The Waggle-Free Nintendo Wii Appreciation/Collectors Thread

I was gifted Tatsunoko vs Capcom and I never even played it!
Heck I haven't even finished SPM!
When I'll come around to play again with my Wii it's going to be glorious.
I'm beginning to miss my WiiU...

Do yourself a favor and play this game (preferably on a Wii as you can use a Gamecube controller :D ). It's so god damn fun! Plus you get to play as some of the Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman/G-Force characters! That was really the big selling point for me, haha

Amazing library for unique games and experimental titles, that were still fullfledged productions and not merely indie titles that don't even last 5 hours. Too bad almost all of them were ignored.

Still finding stuff I need to this day, despite day1-ing quite a lot of stuff. Currently interested in getting Disaster Day of Crisis. I still gotta get Zack and Wiki and re-buy Little Kings Story and No More Heroes 2 (only borrowed back in the day). I should also get the Klonoa remake.

edit: right, I also always wanted Endless Ocean, damn. And Metal Slug Collection....

Wii will go down as the last console to have an excellent repertoire of mid-budget classics. I have a shit load of games, the only ones I'm bummed about missing out on are The Last Story and Fatal Frame 4, which I suppose I could still buy if I really felt like it. Otherwise I feel like I've got most of the titles which are going to be a pain in the arse to buy further down the line: Fire Emblem, Project Zero 2, Xenoblade, Another Code, Skyward Sword with gold Wii Remote, Metroid Prime Trilogy etc Hell, I've even got Captain Rainbow.

If experience is anything to go by, I'd definitely start buying those missing games sooner rather than later, no doubt we'll have a Gamecube situation in five years where even mediocre games end up costing £40 on the used market.

I don't buy shovelware. I was just commenting about how the Wii attracted so much of it due to its popularity. You figured companies would have learned from the past, but I guess a lot of people wanted to capitalize on the Wii's succes. Which ended up giving the thing a bit of a bad reputation so to say. I didn't have a Wii alone so survived quite well with my games, actually, there are still Wii games that I still need to pick up someday.

All consoles but the least popular attract shovelwares, the more popular, the more shovelware.
Look up at the drek that was released on the Atari/NES/SNES/PSX/PS2 and you'll see what I mean.
Even then there's some games that legitimately look like shovelware and really aren't and there were some incredible experiments too.
I mean look up Go Vacation or We Ski & Snowboard, they're not GOTY material but by god they were really well made.
There's other stuffs that people totally ignored like Blastworks Build trade & Destroy that is really Little Big Shooter complete and working on Wii (and the dev team really slaved on this one and they were THAT awesome having interacted with them for the PAL version....ok I think I was that European that couldn't stop bugging them with it).

The only promise I can make is that eventually I will.
I have 2 Wiis(original with broken disc reader, black that can read discs) and a WiiU I have more than enough ways really.
Seriously if you're only remembering the Wii based on its shovelwares you're missing the mark by more than Joel Shumacher did with Batman&Robin.
there's some games I sold that I really shouldn't have (like weski&snowboard) that I really need to get back and play fully too.
I don't miss Alone in the Dark though.

God-tier OP, and thanks for including Endless Ocean.
Still my game with the longest play time.

I dont a Wii anymore since it really didnt seem to have an advantage over Wii U as far as playing Wii games go...and i've got a cube + component cables, so theres that too. But Wii games still look good via Wii U HDMI (imo...doesnt take much to impress me if its got a cool art style and soundtrack).

People should grab Opoona before it becomes expensive or something. Its got a soundtrack by Sakimoto, which means its a must play.

Also believe it or not, I got Zack and Wiki day one...still havent beat it. On the subject of Arc Rise Fantasia, can you turn off the VA if its that bad?

The Wii was my first console last gen, and I got a shit-ton of good gametime out of it.

Although, I still haven't gotten all the way through my Metroid Prime Trilogy collection. Those games play so well on the Wii.

