So I unearthed Neverwinter Nights, played it for about an hour, stopped, pulled the disc out and went for a shower. Come back, my CD-ROM drive is open.

Shut it. Sounds like it's trying to read a disc, get the funky "disc cursor" (there's no disc in the tray). Opens.

WTF.

Restart Windows. Open the drive. Close it. Drive opens. Close it. It stays closed. Open it. Close it. Stays closed. Put in a disc. Take it out, close the drive. Opens.

WTF.

I have no idea what's wrong. I strongly doubt it's spyware or a virus (I haven't done anything out of the ordinary in my everyday PC routine).

I think it may be something that happened when I installed DVD authoring software (neoDVD), which I thought wanted to open my drive.... either that, or it's something that happened around the same time.

Could it be my drive cratering? The drive still works fine in terms of reading software. It's about 2 years old, Creative Labs.

Wow... that dropped off the front page in a hurry. Ran adaware. No results. It's a very repeatable problem... it's not happening "at random."

Next test is to try safe mode....

You need to see if it happens when no OS is running.

For instance, go into the BIOS setup when you turn on the PC, and then see how the drive behaves. If it's fine here, then it seems like it must be a software issue, not a hardware issue. However, if it misbehaves here, then it must be hardware.

Durr... of course!

Thanks for that. I was able to replicate the problem in safe mode, then I saw this post (after I'd bought a new drive already) and thought to myself "hmm... maybe I should try that just to be sure). Was almost exactly as willing to do it while in the BIOS as it seemed to be in Windows. Ah well, I should have expected it -- the drive had a really good run (Late 2000 to Jan. 2004).... maybe it should have been the first thing to cross my mind.

New drive, quieter... and now the front of my PC shows a united all-LG look ;)
