The Witcher 2 has sold over 2.2 million copies

The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition was first released on May 2012, it was later released on XBox 360 and Mac in 2012. Before the Mac release the estimates were around 1.7 Million copies in total across PC and XBox Platforms. After the release was expanded to Mac the sales had reached nearly 2 Million in total. Now after the steam and GoG (Good old Games) Holiday sales that had a large 75% discount – the sales increased and surpassed 2 Million sales in total, and leave the new estimates somewhere over 2.2 Million copies sold or gifted in total.

The last time I checked, it was over 4 million for both games.

Awesome for them.

I remember the budget at least for the initial PC release was really small(edit: for the type of project), so I'm sure its even more significant.

That's good, it's a great game. Hopefully more people will check it out after steam sales and buy the next one at launch.

How much marketing did TW2 even have? It seems to me like it was mostly word of mouth at the time of release.

And I think the free Enhanced Edition content proved that free post-release DLC / content is able to stimulate sales and good-will. Other game companies should take note.

This is a sad news, a RPG like Witcher 2 deserve so much more...

Its hardly sad news. Its a good number and another step up in their reputation as a premier RPG studio. Make no mistake, if they can keep the quality high those numbers will only grow for W3/Cyberpunk.

Only played a bit of both so far, only recently bought them for myself thanks to the Steam sale. But from what I've played, they deserve every penny. Hope the success keeps up.

Good for them. I wish the numbers were higher because it really, really deserves it but, if theyre happy with it, then so am I.

Now bring on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077!

I think devs like CDP need to sell the games them self on their website.
I wish there was a way for them to get the money directly.

They do though. Buy it from GoG and its 100% going to CDP. No middle man there at all.

I prefer my games on Steam, but I bought W2 from GoG.com for that very reason as I felt steam stats/cheevo's was a sacrifice they deserved from me personally after the way they conducted themselves with The Witcher's post-game support.

Well, to be fair, I think many WRPG companies would consider 2.2 million copies, around half of which were on sale, to be a failure given the gigantic budgets they wrack up today.

That said, this is a great result for CD Projekt given their cost structure.

Bought it three times.

The 360 version had a lot of posters at Gamestop when it came out. Mostly because it came out at a less popular time of the year, but also because Bamco could afford it.

I tried and didn't care for the first game in the least, so I haven't bothered with the second. Good on 'em, though.

I played a few hours of Witcher 2 directly after Dragon age 2. The jump in graphics (on PC) was staggering. Still the best looking environments in games.

yea the first game sucked but the second one is a lot better in terms of pacing and the level design. You should play it

You are wrong, sir. The first game is one of the best RPG's of the past decade. It had its faults, but its strengths vastly outweighed its negatives.

My main issue with this article is that it provides absolutely no basis for the metrics it used to derive the sales estimate.

it sucked, I hated it more than Final Fantasy XIII. Way too much backtracking in the game, with no speed run option, the level design was bad too..I felt like I was wasting so much time going back and forth, I just had better things to do with my life

Well deserved. I'm not quite in love with some of ways they are telling the story but based on budget, the game is ambitious as hell.

Such an amazing game. I would be curious to see what would happen if Witcher 3 came out early 2014 for the NextBox. That early in a new generation could help them draw in console players who are just looking to play anything on their new console.

Your opinions suck.

Witcher is still a silly translation of the name but the first game is great and the second one... well... I have it, you know. Will play sooner or later.

Too little.

Everyone should be playing it, but to hear that 2.2 million is considered a success is actually good news for us customers.

It's 2.2 million sales, not 2.2 million people that played it. There are more definitely more than 2.2 million people that played it.

Amazing. I want The Witcher 3 now, please.

It will happen, right?

Most likely, yepp.

An opinion can never be wrong.

Why is it silly translation ?

Sapkowski created a new word here which in Polish has close connotation to Witch

Wiedźmin- Wiedźma
Witcher- Witch

Level design was glorious - holy fuck, the village at the beginning of Chapter IV was godly. The forest in Chapter II was incredible. Every location was much more memorable than W2.

Bought this day 1 on 360. Played about 15 minutes and loved it then put it down to play other games in my backlog. Now it sits in my backlog; I need to play this one soon again.