Me too, still stuck on that stupid last puzzle I believe :/.
Was Arc Rise released in PAL Land, I can't remember seeing it at the time.
Opoona? Not outstanding feedback steered me away from this game...
Another thing that really damp my enjoyment of anything wii, the system memory.
I mean you're limited in how many saves you can have and at a time it was a choice between Eledees and SSBB :/
Seriously fuck that.

another point for the wii is backwards compatibility with gamecube games

This is why I still have mine hooked up, as I can run Gamecube games through Component rather than buying the incredibly expensive Component cable for GC. Yes, it's not quite the same thing, or beats playing GC on a CRT, but it does sure as hell beat playing GC games through Composite or RGB Scart on a HDTV.

If people want some super quirky recommendations which you'll be able to buy for pennies, here's a few:

Opoona
Major Minors Majestic March
Minon: Everyday Hero (or Domino Rally)
Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns Arcade
Blastworks

Great OP. Such a fun system to have, I really wish more western developers did something with the system, but the Japanese stuff is really where it's at.

Cursed Mountain and Deadly Creatures still stand as the most underrated games on the system.

Also, I should buy all those WiiWare exclusives before Nintendo shuts the Wii shop channel down.

A bunch of days ago I actually searched for this thread and wondered if it did exist, turns out it didn't... yet! Great thread buddy!

Will post my collection tomorrow, and also my list of "to buy" games on the system, so you can give me your opinions on what I should prioritize.

But first, I've got a burning question: I've got a soft-modded PAL Wii and I bought No More Heroes US version due to the blood censoring. I thought I could get away with that easily thanks to the region unlocking tools... but last time I tried (two years ago?) no dice: the game works, but appears on screen in a very madworldish black and white. I remember I heard there was no fix back in the day, is that still a thing?

Please don't tell me I have to rip it to HDD... because I have no external drives atm. :(

It isn't the system for which I have the most games, but it's the one I played the most of the 3 home systems last gen by far.
My collection so far stands at 122 physical games and easily just as many digital ones, but I'm still missing quite a few and I'm hoping this thread will help me pick some good ones.

Didn't even realize Kirby's Dream Collection existed since it never came out in Europe.
Guess that will be one I'll import in the near future.
Funny part is that I just bought Kirby's Adventure last week brand new for €50 after falling in love with Triple Deluxe on 3DS. :)

This system got way too much hate and for some reason still does.
If you can get past the SD graphics, it really is a brilliant piece of hardware that is home to a ton of classics and some very unique stuff.

Holy shit. I have like 30 total. I feel dwarfed. Did you play them all? Or are you just buying them to create a comprehensive collection of the best stuff?

Well I don't think I beat you, I probably have around 100. This is an older pic:

My Wii, WiiU, & GameCube Collection (i'm not a colletor)
Wii - 140 retail games/ 40 VC games
WiiU - 24 games (Bayonetta 2 makes it 25)
GameCube - 127 games total

Hey why you got to hate on motion controls? The Wii has shown that motion games can not only be good but in my opinion be integrated well in traditional games well.

As for the Wii it is and almost certainly forever be my favorite console and I have over 120 retail games for it.

Some favorite games include Fragile Dreams, Xenoblade, the No More Heroes series, Mario Galaxy Series, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Brawl and both Zeldas. Games who are all in my personal top ten.

I agree with motion controls being fun, but the default Wiimote should not have been shipped with the console. Nintendo should have made an effort for what was the Motion Plus to have been what was released on day one.

How is Punch Out on a plasma? Or non-CRT in general? Pretty sure the original is unplayable but I assume the new game should be designed for newer, slower displays?

This is beautiful.

I'm almost at your level. I'm missing the blue wiimote/chuk, and red nunchuk and pro controller.

<3 my gold pro controller!

I ended up getting up the blue wiimote/nunchuk from Nintendo for 20$ so you may want to see if they still have them. I did the same for the pink one but I had to buy another battery cover for it since it came with the newer one with the sync button on the outside. They look amazing in person especially the pink one.

