Time for GAF to unite - in the form of Santa

Last year, Penny-Arcade raised over $250,000 in cash and gifts from the gaming community to donate to the Seattle Children's Hospital. It was a huge success, but many people didn't want to participate because they didn't live in Seattle. This year they added 4 more hospitals.

IMO, it's one of the best charities out there. These kids are stuck in a hospital all day with nothing to do. Give them the gift of gaming to help them escape reality for an hour or two. The cost of giving is minimal and can be deducted from your taxes.

About Child's Play
Here's the deal.

Last year we set up a charity called Child’s Play. We set it up because we were angry the media decided to blame all the world’s problems on games and gamers. Basically they said that gamers were bad people, and we thought that wasn’t right. Apparently, you guys agreed: through Child’s Play you sent more than $250,000 in toys, games, and cash to the sick kids at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

That was awesome. You guys have proven over and over again that you are an overwhelming force, and you really came through and made a real difference to the 190,000 kids that Seattle Children’s Hospital cares for each year. So we’re doing it again this year, only this time we’ve expanded Child’s Play to five hospitals across the U.S. so you can send toys to a hospital a little closer to home.

Child’s Play works the same as last year. With the help of hospital staff we’ve set up Amazon Wish Lists full of video games, toys, and movies. You can go to each hospital’s list and buy a toy, and that toy will be sent to the hospital. Some of these kids are in pretty bad shape—imagine being stuck alone in a hospital over the holidays--so getting something from a fellow gamer would really raise their spirits. Some of the stuff the hospital will give away for kids to keep, while other gifts (like consoles) will be kept by the hospital for patients to use throughout the year.

Penny Arcade has a readership of something like three and a half million gamers across the world. We are arguably the largest community of gamers on the internet. The important word there being community. This isn’t IGN, this isn’t Gamespy, we are not a faceless corporation and you are not just a number tracked by a database and then relayed to hungry advertisers. You guys have proven yourselves to be a powerful force when stirred into action. Here is your opportunity to use that power to do some real good.

Thanks for the link. I just bought the hospital in Virginia a copy of F-Zero GX and a book of Japanese fairy tales. :D

BTW, just go to the page, click where you wanna donate, and there are Amazon wish lists full of cool stuff you can get for them. Want to ensure that a kids' hospital is Xbox-biased? Now's your chance! :lol

For those in the UK, might I suggest the Pass the Parcel scheme? Just take unwrapped gifts for 0-16 year olds to your local Superdrug, and they're passed on to families in need.

A couple of close friends of mine who lost their son to heart disease a couple of years back pointed this one out to me: he benefitted from a present from this scheme and it was a real help to them.

Wow, I hadn't heard of this before. It really is an admirable iniative and I respect the PA guys so much more for it. Poor kids. :(

Really wish I had some money to donate right about now. :(

You don't have to buy the stuff on the Amazon wishlist. In fact, I'm sending a couple unopened games I have. There is also a paypal account set-up so you an just donate money.

ah, I'm doing my share with my lady's group, just like last year. Kids who spend most, if not all, of their time in hospitals would definitely appreciate any little thing you can come up with. I had classes in college with a man who spent his childhood in a hospital because he had a muscular disease, and he told me how he felt growing up as a kid.

OK, enough preaching from me, but the karma gods are smiling if you've decided to help these kids.

I was too poor last year to donate, but not only am I a little better off, but I live near Seattle, to boot. I'll get a handful of games for the hospital. I'm glad you posted this, more people should participate. It's really special what Gabe and Tycho are doing.

This is a really awesome idea. Come on, GAFFERS. Show everyone you're more than just a bunch of cynical old bastards.

Actually, that may be asking too much.

Seriously, just donate five bucks, you spend that much on a mocha frappuccino and a Cinnabon while you're waiting for EB to open so you can spend $200 on Nintendo DS shit.

Game + GAF Poster = Whiny threads
Game + Sick Kid = Happy sick kid
