Theresa May to campaign to take UK out of ECHR in 2020 election

Theresa May will put plans to pull out of the European Court of Human Rights (EHCR) at the heart of her campaign for the 2020 general election campaign, after ministers conceded that reform plans have been delayed by Brexit.

The Prime Minister is understood to be backing plans to “lift and shift” human rights enshrined in the European Convention and write them into UK law.

Mrs May’s plans go further than those drawn up by her predecessor David Cameron because they will give the Supreme Court the final say over how the rights are applied.

However, sources said she has decided that she cannot start that fight with the prospect of negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union set to dominate Parliament over the next few years.

A senior Government source said: “We would have been looking at having a huge row with a Parliament to get through the Cameron plan and we might even have failed.

“A clean break is by far the best option and, if we put it in the manifesto, even those Tory MPs who are squeamish about the idea will have to get behind it.

“A manifesto pledge also means the Lords will have to let it through eventually. All the signs are that the Prime Minister is up for this.”

Britain to be like Belarus in the "European countries not signing up to the ECHR" league table if this comes to pass. Even Russia is a signatory. I'm definitely not comfortable with the idea of removing an impartial layer of protection for citizens' rights.

If there's one thing I hate, it's all the rights I have as a citizen and employee.

Been waiting forever for someone to.come and start messing with them.

Can't wait.

Every time I read about something in UK politics I get confused; thinking is THAT really the issue they should be focusing on?

Can't have that odd bad person having human rights among 50 million people, down with our rights. People are morons. They see some evil twat we can't deport and going through the courts so throw the baby out with the bath water to solve it. May wants that and more to fuck us over with.

"Well, my rights will be fine, but now we will be able to go after those immigrants." said everyone voting for this.

So do they seriously expect all these fascist ideas to not lead to civil war.

It'll lead to a large parliamentary majority, with the current state of British politics.

Part of me thinks this is a move to get Labour voters to vote Lib Dem..

The worrying thing is everyone will look at brexit as an example of basically nothing going wrong as the effects of brexit potentially won't have even kicked in yet

It's likely all the people who voted brexit in a slightly ignorant way will basically do the same again which is incredibly depressing

Cameron government has been publicly stating this was their goal for what, years now?

And we voted the Tories in twice, then voted for brexit so..........This is what we want?

So even after Brexit, UK politicians will still blame Europe for all of their country's problems. That is beyond pathetic.

I sure hope this leads to a game of oneupsmanship between the US and the UK to see who can do the stupidest possible thing to fuck people over wooooo

I'd actually thought she'd backed down on that prior to putting her name forward as a candidate for prime minister. While I'm not surprised that she'd want to do it - the ECHR has long been a target of hers - I am surprised that it's suddenly back on the table.

Unfortunately, the Conservatives could announce that strangling nurses is now official party policy and still expect a large majority in the next parliament. Hyperbole, sure, but not to the point that I'd like it to be.

It will work too.

It doesn't matter how beneficial the ECHR is, people just want to break with everything the current society is consisting of.

"It's a voluntary agreement between nations that's been in practice for over half a century? BUT THATS HOW WE GOT INTO TROUBLE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! I SAY WE REJECT IT!"

The above paragraph doesn't make a lick of sense, but that's a dominant thought process of many people these days.

Damn, UK just one up'd America. Republicans just want to remove rights from minorities and women, but these guy want to remove all human rights.

Don't fear, May will keep human rights for rich people but she doesn't want to exclude poor white kids when she brings in The Hunger Games.

Why is this a thing? What's the (political) goal here? Take the UK out of the EHCR, but basically write it into UK law.. seems pointless?

It is stopping them from removing pesky things like privacy. They don't want encrypted WhatsApp conversations for instance.

So after Brexit blows up in May's face over the next two years, the Tories are going to campaign to leave the ECHR?

This seems quite a silly decision.

After seeing how bad she's bungling the whole Brexit thing, I'm not 100% sure she'll be able to get her wish.

That is, of course, assuming that Labour gets their shit together. Which may be too much to expect from them.

Well it's easier to make "adjustments" if there is no comparison to the EHCR but only the UK law

They'll just blame the EU and win a majority

It's a shame but i think there won't be many labour party wins all over europe in the next 5-10 years.

If it's the UK, Germany or France or other EU countries most of them are a disaster at the moment

From the comments:

"This delay - and with it the message that we still cannot protect our way of life against immigrant outrage - is totally unacceptable. The abuse of our laws by "human rights" activist lawyers is a total scandal."

-John Glenville-Downing

These people vote.
