It was well done but a few segments dragged a bit too much. The segment with the city was awesome though. Glad trololol made it.

The lightning of the cauldron was meh.

Or, you know, maybe it just wasn't that great.

Watching it right now on CBC seems pretty good so far, loving all the wirework and the display on the floor. I missed a lot of it but recorded it to DVR so will watch from start when it's all done. Obviously everyone says the new one isn't as good as last the opening ceremony. Also, the empty lower level was for athletes to be because they still needed the floor for the second half of their ceremony.

I am seriously thinking about finding a VPN to use so I can watch CBC replay of the ceremonies.

Do it. You'll be able to watch everything live, and I'm quite impressed with CBC's web player. There's overlays so you can find out who's currently competing, the standings, the startlist, etc. You can click on the timeline to watch what previously happened, and there's a button to go back to watching live. There's also a quick replay button to jump just 5 seconds back. And it's very responsive. Only issue is the variable bitrate thing. It's usually in HD but it will automatically drop to SD or worse if your connection starts going bad.

Amazing.

Also, I missed the ceremony. D'oh.

Honestly it was an OK opening ceremony, but it's not a ceremony I'll be remembering for many years like Beijing. Of course, that was just insane.

I'm watching the replay of the opening ceremonies. I would KILL to get CBC commentators for the US feed. It's shocking to me how bad NBC is compared to BBC or the CBC.

It's awesome I love that the CBC stream is just the tv feed with commercials and everything. ( in the us all the live streams stop until the feed is back)

Going to be tough to match China. They spent so much (most of Russian costs were corruption as opposed to elaborate staging and stuff), plus they are authoritarian in how they operate. The man responsible for those games said only North Korea could beat them in the synchronization and training capabilities. China was trying to prove something, the rest not so much in a sense. We'll probably not see something like 2008 Beijing for a while.

I can't figure out how to navigate the live extra site. A lot of stuff just redirects to nbcolympics.com with articles and stuff. I remember it being super easy for London..

I curled for 17 years. Pretty damn good at it too.

In Canada curling is a widespread recreational sport. Like bowling. There are clubs in most every city and town. Not sure what the numbers are now, but when I was playing there were over a million Canadians that curled.

I wanted to join a curling club in Scranton. But I keep putting it off. Maybe I'll go and do it... new years resolution or summing

Oh I totally agree. It's obvious Beijing's ceremony was truly just unparalleled, it was probably one of the craziest opening ceremonies of anything ever really. True insanity. Russia's had some really nice stuff (the city part #1), but they were also married to some pretty unimaginative elements and some parts that dragged on forever. Overall, it was an OK show, but not one that blew me away or anything.

Man, that Russian National Anthem, sounds exactly what a Russian National Anthem should sound like.

The parade of nations with the globe on the floor and the floor opening was pretty cool.

A reminder to you fine folks, some interesting events tomorrow and the first medal events. Particularly recommended? Biathlon 10km sprint. And the skiathlon with ski change is an intriguing event.

Later at night Russian time the men's slopestyle (snowboard) finals. The rest: http://www.sochi2014.com/en/daily-schedule-day-2

What time eastern is snowboard slopestyle tomorrow? It says 9:30 but I don't know if that is am or pm.

With the official app you can set it to your local times.

Apparently the Olympic flame went out something like 46 times on its way to Sochi. Putin, of course, has demanded police to investigate the man who designed it.

That's awesome. I love watching curling, and really regret not being introduced to it when I was younger. It might be my favorite sport to spectate, and maybe some day I'll take a stab at it myself.

Was CBC broadcast altered when one ring didn't open? Or just Russian one?

Wait what? One ring definitely didn't open when it was supposed to. News stories from around the world mention the glitch, it wasn't just the CBC broadcast. It's possible they got the ring to open later, I didn't notice.

On Russian broadcast when rings started increasing, tv people cut to rehearsal footage with all five rings intact. Producers confirmed. So what i'm asking, did it happen on other channels or only in Russia?

Oh, I see what you're asking. I watched the CBC broadcast, and it wasn't altered. No idea about other channels.

I have to give to American TV Networks, you can cut some damn hype pieces of audiovisual material.

They make it look so beautiful.

My anger at Russia is slowly disappearing every time I see some mountain shots. If only I were white so I could visit without being scared of having my ass beat for going outside :(
