This is going to be close! Can someone please go and win this, instead of everyone but one losing it. :/

With regards to Phil, I think he has gotten better. I think the FIGJAM ( thing started like 10 years ago and has lived on. Seems that he has gotten more humble.

Before anyone asks, FIGJAM = Fuck I'm good just ask me

with that said, go Phil!

I don't watch golf but am interested in why Phil has so many fans pulling for him. I recall reading that he's supposedly full of himself (players call him FIGJAM, etc.). Is that not true, or do fans like him despite that?

He made a comment about Tiger's equipment once. I think he gets a lot of hate for that.

The reason fans like Phil is Phil is very good to the fans. While Tiger tends to be a bit cold and aloof on the course sometimes, Phil even when he is playing bad acknowledges the people that cheer for him.

He also has that "Norman Factor". He is so good, but shoots himself in the foot so often that its hard not to cheer for him

When is Tiger ever aloof? I noticed people say this about Obama and I don't get why.

Weird I always thought the fans liked Phil because he is a big fat white guy, you know like 90% of the gallery.

That might have a bit to do it. I grew up as a Davis Love fan (too bad he is at the end of his career) so I like watching Tiger and Phil win but I wouldnt consider myself enamored with either player. Both players seem like really good guys.

Edit: Also even the biggest Tiger supporter has got to see when he is on the golf course he is extremely focused. There is nothing wrong with that, but the term "cold fish" has been used a lot by writers and other players to describe Tiger.

Phil is also liked because of the underdog factor. He's seen as the guy behind Tiger. And for awhile he couldn't get over the hurdle of winning a major. People are always attractive to the underdog. And even though he's won majors, that 2006 US Open disaster probably made him even more likable to those people that liked him for being an underdog.

What channel is the US Open on now?

NBC.

And Verizon FIOS (and Comcast I think) ppl, you can watch it live in ESPN360.com remotely. I have it running right now.

Did ESPN really just switch programming over to sportscenter instead of watching the closing of a close u.s. open? WTF ESPN!

Okay I thought that's what happen. At first I thought they were going over highlights. Then I was like "WTF what channel is it really on?" Because ESPN surely can't be that stupid.

Some random things:

- Tiger Woods is the leader in the clubhouse. He won't win. But it's amazing how, even when he is 80th after one round and 50th after the second round, he is able to finish in the top 10 tournament after tournament, when almost everyone else is falling apart.

- LOL at Barnes. Poor guy.

- Good to see Duval back.

- The New York crowd is annoying. It's just too much for me. The player didn't even hit the ball and they are already shouting stupid lines. It's fine during the Ryder Cup, but not in a regular open.

I agree. I gave up on Tiger after day 2 and for him to be in the top ten now is shocking. Had he went to -2, I would say he'd still have a chance on the other guys screwing up and going to a playoff.

Wow its been 10 years since Payne Stewart won his last US Open (about 3 months before he died). It doesnt seem that long ago.

Supposedly Phil is one of the least liked guys in the locker room on the tour. The stories are that he is a complete ass behind closed doors and with the other players, but turns it on for the camera and crowds. There is also very little love lost between him and Tiger as well. Because of the nature of the game, both are very careful about what they say about one another though.

I'm not ready to say that he is "back". Lets see how he plays the rest of the season. Could easily be a one off.

8. Phil Mickelson

Last August at the PGA Championship at Baltusrol, in New Jersey, a reporter turned to a golfer on the tour and said of Phil Mickelson, “Man, the fans here love Phil.” The golfer replied, “They don’t know him the way we do.” It blew our minds a little when we heard this, since Mickelson ranks among the most admired golfers in America. But today the same reporter makes his case bluntly: “Phil Mickelson literally has no friends out there. He annoys everybody.”

Mickelson has earned many nicknames on the Tour, but our favorite is FIGJAM (Fuck, I’m good—just ask me). “There are a bunch of pros who think he and his whole smiley, happy face are a fraud,” another reporter says. “They think he’s preening and insincere.” Mickelson has aggressively pursued a family-man image that is crucial to his success as an endorser. In 1999, when he nearly won the U.S. Open, Mickelson wore a beeper onto the fairway to alert him when his wife went into labor. If the beeper went off during the final round, he announced, he would simply walk off the course. Some of Mickelson’s peers, smelling a PR stunt, badly wanted to call his bluff. “Everybody’s saying, ‘Oh God, I want that beeper to go off,’ ” recalls one writer. (It didn’t.)

In 2003, Mickelson violated multiple taboos when he told a reporter that Tiger Woods was playing with “inferior equipment” and that he envied Mickelson’s longer drives from the tee. Woods was infuriated. “You just don’t say shit like that in golf,” says a reporter. (To be fair, another reporter says, “Phil was right.”)

I just remembered this was still on! I want to root for Duval but I am afraid that if I do I will jinx him.

This is gonna be close, but 1st place looks out of Mickelson's reach going onto the 18th at 2 behind Glover.
