The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

They indicate pretty good performance for the PS4: "only occasionally dipping below 30 frames per second, pre day one patch."

That's sound much better then what everyone else made it sound like.

Nearly all the reviews stated it has only occasional frame drops. Not sure how that turned into a big thing. From what I read at least none of the reviews said it was severe or widespread

PC Gamer posted a preview today based on the PS4 version

The Witcher 3 Is Not A Fashion Contest
For those still warm from the glow of Dragon Age: Inquisition or Dark Souls 2, you may be disappointed to hear that The Witcher 3 is all about Geralt. Seems pretty obvious, but you won’t be decking Geralt out in fancy mage gowns or giving him pigtails. You’re a tough guy Witcher and that’s that, and there’s not much satisfaction in seeing him in other, more shiny shades of grey or brown armor. In other words: character customisation is basically non-existent in The Witcher 3, in a cosmetic sense. You can choose not to shave though, which is nice.

Seems an odd thing to say considering how colorful and crazy some of the combinations in The Witcher 2 were, and preview screenies of Witcher 3 showing even more flair and unique designs over other RPGs.

Videogamer seemed to have major issues with it

Its greatest weakness, however, is that in its attempts to create such a deep and complex world, the experience is marred by a stuttering framerate, various bugs, and showstopping loading issues.

But I was constantly taken out of the experience thanks to a frame rate that rarely maintains 30 FPS.

We have seen tons of great looking armor. WTF?

The fact that the XBox 1 is now 900-1080 instead of 900@30fps means its been improved to a steady 30 at 900 and beyond. So its not any kind of stretch that the PS4 is now 1080@30fps without drops

Both DA:I or Fashion Souls had really wide customizations, although DA:I's is spread over many party members.

It's not a review. It might just be that all of the frilly stuff is later in the game.

And really if you actually read the entire section of that part his point is pretty clear about how you're in Geralt's shoes, and not a character that you can tailor in a dozens ways like in character creation led games. He's not speaking just about clothing options.

Not true at all.

Vandal's hilarious Google translation review (the point remains):

But on the other hand we have a technical section that has disappointed rather , for concrete version of PlayStation 4, which is the only one we could play for this analysis . Maybe it rains it pours, but we were commenting for some time that this title would be a great test for the new consoles, and they have not entirely overcome, or at least not with flying colors. We do not know how much the fault of hardware limitations or CD Projekt has failed to take full advantage, but difficult to assimilate a new generation game awaited as this can not maintain stable 30fps .

Day and night cycle leaves us pictures as beautiful as this.
We do not ask the always coveted 60fps, and we did not have minded to sacrifice 1080p resolution (in the case of PS4), but at least the minimum that we asked a game nextgen is to have a rate reasonably stable images, and it is far from it, with declines in all situations , be it rare to remain at 30fps. For example, in the first stage of the game, White Garden, one of the least complex polygonal, the game is pretty good, and only lowered notes when fighting. But as you progress through the adventure and explore increasingly complex scenarios play in the rain or get to the big city of Novigrad, increasingly upset over the slowdowns, constant during the fighting, which comes to affect gameplay , spoiling for example timing when to dodge attacks.

We must clarify that we played without the patch day one , which is supposed to fix and improve a few things, such as performance, but we have to talk about what we tested, and we can not make a faith act. The truth do not expect miracles in terms of performance improvement, at least not for now, since there seems to be something simple to fix, considering that are downloaded from framerate sometimes very serious. If when the game is launched and we test with the patch one day a substantial improvement in performance occur, we will be the first to tell you about it and celebrate it.

LaPS4 Google Translation:

And, before we talk about the positive points of visuals, it should be clear that the game has a problem in the rate of frames per second . Basically, the more items on display there, more consistent is the fall; although we could detect these failures at the beginning of the cinematic sequences (created by the game engine itself) for no apparent reason. The result is that the project of CD Projekt in PS4 rarely runs stably at 30 frames per second promised , something that blurs somewhat the experience and sometimes point may even affect the gameplay. Not to mention some popping to ride and some graphics glitches we encountered occasional. . The latter much less severe than previously commented have to also clarify several things.

GamesRadar:

Tragically, all of these areas suffer from chronic framerate issues on the PS4 review build provided. CD Projekt RED included a letter promising that optimisation continues and a 'day zero' patch will fix things, but it's possible some of these problems will remain immediately after launch. The jerkiness seriously affects the fluidity of combat, and sporadic slowdown appears in cutscenes, and particularly in dense areas like the Velen bogs during graphically intense weather conditions like rain storms.

Play your cards right

There are so many aspects of The Witcher 3 I'd love to talk about that won't fit into the main review: the quests for legendary armour, the blueprints that let you craft great gear or brew better potions. The main one is Gwent, a card game that almost everyone in the Northern Kingdoms plays. You can challenge merchants, blacksmiths and warlords to games so you can win more cards, build better decks and challenge the world's masters. It's deep, and stupidly addictive.

The slippery framerate exacerbates issues with the combat system, which remains largely unchanged from the Witcher 2, and has inherited all of its problems.

