[TheVerge]Phillip W. Spencer III isn’t retiring as the chief of Xbox ‘anytime soon’

Phil Spencer needs to go in my opinion. He has really not done much for Xbox since he took over and, in fact, has contributed to the platform becoming a whole lot less exciting and, for me, redundant altogether as a console since I play the few decent Xbox games on my PC anyway via Steam (I refuse to use that awful Xbox app and even cancelled my GamePass Ultimate subscription back in May 2024). I will be selling my Xbox Series X, which has been unused for 18 months, in the coming months. Xbox as a console platform no longer exists in my eyes, it's a platform basically on life support at this point.

I'm curious who the fall guy is going to be, does Bond or Spencer survive. Who pushes who under the bus? I feel like Bond has been setup to fail and Phil is almost untouchable at this point.

Quite expected. Most likely, in the best traditions, they will also issue a bonus at the end of the quarter, for positive reporting to investors, everything as we like...

Don't mean to be "mean", but don't highly paid execs bear some responsibility for poor performance.

People are getting laid off because of it.

But yeah, nothing really new here.

Accountability often does not exist.

forget poor performance, even a successful exec would be rotated by now in a healthy company.
these morons stuck to their chairs like 3rd world dictators.
all the better for collapse of xbox i guess, they deserve each other.

For real. Xbox executives are supreme court justices. Appointments for life.

Mattrick: Killed off Ensemble Studios and Microsoft's PC gaming efforts in general.
Spencer: Revived Age of Empires and Microsoft's PC gaming efforts.
Who would have thought that Mattrick was a more balanced leader than Phil.

It was obvious from the moment he cancelled scalebound and started to put the emphasis on how games are delivered as opposed to making great games... That was very early on.

Phil is not technically running Xbox anymore. He is running Microsoft Gaming. Sarah gets the honors of getting blamed when they eventually shut Xbox down.
yeah the teflon-man jumped ship to a new title right after completely sinking the previous one.
for real this dude must have orgy tapes of whole ms brass or something.

Why would he?

Dude has been failing upwards in an organisation that consistently fails to hold him accountable for any of his disastrous business decisions.

If you worked for an employer and consistently fucked up on your job, but instead of firing you they continued to promote you... would you retire? Of course not.

Spencer represents the epitome of "Fuck you, got mine!" to Xbox fans and the integrity of Xbox as a gaming platform. And that mofo Matt Booty is not far behind him.

I still believe(IMHO) Phil will retire just after(or possibly just before) next box launch. Sarah Bond replaces. Otherwise nothing makes sense. Even more sure since the layoffs, but of course this is just my guess. Phil's legacy deal is done. There is nothing else for him at Microsoft. Him staying hurts Bond's career. I think he'll leave as soon as he can. Bond announced the next hardware with biggest generational leap language. The nextbox is hers imho. Phil MAY stay after launch to give her the ability to scapegoat him if it fails. /remindme 1 year

Killing off Microsoft's PC gaming efforts and valuable IPs like Age of Empires is not what I would call "balanced".
His approach to console gaming made more sense (flawed, but may have worked out much better than whatever Phil ended up doing).

PC gaming would also be much better off without MS buying, studios, publishers only to kill off the IPs these studios/publishers had created. Saving Age of Empires is a pretty small upside given all the damage they jave done (Activision, ID, etc. All at the mercy of these idiots).

Well, that's in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

If he continues to age at the rate he's going, he won't be around in ten years at all.

Of course, same could he said for Xbox itself.
That's depressing bro, I've seen it in real life. As an entrepreneur, I help many entrepreneurs to be healthier to stay around longer. I'm already ahead of Phil and Randy in real life at this point.