They get shit on more so than the other two but I applaud Nintendo for taking a huge risk making the Wii. My son and I co-oped Lego Star Wars 100+ hours and had a blast.

Favorite games, not including the obvious:

Zack & Wiki
Boom Blox
Excite Truck
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Bomberman

Subbed

Holy shit. I have like 30 total. I feel dwarfed. Did you play them all? Or are you just buying them to create a comprehensive collection of the best stuff?

The majority of them, absolutely! :)
Although I rarely ever finish games, just as with all my other systems.
My pile of shame is really a bit embarrassing...

Some of the games that I picked up over the past year that I've yet to play are the following:
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love
Another Code R
Fragile Dreams
Endless Ocean 2
Cursed Mountain
Deadly Creatures
Ghostbusters: The Video Game

Haven't opened Kirby's Adventure yet either, but I certainly plan to do so when I have a bit more spare time.
I don't really buy games to sit on a shelf or something. But due to working 40 hours a week and buying just too many games all the time, there are always some that slip through the cracks. But one day, I'll get to them! ;)

Reginleiv is so godlike. Based Sandlot.

Too bad it never got localized.
Absolutely!

Such a gem in the Wii catalogue.
If there's one game that I'd recommend to people looking to pick up a Japanese only game, this is it. Don't even have to think twice.
One of the systems best!

Really wish I could take some right now, but a huge part of my collection is boxed up in anticipation of moving to a new home.
I might try and get them out this weekend to take a picture of everything put together, but to be honest, looking at some of the pics in here already, it probably wouldn't look too different.

Here's my collection:

There's a handful of doubles because they belonged to my girlfriend before we met. all together there's a little over 60 games there, plus a handful of WiiWare games and a page or two of Virtual Console games.

I'm doing my best to collect what games I can now while they're dirt cheap, especially some of the common ones I never got during the Wii's heyday. For example, I never owned Mario Kart Wii until about 3 weeks ago.

How is Punch Out on a plasma? Or non-CRT in general? Pretty sure the original is unplayable but I assume the new game should be designed for newer, slower displays?

It was pretty unplayable on my old TV, worked around it by playing on the Wii U gamepad.

I'm yet to try it on my new TV, the old one was pretty cheap so I assume it was worse than normal with input lag.

Hahahah, Other M under shovel ware. I don't agree, but that's still really funny. Great OP.

Now is the best time time to build a Wii collection. GameStops and Best Buys still have a huge stock of Wii games, but no shelf space for them, so a lot of quality games are ending up in the bargain bin. You can get most anything for under $15.

Finally, I'd suggest adding a link to the Wii Shop Channel music in the OP. And/or the brentalfloss "with lyrics" version...

Let's see here...

New Super Mario Bros Wii
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2

NPC Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat
NPC Pikmin
Pikmin 2
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Bit Trip Complete

Looking to track down Wario Land: Shake It!, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, along with some 3rd party stuff that I've ignored over the years. I mostly just play Nintendo-published games on their hardware, as I'm sure a lot of people do.

Wii is strange. I accumulated games for it without noticing. I got Sonic Colors for the first time a month or two ago and noticed that I have quite a big collection. Every single game is amazing too.

I'm currently looking at getting Broken Sword Director's Cut, Tales Of Monkey Island, Sam And Max and Another Code R, games which alone would have compelled me to buy the console. They might run like crap but I'm glad Telltale took advantage of what is a perfect controller for point and click games. It really is an amazing console, if they had added a HDMI port it probably would have been more popular amongst hardcore gamers.

Same here. Only thing I'm worried about is being burned by online retailers on eBay or Amazon. I know I could go by user ratings but it's worrisome when all I see are stock photos of the games I'm looking for, if any photos at all.

Klonoa, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Zack & Wiki. Tons of gems on this system. Chocobo's Dungeon is another fun pickup. Subbed for later use. nice write up.

