The Year is 2005

360 wasn't out until November and the launch games kinda sucked. I'm definitely not counting that as a reason 2005 was good.
Call of Duty 2 had the dust of the door that was being shot doing twirls as the bullets went through it in 2005. It doesn't get any more next gen than that.

2005

Back when everyone was saying the 360 was Xbox 1.5, and developers couldn't stop making shitty open world GTA clones.

Fuck 2005

What happened? Izi: corporization and gaming reaching mass media.

The moment corpos realized that games were making a morbilion dollars they wanted to explode it, but because they never undertand what videogames are they just do what they known to do: standardization and push for mainstream media. Before 2008-2009 everyone where doing their own crap, now every companies just follow whats popular and try to make it to the stream circles: The CoD clones wanna be era (Halo 4, Syndicate), the MOBA/e-sport Leage of Legends wanna be era (Halo 5, CoD from these years, and many others games that lived and died like battleborn) and now the live service era where everything is a job and everything has to be like Fortnite (Warzone, Halo Infinite [343 are the perfect example of this], Gran Turismo).

Just as modern day example of standarization: just look at game controllers right now, they are all the same, the more unique is the dual sense of Playstation but barely any dev use it. If you want to properly use the track pad you must connect your PS4/5 controller to Steam and then add functions like menus, clicks, etc. Back in 2005 they tried to do their crap, now is to be next hit. And this is sadly something you can see on today consoomers, another somewhat recent example: Final Fantasy XIV v1.0, it was practically a remake of FFXI with all its design choices, is has its issues, but it was salvage (lets not pretend like ARR is good, btw), but instead of working on something unique they trash everything and transform it into a WoW clone. And people praise it for it, they choose mediocre thinking instead of having something unique, is not like WoW servers are close or anything.

The best thing about 2005 for me was God Of War and playing Spikeout on Xbox LIVE
I've enjoyed this year as much if not more, and it's not over yet

For me the 360 didn't get going until March 2006 and the release of GRAW

Great times, Yeah ... You had 360's melting and the so-called super consoles that could barely handle 30 fps.
The jump from PS2/Xbox to Gears of War, tho

Didnt give a shit if it wasnt a locked 30 fps, that was a playable movie

Or playing Bioshock intro and realising it was real time

Basically, late stage capitalism advancing, all that matters are mega corps squeezing every cent possible from the plebs for the shareholders, you can't have anything too creative or experimental, it might not make a gajillion, make everything as similar as possible, disneyfy everything. Same with music, movies, TV.
It's depressing.

Because they were shooting for the stars with facemelting graphics. Most console players weren't obsessed with framerate therefore we had proper jumps between generations.

I'm not talking about strictly 2005 releases, but rather the people we had working in the industry. The amount of S tier visionary talent. 2005 just looked good nestled between Half Life 2 and Crysis, with the simplification and price reduction of PC gaming and impending breakout success of the PS360Wii generation about to unfold.

I remember that time well, and the years before and after. Hl2, doom3, far cry, bloodlines, civ4, medevial total war 2, sound blaster audigy/xfi then Vista killed that... $399 Nvidia 8800gts which could play crysis. Amd athlon64, Intel core2duo.

In the next 5 years.... PS3 knocking it out the park with killer exclusives after getting 2 strikes and faltering, making a miraculous comeback, and 360 getting run after run only to be trounced in the last inning. Wii dominating in sales but not in hearts and minds.

The mmo phenomenon was also in full effect. Wow, Eq1, Everquest 2, city of heroes, lotro, connan, etc.... Fps after fps fear, bf2, dead space, etc....

What happened indeed. It's not just games like you said movies too, but also music. Rock and metal are all but dead outside of indies and old timers or gen xers like me. The next gen fumbled the ball. Gen z never picked it up. The internet and too many good games left people distracted from making art.

Plus Cars and phones looked better
IPhone didn't come out for 2 more years and galaxy not for another 8 or so.

We had candybar and flip phones. Motorola Razor and Sony Walkman w810i. Etc..

And part of the issue is the phones brought internet to the masses which is part of the problem.

It is the year 2005. The treacherous Decepticons have conquered the Autobots' home planet of Cybertron. But from secret staging grounds on two of Cybertron's moons, the valiant Autobots prepare to retake their homeland.

But apparently the PS2 was an 60FPS monster LOL.

Unreal 3 wasn't a great engine on the consoles IMO and there are a number of games now that Impress in real time. The best thing about 2005 was I still in my 20s (just). I enjoyed all the console gens so far....

I miss the days when game creators were edgy and cool. They even looked cool wearing nine inch nails shirts and listening to industrial techno music. Now most of creators are woke sissies. I dunno back then gaming just had this vibe and edge to it that I really can't explain. I kinda miss the days when gaming wasn't so mainstream.

What? lol

There was nothing touching Gears of War's graphics in 2005. Bioshock also impressed at the time.

And by the end of the X360 cycle, some of the best looking games on the console were released on UE 3. Including Gears of War 3, considered to go toe-to-toe againt the best from the PS3.

You can have your opinion, of course, but its an uncommon one to say the least.

What does ps2 have to do with what I said? It might have been a 60 fps monster and at the same time generally players were not obsessed with framerate like nowadays.

People cared about frame rates then Sega Rally 2 frame rate was always highlighted and we went from many games being 60fps on the DC and PS2 to loads being 30 (if that) on the so called super consoles like 360 and PS3

I thought GRAW looked better than the 1st Gears, it was Bioshock art direction that really won the day IMO
I've always thought Capcom MT Framework engine was such a better multi platform engine myself. Lost Planet 2 looked insane and much better than the Gears games and speaking of Gears games, I always thought Binary Domain looked better and played better than Gears 1 or 3. Gears 2 was awesome, I will admit

That's not a pisstake or meant to wind you up btw.

There might have been some people that cared about framerate but don't tell me it was like nowadays, not even close. Most of us were glad if the games were more smoother than a slide projector and were in awe of the constant innovation in every sense. Who cared about framerate…

I start saving up for the Bitcoin launch and smash both girls I dated that year again. In fact, I smash everything I can.

In my near-permanent state of post-nut clarity, I play Resident Evil 4, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Shadow of the Colossus, and Radiata Stories to pass the time.

Edit: I didn't read OP. I just wanted to time travel.

Not really frame rates started to get important in the 32-bit era and was an easy piss take against the N64.

The major difference back then was no social media or YouTube thumbnails

I miss when AAA developers were rockstars. Too much money made its way into this business and these legacy studios which diluted their image and culture from within. Fat cats and moneybags will obviously disagree since they managed to get their clutches onto some renowned studios and publishers while getting a bargain out of it. Of which they're in the midst of sucking these studios and publishers dry for money until they reach their "peak".
