Things gamers used to say but reality proved wrong

Sony believing in generations, how naive we were...

I thought microsoft buying bethesda could have helped with their shitty games to at least have some money spended in betatesting, lol, lmao even tier of delusion on my part, starfield was as broken as ever.

Capgod can't do wrong, then procede to produce 2 of the biggest let down of the year back to back with dogma 2 and wilds.

Switch 2 with nvidia hardware is gonna have dlss to save the day...
That's why I avoid preordering or day one purchases cause even Randy, the way he talks is dirty.

Just this generation alone:

Console sales don't matter anymore.

Exclusive games don't matter.

Game pass is the future of gaming.

Sony must create a day one competitor to Game pass or they won't survive.

Sony may survive this gen but when activision games are exclusive it's over.

Haha see It's okay Phil said it's just 4 games nothing more.

Series X hardware will be 40-50 frames faster than PS5 in all games.

Series S will beat PS5 once devs utilise its advanced features.

Series S will sell best because it's cheapest and has game pass.

Starfield will be the game of the generation.

Ps3 has no games.
This was a big one back then. The majority of their party titles were worse on PS3 during the early years, launch titles were pretty lackluster, and then that first party lineup come 2008-2012 ate whatever Xbox had for breakfast. Instead of trying to keep the momentum of the first few years, Xbox lost its way and decided to commit seppuku with Kinnect bollocks. They've been in the same poor decision making ever since.

This sounds like someone who is disturbingly obsessed in Microsoft vs Sony lol

Megadrive was leagues below the SNES, but during my time here at NeoGAF my opinion changed, it was a capable system, despite the SFX chip it had...but it had it's very own Starfox, minus a Super FX chip 3 YEARS before Stafox, a.k.a Star Cruiser

"Pc is a platform in decline." After 2005

"There is no market for dedicated handheld anymore". After smartphone became a thing

Lmao 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Hard disagree on the first one (though it seems like I'm in the minority).

I miss unique, bespoke experiences designed specifically for handhelds like GBA, PSP, etc. I don't have any interest in playing gimped versions of big games. Nothing better than getting Metroid Prime on GameCube and Metroid Fusion at the same time. Two amazing, completely different experiences designed around the hardware they appeared on.
Exactly this, when I play AAAA games I want to play them on the best hardware possible...

The TV experience is the 80% of gaming time, but that 20% away from your couch experience is invaluable to have as an option.
I'm pretty much the exact opposite. 80%+ handheld mode for me. I only play on TV for local multiplayer, or games I REALLY want to enjoy the full glory of the game during its big story beats, like the Xenoblade games (I know they're currently still limited to Switch, but if/when they get Switch 2 upgrades, this comment will become more relevant).

'EA Sports - it's in the game'

Well I played NHL 26 and there was no:

1. Welcome to the Jungle before a face off:
2. Coaches shouting at officials:
3. Fans winding up players in the penalty box
4. Players skating around looking up at the jumbotron chewing their mouthguards at every break in play; and
5. Bill Clement on color commentary…

… so this is bullshit.

The HDR is shit as well - the colors are all off.

This is missing context though. During the 2000s MMO boom, MMOs were being made by nearly every publisher. Everyone saw it as the future way of interaction in gaming. There were literally too many of them being made for an audience that had reached it's peak and was slowly bleeding numbers near the end of the decade.

F2P MMOs were dying by the dozen during the 2010s because they were no longer the popular genre, and the MMOs left that were mostly surviving were the traditional model games (subscription model) and the Pay-2-Win ones.
It's not how things went. Post-WoW boom in the west was for subscriptions based MMO and many of them either died like WHO or forced to abandon subscription (TESO) or convert to f2p (LOTRO, SWTOR, AOC, DCUO).
Pure f2p MMO was a thing mostly of east and they were practically unaffected by pump&slump

A big part of the problem was the monetization model. You could just pay to get the exact character or skin or weapon skin, etc. This meant the money flow stopped once people got what they wanted and completed the game. It wasn't enough money for these companies to maintain and update these games.
Its not a problem - devs can always put new skins into games. Many games of old are active till today and even WoW earns quite a bit of money on its skin/mounts etc sales

The answer that these MMOs needed back then was made extremely clear after the fact, in the mid 2010s: Gambling.
A bit more of them would have survived if this had happened.
Most of them survived though, the biggest failures would be WHO, Tabula Rassa and Wildstar. All the rest managed to find it's niche

On Nintendo Switch 2, Welcome Tour is a good example... Many people swore they wouldn't pay for that demo... And then they went out like zombies to buy it and show it off. 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦.

In other hand...

Idiots... Including Warner Bros and other ignorant people... Who said that video games were a passing fad or only for kids.... Now it's the most important medium than film and music.

P.D. The day will finally come when Warner Bros. will file for bankruptcy... I'm going to celebrate with pizza and wine... A day that won't be long in coming.

That DS will bomb terribly against PSP because of its unorthodox design and low-resolution graphics. Currently, it's the second-best-selling console of all time.

That dual-layer DVD will not provide sufficient space for Xbox 360 games. The vast majority of Xbox 360 games ran perfectly fine from a single disc, although there were some notable exceptions, like the 4-disc Lost Odyssey.

That PlayStation 4 supports 4K Blu-rays. Some guy had a whole thread trying to prove that.

I think the whole "You think it looks good now, but in 10 years you'll think it looks like shit" argument was always dubious, but now it's less true than ever.
There was a period of rapid evolution in game visuals where 10 years took us from Goldeneye to Crysis and I could sort of agree with the sentiment.

But now? 10 years old games like The Witcher 3, MGSV, Arkham Knight, etc all still look great to me. Specially if you use modern hardware to run them at higher resolutions and smooth framerates.

Not really as much gamers but developers (including Valve) pushed for a bit:

The future of gaming is episodic content! We can definitely create a development pipeline where new content is delivered on a regular, sustainable basis. Trust us, buy all 5 episodes up front, they'll be delivered on time!

Circa today if im not mistaken.
Warriors gonna warrior. The reviews all speak for themselves.

Honestly, I really like this idea in theory. The Telltale Walking Dead games were fantastic. I think that it only makes sense in certain scenarios though. Like Point and Click adventure games are generally easier to make than some big AAA content I'd assume so I'd think these would be reasonable for deadlines.

I'd also think that something like Spiderman or whatever where you've already got the entire city out there, it should be easy to drop some episodic DLC into that when you've already got the full game out there and made. A few hours of content here and there like a few comic books worth of story at a time. I'm probably underestimating how easy this would be though.

This is half correct…

This is incorrect. Maybe you think that there were not that many MMOs in existence or maybe you're vastly underestimating the amount of "15 seconds of fame" flash in the pan MMOs that actually existed back then, most of them from NCSoft, Nexon, and Perfect World Entertainment amongst others.

The MMO graveyard is much, much, much larger than the games today that are currently on life support. It's worth a look if you haven't checked it out. I guarantee there will be tons of games you have never heard of.

I don't know about "gamers," but I can tell you one thing I used to say, and reality proved me wrong. I used to say I preferred buying physical, because it gave me the option to recoup some money by reselling the game. Now I know that is not true. I much prefer the convenience of buying games digitally, and I don't care about any money lost because I can't sell it used (half the time that was more hassle than it was worth, anyway).
AT the end of the day, Convenience ALWAYS wins