I just bought a JP Wii on ebay (they're pretty cheap, though I have to pay more than what I paid for the system in shipping), I'm looking forward to grabbing some of that region's VC and WiiWare games.

On this note, can we talk a bit more about the Japanese exclusives on the Wii, both on disc and download-only? I whipped up a list of particularly interesting Japan-exclusive VC and WiiWare games on a thread a while back, and it's still a bit irksome to think about all of the great games that we missed out on, and that we got translations for Monster World IV and Sin & Punishment, but never for anything else. And then there were plenty of games that didn't even need translating:

I felt like making myself angry all over again about all of the Japanese exclusives and North American (and usually also European) Wii owners missed, so here's a rundown of what are by my count the most interesting games that are only available on the Japanese Wii Shop[ping] Channel. There are a lot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WiiWare_games

The WiiWare games that [Takoyaki] listed [(Pole no Daibouken, Line Attack Heroes, and Discipline)] are probably the most high-profile Japanese exclusives, but these are interesting too:
Downtown Nekketsu Dodgeball Miracle Kidz Yes No No 800
The most recent sequel to Super Dodge Ball for the NES
Ivy the Kiwi? Mini Prope, Namco Bandai, Xseed Games Yes No No 1000
Cut-down version of former Sonic Team leader Yuji Naka's most recent (released) game, if you don't want to buy the disc retail version
Phalanx Zoom Inc. Yes No No 500
(SNES/Sharp X68000-era also-ran shmup selling for cheap)
Pokémon Fushigi no Dungeon: Ikuzo! Arashi no Bōkendan Nintendo, Chunsoft Yes No No 1200
Pokémon Fushigi no Dungeon: Mezase! Hikari no Bōkendan Nintendo, Chunsoft Yes No No 1200
Pokémon Fushigi no Dungeon: Susume! Honō no Bōkendan Nintendo, Chunsoft Yes No No 1200
I have no idea if this content is or isn't in the Pikachu Mysterious Dungeon disc retail game that came out on Wii, but if you're into Roguelikes, these are probably relevant
Princess Ai Monogatari (no longer available) Sunsoft Yes No No 500
No longer available, but it was the digital version of a manga about a fantasy princess version of Courtney Love, co-written by Courtney Love. This falls into the "500 point morbid curiosity" category
Tsūshin Taikyoku: World Chess
[Available in Europe as the disc game Wii Chess] Nintendo Yes No No 1000

A chess game developed by Nintendo

You didn't mention Virtual Console, but while they're rereleases, some of the original games are hard to find, and most of these are probably better and more interesting purchases:

Famicom
The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu Nintendo December 2, 2006 A

Konami action RPG

Miyamoto's more varied Pac-Man clone, Koji Kondo's musical debut, and the protagonist Tamagon is the original source/beginning of Yoshi's design (his egg cracking will sound very familiar)

8-bit fighting game with Rayman-style limbless robots
Nazo no Murasame Jō (The Mysterious Murasame Castle)[a] Nintendo August 19, 2008 A
This one may be the crown jewel of regional exclusives for the Famicom. Like Zelda 1, but more linear, more action/reflexes-oriented. Japanese-themed Koji Kondo soundtrack.
Atlantis no Nazo (The Mystery of Atlantis) Sunsoft December 2, 2008 A
Dense and confusing platformer that has you searching for hidden treasure and hidden exits, but fun and challenging once you get the hang of it. Maybe an acquired taste?
Takeshi no Chōsenjō (Takeshi's Challenge) Taito March 31, 2009 B
Notorious, funny (funnier if you aren't the target) master-level trolling in game form by actor Beat Takeshi. The 25,000 hits to kill the final boss would probably be easier to manage with the Wii's suspend/restore points.
Akumajō Densetsu (Devil's Castle Legend) Konami April 21, 2009 A
Castlevania III with significantly higher quality audio. The closest the NES/Famicom comes to sounding like an orchestra.
Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zenin Shūgō! (Downtown Special: Its Kunio's Period Piece, Assemble Everyone!) Arc System Works May 12, 2009 A
River City Ransom sequel (prequel?) set in ancient Japan
Final Fantasy II Square Enix June 16, 2009 A
Final Fantasy III Square Enix July 21, 2009 A

