This ghosting on PSP issue.

I'm just wondering, is the ghosting on the PSP screen at all similar to the ghosting / blurring effect on the crappy old Gameboy green screen, with the potential for future hardware revisions to alleviate the problem; or is this just the nature of the beast?

I only ask because my Iron Resolve wears thin and I fear a PSP purchase is inevitable in coming months. :(

Its pretty bad.
I'm playing Popolocrois on it, and when there's a large black part on the screen (like an exit) its just god-awful.

Its not as bad as drinky says it is.

I didn't heed his warning with the shitty shit known as the GBA Player and cried myself to sleep for a full week after purchasing it.

I don't want to cry like the spurned love object in a 1950's rock song anymore.

I find the ghosting pretty bad when I play the Rally-X minigame on Ridge Racer

Good thing I don't play CCRAPPY GAMES! W4FFL3S!!

Sure, future hardware revisions could alleviate the ghosting, assuming Sony wants to spring for a more expensive display.

As for how noticeable it is, depends on the game. More noticeable when there are brighter colors shifting against a dark background. Noticeable in Untold Legends for example, but not so much in Wipeout Pure.

It's pretty bad but it mainly only effects blacks. Like in Tony Hawk if there's banner on the wall with black lettering it'll ghost and look annoying. Popolocrois looks like hell and I couldn't even stick with the game.

Basically I think developers are gonna have to start making games with the ghosting issue of the PSP in mind. Staying away from solid blacks and stuff.

Noticeable in Untold Legends for example...

POOP!

That's one of the games I'm all hot for.

Oh well, I could just pretend it's a cool special effect like weapon trails in Soul Calibur or something.

I'm mainly interested in picking up near launch hardware for the good times to be had once the hackers get crackin'.

Aw fuck, now who am I going to whine to when I get stuck.

I've got every launch title minus the sports ones, and it only really bothers me in Untold Legends. Primarily the color red. It's present in other games (Tony Hawk is another one where it's clearly evident), but the fact that not every game is consistently blurred leads me to believe that a hardware revision may not be necessary to correct the problem.

It's not so horrible. . .it's just the game where it's most evident. It's not like it's a blurry, Game Gear-esque mess.

Well then, it is decided.

Once I consolidate a considerable portion of my debt; I will take the plunge.

Now to see if the sperm / blood banks will take multiple donations in one visit. . .

No need to get all racist now...

But yeah, I notice it only in games where there is a solid color, like the RallyX game in Ridge Racers. It's just terrible in that instance. But when you're in a 3D game, it's not so bad.

:lol That didn't take much at all.

It's not ghosting, it's... motion blur. This thing can do anything.

Actually I had not heard PSP had this. It disgusted me on Game Gear. I can't believe they'd make you pay that much for a big pretty screen with this problem. I mean a little ghosting is okay on laptops, you know with stationary windows and all. But in games? I can't stand it.

Interest -10

Same here. Games have it but you're concentrating on a specific task and you don't see it. A scene like the final dance scene in Napoleon Dynamite (white kid dancing in front of a black background) is a good way to see just how annoying the red blur can get.

So this is a pretty big issue afterall? I asked about this a long time ago but everybody said it was hardly any. :/

BTW, why can`t they use normal screens, with the same technology used in tv`s? CRT or what it`s called. I guess because it`s more expensive, uses more power?

Yes, Popolocrois was a fucking atrocity because of the ghosting. I couldn't play for longer than 10 minutes because it was doing my head in. I'm gonna sell my copy if anyone wants it - if not I'll just flog it to the 2nd hand shop sharks in Tokyo. Probably get 2000 for it, max.

:lol Your PSP would be about 6 inches thick if they did that.

Heh, but what about those flatscreen tv`s? They are different technology? They`re LCD too?
Everything flatscreen is LCD, pretty much. They call it plasma when it gets bigger than a certain size (is it 29"?) but it's still pretty much the same tech. CRT is cathode ray tube - electrons are fired at the screen from left to right, top to bottom, to light the phosphor particles red, green or blue. Magnets control where the electrons hit and the depth of the tube is usually a little bit less than the width of the screen.

I was wondering the same thing about the mini game. I haven't noticed it anywhere else. I only have Lumines and RR though. I think it is intentional since the bleeding is only the magenta and would be pretty bad even for a low end screen.

It's not bad at all when you consider that the other two alternatives would be screen with higher response time, which would drain the battery faster, and the other would be using the screen that you can find in most PDAs which simply fades the stuff on the screen when there's fast motion going on.

I keep saying that despite the ghosting, which is it's only issue that occurs only sometimes, the PSP screen is just better than any screen used on any other handheld device I've seen.

It seems to work like those Samsung 8ms LCDs. Areas of high contrast only updated at 12ms while less extreme variations were at 8ms. Perhaps the response time is simply slower when dealing with high contrast areas?

ghosting is there but it isn't really THAT bad. However in dark areas it is a little bit annoying. BUt overall it is not worse than your typical TFT monitor.

The issue is not with the ghosting that comes with the hardware but how some games simply don't take that into account. Developers MUST begin to be aware or we'll end up with more stuff that looks like Rally-X on Ridge Racers or Popocrocrios. :(

response time has quickly become a marketing tick-box, with 'flexible' measuring to boot.

So often you'll find 12 or 16ms responses actually being mid-grey -> mid-grey, not white to black. Averaging out for 'real world' environments which happens to boost their numbers.

So high contrast areas will take longer to update, its just a fact of life for LCD.

I have no problem with my PSP apart from mp4s, but then they are pretty poorly encoded anyway, especially PAL ones. I reserve judgement on UMD movies until my spiderman 2 comes over from Play Asia.

I don't mind the ghosting on Rally-X TOO much. It still manages to perfectly convey the smooth motion. The ghosting present looks very different from what I'm used to seeing on cheaper TFTs and I prefer it.

what is Ghosting?

sorry for being stupid but i do not know what it is so please tell me

Consider a white square moving around a black screen. If there were ghosting present, you'd be able to see traces or trails from the white square as it moves. The faster it moves, the larger the trails.

Here's a rather poor attempt at an example...

Let's say this is a square: []

The square is all the way at the right (looking below). The lines to the left represent a trail it has left behind.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [[]

direction------------>

Here's another example...

Look at the player moving across the screen. Notice the trails behind him? That's ghosting.

Here's a pic from Far Cry, zoomed in with a digital camera.

Notice the colors bleeding out onto the scene?

Another example, from a movie...
