Thor: Ragnarok Early Reactions

The "music" and "70s/80s" angles is making this feel a lot like Marvels stretching out the Guardians of the Galaxy formula - or is that just the aesthetic they've assigned to "off-Earth/in space" movies?

If you mean stretching out the more memorable marvel to space then yes

In Waititi we trust but goddamn they should ban people from using "fun" in their reviews for comic book movies. I don't even know what fun means.

I just don't want the Guardians movies to lose their personality by being a winning formula that Marvel bleeds dry.

I'm glad they're doubling down on "fun," though. Comic book and superheros movies need to have a good chunk of wonder and levity or they collapse under the weight of middle-aged men in silly costumes self-seriously brooding.

I mean, I trust the guy directing it but we always see those same comments about every comicbook film.

What does look like an 80s game mean?

I'm going to keep my expectation as low as possible to avoid any disappointment. *Shove hype back down*

Go play Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and get back to me. You'll see what I mean.

Whenever someone says "it feels like an 80's videogame" I feel like what they are really trying to say is that it feels like a videogame set in the 80's or inspired by. Like, an 80's videogame barely had any colors and graphics, it makes no sense to compare.

When I think about retro synths, I always think of Strangers Things instead of, you know, Vangelis or Carpenter, because music was born on the 2000's I guess.

To be fair, theres a difference between a formula and an aesthetic. If you to talk about the actual formula of GOTG - the way character drama is presented, the mix of tense battles with wtf moments - then that's a whole different discussion. If you ask me, aving similar visual styles isnt that troubling.

Considering how Dr Strange turned out and what I thought of it, I'm not sure critical acclaim for a MCU film means anything to me anymore. Tasty kool aid though,

I'm optimistic about Thor Ragnarok, but I don't really care what critics or fans have to say about it until I see it myself.

I'm moreso asking for them to explain why it's fun rather than shouting "it's fun!". So many MCU movies are described like this in reactions.

That's what the rest of the review is for. These are short tweets. "Fun" is an effective word to get the point across.

Also you should really consider putting me on your ignore list.

What.

Dr Strange wasn't an enjoyable experience for you?

Yeah unless you know of games or other media inspired by 80's aesthetic and music. Then it's so easy to misinterpret something like that. I for one, adore the synthetic pop music and bright colors of the 80's.

I mean, not everyone is going to like every movie that ends up having an overall great reaction from critics/audiences. There are plenty of well-reviewed movies I didn't enjoy.

(Doctor Strange is pretty awesome though. Not without its flaws, of course.)

What.

Sorry man, just saying. I hope we're cool, but my posts seem to often piss you off. Really not trying to do that.

Excuse me? Your post seems to imply that Thor TDW had a negative reception. Its one of the best superhero movies

Eh I probably should have went with reputation.

You're buying into that Gaf TDW hate.

It's in the lower end when it comes to Marvel movies but it's not the horrible movie movie threads on Gaf would lead you to believe.

Eh I kind of always thought that way before I become a member of Gaf. Not horrible no, but it was the weakest MCU film.

Regardless I’ve been optimistic since creative control isn’t being hindered by the execs at Marvel Entertainment.

Doctor Strange was aggressively boring for sure which was a shame considering the cool stuff they had to work with from that character

Waititi made two really fun and irreverent comedy movies prior to this though so I got some faith in Thor 3 being one of the better mcu movies out there

I do to! If this film comes close to capture that feel of the 80's then I'll feel more than satisfied.

No, it was a tepid bore with by the numbers direction of an uninspiring screenplay that was a complete waste of the character and of my time. One of the worst MCU films next to Thor 2 and the Incredible Hulk. It had absolutely nothing to say.

I'm just saying, people on Twitter going "WOW THIS NEW MCU MOVIE IS FUN" means so little to me now. It literally tells me nothing. They say the same things about every MCU regardless of the range in quality. I thought Homecoming was really good and was surprised, but there's no way you can tell much different between that and Dr Strange judging from general critical reception.

Professor Thorgi described it as Marvel using the 70's/80's aesthetic to brand their cosmic films, & I honestly agree with him on that.

Did anyone find Dr Strange enjoyable? Thing was a forgettable slog with a couple of redeeming sequences.

Early impressions of comic book movies don't have the best track record, but it's Taika so I'm fairly confident Thor 3 will deliver.

i expected the early impressions to be positive (as they often are) but what's surprising is the praise for the score/soundtrack. that's not usually the case with marvel films.

Going by the tweets I'm expecting a comedy with good action with a whatever plot. I'm alright with that so long as it's fun; it's what I was expecting anyway!

this reminds me that I still haven't seen GAF's fave movie, The Dark World.

as far as these reviews are concerned, cautiously optimistic

I still have not sat down and watched Dr. Strange. Visually seemed rad though.

Will probably get to it and GOTG2 in the week before Infinity War. Waititi and Coogler will get day one theater watches from me though.

#ThorRagnarok is a ton of fun! Self-contained MCU plot, but character work is awesome, and the adventure a thrill. Best of the Thor movies!

Funny to think that there's a 'but'; If anything it being stand alone may have sold me.
