I played the Witcher 2. And, I already explained why I thought it was bad like Game of Thrones in a previous post. I've seen alot of footage of this game to let me know it's not much better this time around. Also, the voice acting of Geralt seems even worse this time.

It's the Dark Souls 2 effect, reviewers didn't want to get claimed as "casual gamers" so they gave it high scores despite how lame it was. Dark Souls 1 didn't get that much recognition by critics because it was the first one of those games to go multiplatfrom and then later went on to be a niche breakout hit that earned mainstream recognition. This is the same thing, if you think this game is going to get low scores because of it's "hardcore" nature - you know nothing about this industry because it's actually the opposite case. There has been nothing but positive press for this game, from it's consumer friendly DLC practices to CD Projekt Rekts humble uphill climb as a "top tier" developer.

This game has everything that appeals to critics:

Generic white protagonist: Batman wannabe complex, gruff, unshaven, loner, etc.

Bad writing that people pretend/think is good like Game of Thrones (the show)

Tired ass midevil fantasy setting

Story focused game

Slightly above average graphics with a somewhat decent art style

Shitty combat (they praise Assassins Creed year after year, they'll praise this too if the game itself isn't broken.)

All of that is just off the top of my head.

I can see Polygon and Kotaku critiqueing the way sex and female characters are handled but they'll still suck on CD Projekt Rekts dick.

I hope the game is fun but it just looks like a Assassins Creed game if Ubisoft didn't annualize them and also had slightly better writing (but still shitty) and better combat (but still shitty).

EDIT: I forgot to also mention most AAA games this gen have sucked or been underwhelming so that will also play to the games favor of getting a 90+.

To be fair, I'd say it is at least decent writing for a game. Story in games is kinda hard to do well because you don't have full control over what people do. Especially if you are trying to give them choice. Plus you kinda have to have Macguffins to give you a reason to move in a certain direction.

That is honestly just your opinion. Some of us love those settings. Loved it since we were kids. It sells cause there are people who really like that. If you don't, obviously games like this are not for you. It's not cause it's tired, it's cause it's something you don't care for.

I'm really really sick of people saying this like it's a bad thing. Some of us really want story in our game. We want to play a story, not just a game. A game to us is a way of taking ourselves into another world and being able to really immerse ourselves in it.

Here's something to make you gasp, story and atmosphere are what are the most important things to a game for me. For me what I love most in a game is exploration and story (why I love open world RPGs and RPGs in general).

Lolwhat?! Maybe it's not as good as the 2013 showcase but this is total hyperbole right here.

I could see where you would get that (at least from Witcher 2 but supposedly combat here is different. And seeing as how Witcher 1 and 2 had different combat I don't think we can assume it's like AC and never changes its style). I hate target based combat honestly and I could see the link here. Hell, I'll even admit that I preferred Skyrim's combat (that I can see why people complained was bland). But I prefer combat that lets me do the aiming rather than forcing me to tell the computer which combatent I'm aiming at. Skyrim honestly felt like less button mashing (I know that will be a controversial opinion but there it is).

But, it's an RPG, combat is not the main reason I buy it. Though I admit if all RPGs had combat like Dragon's Dogma that would be awesome. But only if they kept what made them good and didn't become like Dragon's Dogma in anything else (it was very weak in a lot of stuff I like about RPGs but the combat was so good that saved it for me).
