I will just enjoy what the tv show gives me and make peace with it. It's really unlikely Mr. Martin will finish these massive books considering the mess made in Dance. Maybe if he starts Winds of Winter with an apocalyptic winter that kills off a lot of the cast he'll be able to wrap it up better? He'll also need a very good editor(s). I'll definitely come back and give book 6 a try if it ever gets released because the Ironborn in the show are so boring.

This is exactly why I want to see Sanderson finish the series. "And then King Jon Snow made premarital sex illegal and shut down every brothel in Westeros."
And argument that i've heard (although I don't believe it) is that book 3 will never be good enough in Rothfuss's eyes. He's admitted that he is addicted to editing and he recently said that the current draft of Doors of Stone was only a "1.5/5 stars" so I could see the book never coming out because it'll never get to a point where Rothfuss thinks it is worth releasing.
That said I thought there were certain parts of Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear that could have used more time in the oven, so I'm fine with waiting until 2030 for Doors of Stone (I'm also 24, so I'm pretty sure I'll be alive by the time it comes out).

At this stage I don't really care that much, I've accepted that even if we get Winds we're not getting Dreams. I'm getting closure to the story via the TV show and that's fine for me.
Wise Man's Fear was one of the worst books I have ever read; definitely needed someone to trim about 1/4 of that book..

I don't get this line of thinking. He's not dying anytime soon nor is he 'too old' to write. People here are still holding out hope that George Miller will make another Mad Max film and he's 72, why would GRRM being 68 suddenly put him on deathwatch?
Since ADwD was released, I made the decision to go back to uni, got a BA and an MA. About to start a PhD. Fully expect to have completed it before Winds of Winter releases.
Also thanks to this thread for reminding me that I need to read Wise Mans Fear. I read the first four years ago and was holding out until that series was finished, but yeah I guess that's not happening anytime soon either.

I loved Wise Man's Fear but it took me like 3 months to read it because of how boring the entire Vintas section was (and the part about looking for the bandits in the woods GOOD LORD that was boring).

So what? Plenty of people have never learned to write with more than two fingers. With enough practice, you can still write quickly enough that way for almost all purposes. After all, in most cases - writing books included! - the limiting factor is not how quick you type, but how quick you think. What makes him a slow writer is not his writing speed, but that figuring out the right content takes a while. Being able to write 1000 characters per second won't help you when you need 30 minutes to come up with a great line of dialogue, and hours upon hours until you're finally satisfied with it (only to throw everything away once you realize that, nah, this just doesn't fit after all).

At this point I may only read new ones if he finishes it first. I loved the first 5 but I am kinda over it at this point. I dont want to read one more if it does release and then have him not finish them.

Yeah, if it takes you 5 seconds to write that one line, and then five minutes of review. Or if you spend 2 minutes writing the one line and five minutes of review, you're still 1:55 minutes behind with every line of writing.

how many of them are obese? George Miller looks quite fit, so does McCarthy and the others. obesity takes up to 10 years away from your life expectancy and that is around 78 years for men in the us.
he's 68 so just by statistics he's getting in the dangerous territory. i hope he makes it to 130 but he hasn't wrapped up WoW yet and he'll need another 4-5 years at best for ADoS, he'll be mid 70s. I personally don't think he'll ever finish those books and i'm fine with it. Live your life GRRM, you owe me nothing.

exactly, for him it's about planning, inspiration and motivation. once he'll know what to do, he'll finish it up quickly won't matter much if it takes him 6 months to type it up or 8.

She is apparently working on the final Exiles book next as the final Glass Thorns book is more or less done and in the final stages of edits awaiting publication.

Imagine when (if?) Winds is completed/released and Martin goes on an admittedly well deserved book tour. But then the tour lasts too long, and he comes home and is behind on the 5-6 projects he's working on. Meanwhile he's accepting other projects, other speaking engagements, etc. All of a sudden nearly two years have passed since Winds' release and he has barely written anything. Meanwhile the show has ended, and his story has effectively been spoiled. Thrones Mania is declining but he's trying to revive it by being involved in the spin off production. Another year passes. And the more Martin measures his progress as well as the plot, the more he realizes an 8th book would make things easier.

Nah, that's not the way GRRM operates. He'll write and write, and then realize three years later that the story isn't anywhere near where he needs it to be, and start from scratch again. Honestly, I'm not worried about how long it takes GRRM to release anything (or if the series ever gets finished); I'm more concerned about whether they'll be any good. And on that score, his writing methods give me no confidence.

I don't even see how he can finish the book series in two volumes, at least not unless he drastically speeds up the pace of each novel, or he rapidly depletes his cast of characters.
Since the end of season 4 the show has felt like it is slowly converging to the end game as major characters start to die and houses begin to crumble or make allegiances which move the story along.
Meanwhile book 4 onwards it feels like Martin kept adding new characters and plot lines without worry.
