Thinking on it, the Yu-Gi-Oh anime is on some straight up bullshit.

I mean lord have mercy!

I liked this show as a kid, I ain't gonna lie, but I tried to rewatch it (I watched the Six Episode[!!!] long Kaiba vs Yugi battle and omfg was it painful to get through.

The dialogue is awful to unprecedented levels, as while the characters do have personalities, at the same time, they don't feel like people. Just shouting retarded bullshit about the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP!!! Teà was goddamn INSUFERABLE with that shit. Wouldn't shut up and at the same time couldn't wait to hop on Yami Yugi's D. "Joey wouldn't give up! I have to believe in the heart of the cards!"

Speaking of which, FUCK that POS plot device that allows ass pull after after ass pull. Everytime it looks like Yugi is about to lose he meditates (i.e. Prays) that he pulls the right card for this EXACT situation at this EXACT moment, to allow him to win a duel. Then during duels they act all "shocked" at how their opponent is outplaying them "Oh no!" he's about to lose, but "HOLD ON! You've activated my trap card that allows me to pull some bullshit!"

And I also like how this is supposed to be holograms but they act hurt when their life points are attacked directly.

Goddammit, and now I hear the anime at one point people dueled while riding MOTORCYCLES?

omg

;__;

I refuse to watch this series again because I would probably look at it as being even stupider than I did years ago.

OP what are your thoughts on The Heart of the Cards

Edit: reading that op it looks like you don't believe in it, you ain't shit.

That kinda sounds awesome.

Yu-Gi-Oh pretty much started the whole "heart of the cards" + top deck hype.

I think at the end of the show, they revealed "the heart of the cards" was really just Yami Yugi having the power to magically stack the deck in his favor.

Joey's deck was the worst kind of bullshit, though. Nothing but dice rolls and card flips and other random luck based crap.

Long ago I got some bootleg-ass Yugioh dvd and watched it. Fucking crazy, Bandit Keith pulling a gun on Pegasus (called "Pecassi") Mokuba was subtitled as "WoodenHorse" and Yugi's grandfather got crucified...wild shit.

The Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh is better. Better music, dialog and voice acting. I'm not saying it's a drastic difference because the basic plot is still ridiculous. But I enjoyed the show a lot as a kid so I see where you're coming from.

I love the first Japanese intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pif7JHak2CI

I still say the heart of the cards thing while playing other card games.

I rarely play card games anymore, but I still do this too hahaha

I never got this

They poke fun at it in one episode... but they keep going with it anyway

OP you need to re-watch future episodes. I want to know if the Shadow realm holds up~

Fansubs in the 90s and early 2000s were some weird fun.

Joey is the luckiest bastard in the universe. I still don't understand how he manage to beat two people the way he did during Battle City.

I wish the manga hadn't become all about the card game. The first few chapters of the manga especially were pretty fucked up, Yami was literally a Saw villain

Not following the actual rules of the card game was the biggest problem. I could never play by the real rules after watching the show first because you can't do anywhere near as many instant play cards from your hand as you can in the show. It totally breaks the sweet combos the cards pretend to have.

The ridiculous ass-pulls were what made it amazing! Duelist Kingdom was kinda lame because the rules were so bonkers, but once they hit Battle City I really enjoyed seeing the crazy plays.

It's like any sports movie: stuff that would never work in real life works because it's a movie.

It's also interesting that "the heart of the cards" got progressively more broken as the new series arrived. In Zexal the main protagonists can literally will new cards into existance as he draws.

yeah the OG game was crazy hard to get cool monsters out. Syncho Summoning and XYZ fixes that.

The Yugi vs Kaiba scene where he says "The winds of change are blowing Yugi!" forever made that show great for me.

I used to wake up way early to catch it. Last thing I recall was them battling on this giant airship. Was pretty awesome, loved all the twists. I never even played the card game one time.

As stupid as Yu-Gi-Oh was, the fact that taking life point damage had any sort of physical effect on them was ridiculous, and I never understood why they did that.

Don't do yourself this injustice. 5D's is better in so many ways from the duels to the story. Wow how dark and mature the story is. Try it before you dismiss because the original doesn't hold up anymore. And please watch it in Japanese because it's been edited and watered down in English.

To this day I swear Yugi was constantly playing trap cards that the viewer never even sees him put into play. It just happens and you can never remember him playing them. Show is still so bad it's good status to me, though.

Oh yeah, did anyone else get ripped off by dungeon dice monsters too? That game looked so fucking amazing on the show but then they put out basically 1 set that recreated that one match (with broken rules of course) and that was it. What a fucking waste.

I vaguely remember an episode where Kaiba and Yugi were fighting and after Yugi claws back from certain defeat Kaiba steps up on a ledge and says that the resulting shockwave from his creature being destroyed will send him plummeting to his death.

I really hope I just dreamt that up.

I remember when egyptian god cards were the hot shit tho, dudes were going to war over those 3

Ra was probably the most broken god of all he had like 4 special effects

Do you mind sharing some details about the early chapters? The anime seemrd pretty fucked up at times with the forceful removal of Pegasus' eye and the duel where the loser lost their legs. Not to mention banishing people to some unknown realm. All for a card game.

I remember being so excited for future episodes when Yugi won his egyptian god card. I'm still disappointed he only played it once from what I can remember.

Want to know which anime a bit worse than this?
Beyblade
I remember as a kid I was able to accept the bullshit in yugioh but Beyblade was just beyond stupid even for me. I think at one point a villain threatened he would send out his spinning tops to wreck a city.

I'm pretty sure that happened
and Yugi went through with the attack because screw Kaiba

Funny thing is when they finally printed tournament-legal god cards, Ra is by far the worst. Obelisk is pretty good, Slifer is decent, but Ra just... sucks.

Weren't all the 'shadow realm' references in the dub censored from death in the original?
