It was actually insane. Came seemingly out of nowhere and was the biggest thing on the planet for like a year. Everywhere I went I saw groups of people of all ages messing around with it. Parks, malls, wherever else that had those hot spots were inundated with people that first summer.
Now something like GtA6 or Mario Kart will sells dozens of millions of copies but it still seems like nothing compared to Pokemon Go. Being a f2p phone game your install base is basically endless and Pokemon is the most popular IP on earth. If they released a full blown sequel that was way better I still don't think they could replicate that first year or so's success.
