Why the fuck has this bitch been talking about politics nonstop for nearly 10 minutes?

This is the olympics...LEAVE IT man.

Because Politics/geo politics Is a GIANT FUCKING part of the history, which is being shown through this...

WTF are people complaining about???

The social and political happenings of a country IS the history a country. It'd be more awkward if they tried to avoid it....

Time and place.

Yeah there is a time and place. The time is now, the place is Russia, where they have a horrible human rights record.

"Here are some of the most epic Olympics opening we've seen, now let's talk about how Russians were the bad guys".

Is this the problem that everyone has with NBC's commentary?

If so, should we just look at the pretty lights and ignore Russia's terrible policies and corruption?

This isnt the Today Show. I dont need Matt giving me a history lesson while I try to watch an opening ceremony. People who have ever taken a history class and with eyes can see exactly what is going on. We dont need some third grade pseudo-interpretation from Matt and his buddy about what happened during the soviet era or what they are trying to show in this.

My problem is that it feels like I'm in a movie theater and some Rude people are having a conversation next to me. I want to slap them silly.

Oh, I wasn't aware that was what the Olympics were for. Thanks for clearing that up.

Edit: it's not that they're talking about Russia's terrible policies, it's that they're talking at all.

They can can talk about it, it still won't change a thing.

We have close Russian friends who currently live in Moscow. They and everyone else know Russia is politically corrupt place, regardless, the Olympics are about unity, sportsmanship and competition. So to the NBC commentary, I say, we get it.

Opening ceremonies ARE a history lesson, WTF are you talking about...

The commentary add great context to what was being shown, how the hell are people against that? Plus they(the Olympic host) PROVIDE commentators with a "play-bill" so they can commentate with the ceremony...

Yes.

Think about it this way - if the US was having an opening ceremony, would you really want the commentators to talk about how it was skipping over killing the natives, slavery, the Civil War, Japanese internment, the use of the atom bomb, Jim Crow, beating John Lewis nearly to death, the assassinations in the 60s, 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq, and the financial collapse? Or would you just rather watch the ceremony sans commentary, which is how it was designed and how everyone else is seeing it?

Bingo!

There isnt a single person around the world that doesnt know whats really going. We've heard about it nonstop on NBC for months now. We dont need more while people are trying to enjoy the opening show.

Why even show shit then? Why not just have a blank screen with Matt and his buddies talking nonstop.

This isnt some cricket match. Its like someone talking over a movie. We want to view it for what it is, and then you can give context later. It tells the story if you watch without hearing Matt talk.

That's fine, but commentary isn't always needed. Often times they are talking over the actual performance.

If I was at a play / opera / ballet, I'd be pretty pissed off if someone next to me kept commentating. Kind of takes you of experience.

Especially when they say stupid shit.

Yeah I'd be fine if a foreign country had that kind of commentary if America put on a jolly little show about conquering the Americas, working hard to profit ourselves, fighting against the evil Southerners, our responsible role in WWII, our overturn of segregation, and our resilient political and financial systems. Edit: I'd be fine if a domestic station had that kind of commentary I just know it wouldn't happen
