The Witcher (1) now available on Mac, retroactive SteamPlay in effect

My iMac graphics card (Nvidia 9400M) isn't powerful enough to run the game.
So I'm totally skipping it and will go straight to Witcher 2.

Great price, played for a couple of hours, I don't think the game has aged too well. Maybe it takes a while to get into, but I hope this isn't indicative of what to expect with the second game, which I was planning on picking up on the 17th... now I'm not too sure.

update? If you can run it, my Mac can run it!

likewise...im on a 2009 unibody with 4gigs of ram with another 4gb waiting to arrive, but not sure how the core2duo and mobile gpu will handle this, but would really like to play it before playing witcher 2 on 360

It would be great if they also added Steam Cloud support and Achievements, but it's probably too late for that.

Got the game for $2.5 during the winter sale (it was $10 in my region by that time), I'm starting the game as soon as I finish my current playthroughs.

Yeah, no. Witcher 2 was released 5 years later on a completely different engine. It looks and plays nothing like the first game.

I was a little disappointed there's no Steam Cloud as well. I'm in the middle of my first playthrough on my Windows partition, and I would love to be able to continue it on Mac. Has anyone tried copying over a PC save and seeing if it will load, or vice versa?

I guess I'll find out either way when it's done downloading in a few hours.

Yep, downloading this tonight as soon as I get home from visiting the family for the holiday. Can't wait to finally play it.

A warning to anyone thinking about buying this:

Steam has apparently run out of keys, and since it's a Holiday, it probably isn't getting resolved today.

I'm less than impressed with Steam right now. I was hoping to play this afternoon. Very amateurish problem for a supposedly mature service.
Launch the game directly from its directory? Not Steamworks so should launch fine.

I played it this past summer on lowest settings and enduring terrible slowdown, but I fell in love with it.

The beginning parts seem to be pretty polarizing, but I loved the entire game. It really, really picks up after a point, though.

Yes, this works fine. Hardest part is finding the save file location.

Wow, you weren't kidding. The biggest culprit was that I had to start playing the game from the beginning and make a save so Steam would create the proper directory. Or I guess I could have made it myself too. But all's well now and my PC saves work great.

Tried on my mid-2010 13" MBP.

Game runs alright, loading is poor, and visual settings are set to average by default though. There is quite a bit of stutter while playing though, especially as new enemies buffer in or the moment combat is initiated. Things smooth out and it is playable, but it's not exactly the most ideal experience, especially against my relatively older gaming PC(which this game screams on).

That's actually something inherent to the game. No matter what rig you're running it on, the original has some hangups from time to time.

edit: Oh, did you not have those problems at all on your other rig? Interesting!

I think I'm gonna get this and try to power through it before the sequel gets on 360. About how long is it?

If you were to only play story stuff, I would wager around 20 hours. If you play everything, I think you would clock in around 45+ or so.

I thought it was running some kind of emulation because it crashed on me once and the error message was a Windows-style one. I'll try it out with the latest engine and see whether it improves anything.

Runs quite well on my MacBook Pro at 1680x1050 with medium settings.

Edit: Just tried swapping out the wineskin file and now it crashes, even when I switch it back. Time to download all 10GB again and wait for some instructions.

Did you ever get it working properly with the latest engine?

I know squat about this stuff. It's been a LONG time since I've played games on my Mac but I'll probably get the Witcher. I have a 2011 Mini with the discreet GPU and I'm going to need all the performance increases I can get to run it.

Anyone past the swamp want to share a save file if it's possible?

I want to try finishing this before the 2nd hits, but I can't drag through those first two chapters.

I did not know this RPG would have been so long... I am on act II and I am about to call for mercy... at times it fells like fetch quests lol and people complained about Wind Waker :)

must have spent two hours looking for one person not knowing he went some place else

still love this game...

what is the story about keys? When I first downloaded and pressed play I go a pop-up to copy the key it said the game would ask but never did hmmm

I have modded this game a lot. Play as a Dark Elf woman... best things about old PC games are the mods

cannot wait to get my hands on Witcher 2 in a year or so :)

that is the same chip I am running it on now :D

works fine MBP 13"

anyway this game is too good to skip

does this game have an original OT?

I wanted to find out what happens when you are killed in this game, searched but all the results are witcher 2

Can anyone give performance impressions on a Macbook Air 2011? I have the i5 with 4GB RAM. Intel HD graphics only (blah) but I expect it to be at least decent....

Playing on my late 2011 13" MBP, I found this ran appallingly, even on Medium settings. The very first fight in the Prologue was almost like a slideshow.

I've switched to running it in Boot Camp and have everything turned to High with no trouble at all. Pretty disappointing that even CD Projekt are happy to just put a game in a wrapper and call it a Mac version.

The game itself is still enjoyable though.

Why in the hell would you do that, honestly?

Sounds like Bootcamp might be the way to go. Good thing it's Steamplay.

I just opened Steam to be greeted by an unreasonably whopping 1400mb update for The Witcher. Did anybody else get this and if so, wtf? I have a terrible internet connection and am therefore not particularly fond of gigantic updates springing themselves on me when I have no idea what they're for. :(

I had a 193 mb update (windows) yesterday, not sure what it did though. There seemed only speculation on the steam forum.

Edit: just restarted Steam, now it is completely redownloading the game. How about that.

My Steam is downloading what seems like the entire game. It was installed without a doubt, played it last week. Not sure what's happening here.