The 8-bit versions of these have still never seen any form of release outside of Japan. III is really good.
Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi (Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragons and the Blade of Light) Nintendo October 20, 2009 A
Fire Emblem Gaiden Nintendo November 4, 2009 A

Nintendo's strategy RPGs with permadeath
Ganbare Goemon 2 Konami January 24, 2012 A
Probably the best 8-bit Goemon, structured similarly to Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Super Famicom
Akumajō Dracula (Devil's Castle Dracula) Konami December 2, 2006 A
Out elsewhere as Super Castlevania IV, but this is the uncensored version with the dungeon level filled with blood instead of slime, and a much cooler/creepier title screen
Mario no Super Picross Nintendo December 19, 2006 A
PAL territories got this too. Addictive Picross puzzle game. Lots of bang for the buck.
Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War) Nintendo January 30, 2007 A
Shin Megami Tensei (True Goddess Reincarnation) Atlus February 13, 2007 A

Kyūyaku Megami Tensei: Megami Tensei I・II Atlus July 3, 2012 A

ALL of the SNES Megaten games are present, including the Majin strategy RPGs, and the "Kyuuyaku" remake of the two Namco 8-bit games.
Fushigi no Dungeon 2: Fūrai no Shiren (Mysterious Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer) Chunsoft July 24, 2007 A
Classic roguelike
Panel de Pon Nintendo November 27, 2007 A
The Super Famicom/Japanese version of Tetris Attack is available in Japan, so instead of the "way to go!" N64 Pokemon-themed one, this one is extra girly
DoReMi Fantasy: Milon no Dokidoki Daibouken (DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's Heart-Pounding Great Adventure) Hudson Soft/Konami[2] February 26, 2008 A
This one is out worldwide, it's just really good and the original cartridge is expensive now
Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shōgun Magginesu (Go Goemon 2: The Odd General Magginesu) Konami May 27, 2008 A
Ganbare Goemon 3: Shishijūrokubē no Karakuri Manji Gatame Konami September 15, 2009 A

Japan got 3 of the (really fun) 4 SF Goemon games, instead of just Legend of the Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon 1)

Super Dodge Ball sequel

Mega Drive
The Hybrid Front Sega May 29, 2007 A
Strategy/military sim (one of the last Mega Drive releases in Japan), with really excellent music
Bare Knuckle III: Tekken Seiten Sega October 2, 2007 B
The Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3 is generally accepted to be a much better game (opinions on the randomly-generated music notwithstanding), more nuance to attacks than SOR/BN2
Dyna Brothers 2 Special Sega October 23, 2007 A
Former Japanese Sega Channel exclusive (and the only game on the Shop Channel worldwide that only got a Japanese Sega Channel release), this may be the only way to get this version of the game
Gynoug Nippon Computer Systems May 20, 2008 A
Additional shmup weirdness (albeit less over the top) from the creators of the Cho Aniki series

PC Engine
Gradius Konami August 7, 2007 A
Salamander Konami September 11, 2007 A

Nearly arcade-perfect versions of Gradius and Life Force. Life Force/Salamander doesn't have instant respawning after death in this version though, just checkpoints.
Ai Cho Aniki (Love Super Big Brothers)[a] Hudson Soft/Konami[2] December 18, 2007 A
The rest of the world got the first one, but this is the first one where they really went all out on the camp