Videogamer:

Such technical issues are a heavy price to pay for CD Projekt Red's other accomplishments. I loved exploring every inch of its world. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to every inhabitant in every bizarre bog, thanks to the incredible facial animation and excellent voice acting. But I was constantly taken out of the experience thanks to a frame rate that rarely maintains 30 FPS. Whether I was riding Roach, Geralt’s trusty steed, around the wastelands, taking on hordes of ghastly creatures, or simply having a chat in a pub, the experience was never truly stable. I consider myself pretty tolerant of framerate hitches (I’m the guy that gave Bloodborne a 10, after all) but in The Witcher 3 it's such a persistent issue that it hampers everything else the game tries to achieve. A huge shame, as elsewhere the game mostly verges on the sublime.

Really hoping this day one patch works some miracles, but I'm not holding my breath.

Oh yeah we got this shipment in our Best Buys.

Steel book for The Witcher 3!!!

Be Wary that this steel book is different from the Collector's Edition which is pretty much sold out now.

Got my copy preordered! I have to remember to call my local Best Buy to see if they're doing a midnight launch. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.

The armor sets in all the Witcher titles are absolutely amazing. I greatly enjoy playing dress up with Geralt, crafting new sets, finding new sets, etc. He's such a bearded badass!

I completely agree. I nerd out on the stitching and the coat laces. Best, most detailed armor in any videogame ever.

So does performance not come into play during the review process? Because if it does and the performance is such an issue yet the reviews are as good as they are... Then holy shit for those who get to play it without any performance issues. Hopefully that day one patch works out some of the FR problems

console? BB doing $10 reward credit with preorder and it stacks with GCU. OR Target giving away copy of guide with every purchase.

PC? get a nvidia code from B/S/T or ebay

Thanks, but I'll be getting it on PSN digitally. It's easier for me that way. I'll get it for PC later, when some desirable mods show up.

The day one patch stuff is strange. Some outlets say they got it while others say they didnt. Gerstmann said on the Bombcast that they got a note that says the day one patch is already on the disc.

I suppose it doesn't matter since the patch CDPR's been working will be the actual day one patch regardless.

Is there any kind of co-op in this? I really don't like open world games because they take too much time and require a lot of investment from the player and too complex. But this game looks really good. I am looking for reasons to give this a try. I love the souls series and action RPGs. Is this like souls series but in open world?

I haven't a clue where I should ask this question , so I'll ask it here instead of making a new thread. Does anyone know if you preorder the PS4 digital version on Amazon.com if they give out the code before release so you can preload or do they only give them out on release day?

No, not at all.

It seems punishing like the Souls series, however.

I wonder if they will go the RDR route. They showed off that female Witcher after all.

No way will they kill Geralt. I don't think even a single ending will feature his death.

Plot seems set up to conclude like this, just going off of basic epic fantasy tropes:

With the reluctant backing of Nilfgaard's army, Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and Triss have a dramatic last stand against Eredin and the Wild Hunt. It's an even fight until Eredin pulls some Super Saiyan space elf shit and injures everyone. Geralt goes 1v1 against Eredin, beats him in-game, but ends up losing in the cutscene due to BS. Eredin is about to kill Geralt when Ciri agrees to surrender. Geralt tries to stop her, but she offers him some cool parting words.

Eredin, grinning like a madman, creates a portal to his realm and yells "koi, Shirri!" while opening his arms wide. Ciri walks by Geralt, turns green from her blink magic and charges towards Eredin. Ciri passes by Eredin in an instant and uses her awakened space-time magic to destroy the portal, severing the Hunt's connection to this universe. Eredin shouts "B-bakanaaaaa!!!!" as Ciri passes him, in awe of her ability. Geralt uses this moment to dash towards Eredin, who quickly turns to face him, shouting "Gerrrraltooooo!!" Geralt shouts "Raaaaaagh!" cuts him in two. And also he explodes as his two halves hit the ground.

Ciri wakes up in a strange world of cyborgs. Geralt retires.

(But seriously, I'd bet that most of this happens. Possible variables being more/fewer casualties based on how much Nilfgaard/the Northern Kingdoms support you, whether you resolved the love triangle amicably, whether Ciri has any desire to live given how poopy her life has been up until now, and how much Japanese Eredin uses.)

Basically, there are a couple points in the story in which you'd need to complete certain side quests, but other than those, you can go back and do whatever you want after the credits roll. And there are some high level monsters / quests that seem to be intended for post-story play.

Oh cool, thanks!

The steel book still has the OST and other bonuses of the regular edition, right?

I hope I can acquire the Kinslayer's armor, or some variant in this game. It was by far my favorite armor set, but I've only seen pictures of it because I never beat Dark Mode!

Has ultra spec for PC been shown yet? I know there were previews of the PC build but I don't know if it was running on the highest settings.

Some people said that the youtuber event footage was captured at High settings. Some people say that it was Ultra.

My feeling? We'll have to wait until release to finally be confident in what Ultra looks like.

Keep an eye out on the PC Hi-Res Image thread after the game is released.
