American goverment : That's our job!"Congress is acting to prevent foreign adversaries from conducting espionage, surveillance, maligned operations, harming vulnerable Americans, our servicemen and women, and our U.S. government personnel.”
It should be govt regulated by age. We do this for smoking. For alcohol. Movies. and even video games. Tiktok and other social media apps should be regulated the same way.TikTok sucks and is an active detriment to society, and frankly I wish it didn't exist.
With that said, no government should ever be dictating what media we choose or don't choose to consume. Very bad precedent and I'm against this.
I don't think this is about the media we consume as much as it is how people use it. The government doesn't care that people are giving themselves retarded tiktok brains by watching Fortnite dances and shaking their asses for money for hours on end.TikTok sucks and is an active detriment to society, and frankly I wish it didn't exist.

i was one of those parents but my kids watched youtube and netflix trash. last year i got sick of it and took away their ipad and hid it. but now i cant find it for my own use lol.I know someone who’s 6 year old kid does nothing but scroll TikTok on an iPad all fuckin day. Horrible parent.
I do think age restrictions are reasonable. Disallowing the app outright is not.It should be govt regulated by age. We do this for smoking. For alcohol. Movies. and even video games. Tiktok and other social media apps should be regulated the same way.
We have seen stark rises in child and teenage depression and mental health issues in the last decade or so. This is all tied to social media. When you and I were growing up there were wars everywhere, terrorists attacks traumatized an entire generation of people who watched the murder of 3000 people live on their tvs. And yet these kids are far more traumatized.
I have tried my friends to stop spending all day on tiktok and facebook to no avail. You cant convince adults to give up drugs. But kids? its our responsibility to take things from them lol.
P.S My 9 year old is going through this right now. I have shielded him the best i can but his friends consume this trash and most of them are shown shit by their moms. Like actual war stuff which is then unloaded on to my son by his traumatized friends and im like wtf kind of mother shows her kids this shit. Parents cannot be expected to use common sense.

The government is worried that it's a conduit to funnel sensitive straight to the Chinese government because people share everything on social media without a second though. If tiktok is owned by an American company then the government can at least pull someone into congressional hearings and toss someone in jail if China gets the secrets. They can also get secret warrants that allow them to monitor the traffic on these services. As is there's little they can do to monitor and enforce espionage laws regarding tiktok because the moving parts are in places they can't go.

people dont realize just how much trash is on youtube kids. netflix is slightly better but even that is just dumb mind numbing content. not the disney or saturday morning cartoons we grew up with.
It's the lack of education and strict guidelines.
Anything that focuses on youth should be heavily regulated, and schools should start giving education in modern day problems such as social media etc etc.
Instead they allow the kids to just free roam get fully hooked without warning and they become drug addicts as results.
I was made to go outside and find something to do as a kid lol. Now it seems most people just shove tablets at their kids and let the tablets parent.
Schools? Sure, but that should be second or maybe even third on the list. It is the job of parents to teach and regulate this stuff. It's the lack of education and strict guidelines.

We banned TikTok in our house several years ago and I’m super happy we did it. TikTok is a cancer. Typically I wouldn’t support actions like this but this one doesn’t bother me one bit. I understand it’s is probably hypocritical
If the goal here is really about foreign spying and data privacy, then it's pointless in light of the complete lack of regulation we have on data harvesting and selling. China can simply buy all the data they need, they don't need TikTok.
I suspect the issue here is more to do with the bills it's packaged with and the threat that alternative information spheres play in shaping American opinion on foreign policy affairs.
Context matters. If League of Legends had the scope and reach of tiktok it would probably be under the government's microscope, too. It's not just about it being a Chinese company. It's about it being a platform from a Chinese company that's partially owned owned by the Chinese government that's purposely designed to funnel the private information and communications of millions of people, 170 million of which are Americans, through Chinese servers. Tiktok itself being banned in China while being owned by China is a huge and suspicious red flag. But then where do we draw the line? Are we banning League of Legends next? It's owned by Tencent, a 100% Chinese company.
But everything is funneled through American Servers and this is subject to warrants. The US government wants it to be owned by a US company so that everything can be funneled through American-based servers so that they can get the FISA court to issue warrants to allow it to do the very thing they're afraid that China is doing, with the added benefit of being able to hang someone out on charges if they find sensitive information.
This is true, but my personal philosophy with my kids was always not to just take away the bad things from them, but also to teach them why those things are bad and need to be taken away. When they were really little, they didn't quite understand why they weren't allowed to watch certain TV shows that their friends could, or why they didn't get screen time an hour before bed - but in time they grew to understand. If your kids are determined to get access to TikTok or any other social media, they will get it. You can think you're the authority figure all you want, but just like we all managed to sneak shit around our parents, so can your kids.
Nothing. Their watch is over.what is libs of tik tok going to do now
Conspiracy theories aside
I was made to go outside and find something to do as a kid lol. Now it seems most people just shove tablets at their kids and let the tablets parent.
Damn, I didn't know they were Chinese. And state sponsored as well.Things are not looking good for my DJI drones
Perfect analogy to the 19th century wars!I hear the TikTok algorithm is different in China. The one for America is the “opium” version.
Wat raar dat iets dergelijks vanaf FB etc al niet in het onderwijs verwoven is.
Zo "raar"
Ik zie de gevolgen al bij een vriendiens dochter op het moment. SMH.
Anyone notice the TikTok ban was embedded in the same bill that provides weapons to Azov Nazis, the genocidal IOF, & KMT nationalists? It was called The 21st Century Peace Through Strength Act.

Law the passed is overly broad and can target other social media companies & websites. I suspect this'll get used elsewhere in a few years.
The state I live in just put up a state wide age block on all porn sites recently. You have to enter a government ID and social security # that gets stored by a third party company outside of the US. Really feeling the freedom.Law the passed is overly broad and can target other social media companies & websites. I suspect this'll get used elsewhere in a few years.

These new laws have been enacted in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Kansas, Utah and Virginia this year. I don't know if they've been challenged yet in court, but I assume that's coming. More states are discussing jumping on board, like Missouri. I'm in Kansas.thats insane. what state is it?
Im all for banning corn for kids but adults shouldnt have to give their social security number. a simple call to the provider should do. or have the ISP simply provide a portal for the account holder to enable corn. and then i can use my router to set parental controls for my kids. These new laws have been enacted in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Kansas, Utah and Virginia this year. If they can ban porn and TikTok, literally nothing is safe at that point. Basically living in a VPN required country.
That would be a much more logical approach. Just have it be a mandated setting when setting up internet that you have to enable or disable. They want it to be as inconvenient and overreaching as possible. The more they get away with, the more they set precedent for just going further.Im all for banning corn for kids but adults shouldnt have to give their social security number. a simple call to the provider should do. or have the ISP simply provide a portal for the account holder to enable corn. and then i can use my router to set parental controls for my kids.
Im not fucking giving up my social security number for this shit. are they fucking insane.
I'd generally would say that banning TikTok is government overreach but I'd argue that in this instance it's reciprocity, its insane that China bans...

So they don't allow our companies to operate there then why should we allow their social media companies to operate here.
