After two years in their respective life cycle, If I was to compare to Wii and Wii, then I'd have Wii U ahead for sure. I haven't played as many games as I did on Wii, but the quality has been so much higher. Wii was great, but it's a case of quality over quantity in regards to Wii U. There hasn't been a time where I've been desperately hunting for hidden gems or something which slipped through the critical radar. I was doing it all the time when I had a Wii, I bought some stinkers along the way, I even bought a bloody Call of Duty game but we wont dwell on that for too long,

I love the Wii console...just wish I had more time to play the games!

I do have fun collecting all of the random games at the moment though. There is a bunch of games I still want but unless I find them for crazy prices I think I'll just have to be happy with what I have.

My best Wii experience was playing Galaxy 2 on a dualshock 4 at 4k. Wii remote is probably the worst controller I've ever used, and the games look like shit outside Dolphin. Thankfully Dolphin exists so I didn't have to completely ignore Wii.

I have a U and it destroys the Wii. Not even close in terms of controller and games.