Rest of the world only received the first one on Wii
KiKi KaiKai (Mysterious Ghost World) Taito July 8, 2008 A
Arcade conversion of the precursor to the Pocky & Rocky series
Parasol Stars Taito August 19, 2008 A
Sequel to Bubble Bobble (I would argue much closer to the fun of Bubble Bobble than Rainbow Islands was), only Japan got this on Virtual Console
Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu: PC Bangai Hen (Nekketsu High School Dodgeball Club: Bonus PC Version)[a] Naxat Soft September 30, 2008 A
Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu: CD Soccer Hen (Nekketsu High School Dodgeball Club: Soccer CD Version) Naxat Soft November 4, 2008 A

PC Engine versions of Super Dodge Ball and Nintendo World Cup
Cadash Taito November 11, 2008 A
Rastan Saga 2 Taito January 6, 2009 A

Side-scrolling action RPGs, rest of the world didn't receive these on Wii
Dai Makaimura (Great Demon World Village) (SuperGrafx title) Capcom February 3, 2009 A
Arguably a better conversion of Ghouls & Ghosts than the MD/Genesis version, but it has limited continues, making it extremely difficult to complete. Considering that almost no one bought a Supergrafx at the time, I'd assume that the original card of this is probably pretty rare.

Neo-Geo
Waku Waku 7 D4 Enterprise April 27, 2010 A
The weirdest fighting game of the Neo-Geo's expansive and expensive fighting game library.
Flying Power Disc (delisted on December 24, 2013) D4 Enterprise June 22, 2010 A
Also no longer available, but Flying Power Disc/Windjammers is a fun one. Like an evolved version of Pong meets air hockey, Neo-Geo-style. I hear that Giant Bomb loves it.

MSX
Konami put a ton of support in on here on the Wii, and only Japan received any of these. Scrolling on their MSX shmups is supposed to be mostly pretty choppy and weaker than other versions.
Metal Gear Konami December 8, 2009 A
Quarth Konami February 2, 2010 A
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake Konami March 30, 2010 B

Virtual Console Arcade
Namco also released a ton of arcade games on the VCA, but only in Japan. A number of these are the only home releases of the arcade versions.
Solvalou Namco Bandai Games March 26, 2009 A
StarBlade Namco Bandai Games April 21, 2009 A

3D games that inspired awe in 1991, now with motion/pointer controls
Space Invaders Taito April 7, 2009 A
I'd rather be playing Galaga, but this is the actual arcade version instead of a SNES/PCE port.
Numan Athletics Namco Bandai Games April 28, 2009 A
4-player Namco version of Track & Field: Insane edition
Splatterhouse Namco Bandai Games May 26, 2009 B
More violent and better quality audio than the TG-16/PCE version
Rolling Thunder Namco Bandai Games July 21, 2009 B
Rolling Thunder 2 Namco Bandai Games October 27, 2009 A
Phelios Namco Bandai Games July 28, 2009 A

Cosmo Gang the Video Namco Bandai Games August 4, 2009 A
Namco's "Parodius" version of Galaga, fun

Toy Pop Namco Bandai Games November 24, 2009 A
Rompers Namco Bandai Games December 1, 2009 A
Moon Cresta Hamster March 9, 2010 A

So, maybe you dismissed the Wii while it was still alive and kicking. That's OK. Those were trying times, and Nintendo sure as hell wasn't doing anything to help. But give the system another look. There's a shocking number of great games on the platform, and a lot of cool stuff that most people never had a chance to discover.

I came to this realization recently and I finally picked up a Wii for cheap. Also grabbed a copy of Xenoblade and Super Mario Galaxy. Thanks for creating this thread, will look forward to more recommendations moving forward =)

Great thread! The Wii is a gem that unfortunately got buried until a mountain of stinky shovelware.

Here's my small collection:

This thread has me thinking it's about time I hunt down Klonoa, Zack & Wiki, DKCR and Ivy the Kiwi.

Loved the Wii, for a console that is supposed to have no games I think this the the console I own the most games for. Heck and I'm still missing a bunch of classics.
Am I the only one who owns Domino Rally?
