Well, in their defense, the guy seemed like a psycho, and was three times as big as any of them. What if he had a gun, and tried to use it once they ganged up on him?

One reason why those people didn't act is the same reason why people failed to act duried the Kitty Genovese incident. The more people you have witnessing an event, the more unlikely people will act because they feel that the responsibility is diffused. Had there only been one or two people witnesses there, they would have been more likely to act. They're not necessarily monsters or jerks. We're all susceptible to this phenomenon.

but seriously though, despite all the laws and penalties in this country, that is why you just mind your own business and don't get impatient if someone cuts in line or cuts you off on the freeway or whatever. because laws can't save you from receiving a first class ass whupping. and do you think the dude on the cell phone would have rather got the shit kicked out of him, or rather had to wait an extra 5-10 mins? not defending the guy who beat him, but dont act like a smart ass and call your gf or whoever and talk shit. keep your mouth shut cause there are some crazy motherfuckers out there who really dont care if they go to jail

As for no one helping him, size doesn't really matter. I've been in way too many "big tough bastard" fights when they've been drunk (I work in a bar) that usually 3 people can bring down a big guy. The last guy we had was HUGE and full of speed. Received a few punches but it only took 2 of us to get him down.. of course the whole place was full of toff's wanting not to get physically hurt.

But I don't like the chances of someone taking a poll, then saying "Well, it's agreed then, we'll all intervene as a group. Okay? Good. Now, on the count of three..."
I'm somewhat of a physical coward, so I doubt I'd go in alone. What to do? Grab a friend/nearest bystander by the collar, and drag him with you into the fracas? Why do they have posters for what to do if someone's choking but not this?
